Chapter 12
(Introduction of the last secondary main character)
Holden (1) walked into the library with a pushcart of books in hand. It was his job, being the librarian. His jet black hair was grown to his families traditional shoulder length and tied into a ponytail. Frameless (I HAVE THESE!!! THEY COST A SHITLOAD OF MONEY!!! THAT’S WHY I GOT MY MOM TO BUY ME THEM FOR MY BIRTHDAY!!!) glasses covered his equally black eyes and pale face. His shirt was also black and longed sleeved, with his equally designless black pants he looked almost exactly opposite from his older brother, Greg.
Yes it was true the, two polar opposite people were in fact related, brothers even. But it wasn’t that Holden hated his “flamboyant” brother he just… hated him. Silently his black shoes carried him across the floor and to the nearest bookshelf, which he placed a book from the cart onto. He continued this process, shelf to shelf, until he came to a book on the floor.
The librarian grimaced in disgust. People throwing books around like they where trash, especially these books which where just plain old, the thought down right pissed him off.
“Who’s in here?” His quiet voice seemed to fit with the silence of the library, as if they where made for each other.
A small sob came from the other end of the room.
Curious Holden walked to where he heard the sob. Finding nothing he went back to his work, placing the book into the cart, thinking it was nothing.
Finally after all but a few of the books were replaced he moved his cart back to the place where the “imaginary” sob came from. Still curious he asked again, “Is there someone here?”
There was no response.
Now frustrated he got onto his knees and check under the table.
“Brian?”
He was on his side, curled up into a ball. His eyes only held a slight tint of red and puffiness; he had stopped crying a while a go, or hardly cried.
“Brian, you’re supposed to be in bed.” Concern now flooding his voice, “Come out, you’ll get sick and Tyreal will have my head if that happens.
At the vampire’s name Brian began shedding tears again.
“Wait, don’t you know? It wasn’t his fault; he had to drink frenzy wine.” Holden quickly crawled under the table and put his arms around Brian. “It wasn’t either of yours fault.”
Brian merely sobbed into the other’s arms. It took him a minute before he could say anything. “You don’t understand,” he whispered, “it’s not that, he’ll kill me if he found out.” and buried his face into Holden’s arms again.
Holden was even more confused then before, “What do you mean?” He pushed Brian’s chin up and forced the teen to look into his now dark green eyes, “What is it that I don’t know of?”
Looking into the elder eyes Brian soon calmed a little, hypnotized, “I’m in love.” his voice became monotone and the tears stopped.
“With whom?” Holden’s gazed intensified, seeing that Brian was unconsciously trying to break away.
“Him.”
“What’s his name?” He asked, he put even more power into the spell.
“I can’t tell you.”
“Why not?” Remaining calm even with the setback ‘Tyreal’s trained him well.’
“Everyone will get mad, you’ll hate me.” Brian slowly moved his arms against Holden’s chest, making weak attempts to break away.
“I won’t get mad, you can tell me.” Holden pressed further. It wasn’t that he was prying for no reason, something was wrong with Brian, and the person who he loved was hurting him somehow.
“Do you promise?” His sell was weakening, but Brian’s trust and thought was still being fogged.
“Yes.” The caster responded with barely a whisper.
“It’s Tyreal.”
Holden dropped Brian.
“You’re serious?”
Brian took a few moments to come completely to reality. Then his face paled in fear of what just happened. “Please don’t tell anyone, I didn’t mean to fall in love, I swear!”
Holden’s shook dissipated and he stared at the now babbling teen.
“… I won’t do anything about it…”
Suddenly Holden grabbed Brian, covering his mouth.
“Quiet, if you want to keep your life you’ll listen to what I have to say.” He looked into Brian’s eyes, his own turning a dark red.
Brian nodded and Holden moved his hand.
“You are never to tell anyone about this, never. You cannot sway into thought to constantly; you must pay attention people will get suspicious because it is out of character. Stay away from my brother; he’ll be able to sense it. And remember; never, ever speak of this again, not to me, not to Liz, not to a journal. You must never tell.”
Brian nodded.
“Come on we need to get you back to bed.” He said, pulling the boy up and heading to the door. .
“Is it true?” He asked causing the other to turn around, “What they say in the book is that what really happens if I… talk.”
Holden gave a sigh, “Yes, unfortunately so,” he walked the few paces back to Brian, “Vampire’s hate the thought of creating new vampires; they like to keep the crowd too vampiric born. If one where to fall in love with a mortal then that vampire would make there lover a vampire. That’s why mortals who declare their love are killed or worse.” He hugged him. “But you’ll be ok, even if Tyreal find out he won’t kill you, he’s always been strange. It will just be hard with the wedding and all.”
“Wedding?” “What wedding? Who’s getting married?” A small hint of excitement showed on his face.
“Tyreal.” Holden let out bluntly. Regretting answering when he felt Brian’s hands clutch his back.
“You’re kidding?” He asked placing his head into the crock of the slightly taller man.
“No, but it’s strictly political.” He added to give assurance, “He hates the girl, its that one who always comes around, Syreel.”
“Why?” His voice once again a whisper.
“I don’t know the details, but it has something to do with an alliance and the war.” Holden answered into his hair, “It’s going to be all right, it’s not like he loves her.”
“Why does it matter? It’s not like he’s ever going to want me.” He murmured hopelessly, “Maybe its better this way, he’ll be too occupied with his new wife.”
Holden pushed Brian’s head and looked into his eyes, but not casting a spell, “I said political, this woman holds no place in Tyreal’s heart; he doesn’t even like girls that much so stop forcing yourself into depression and go to bed.”
He gently pulled on his hands, leading him out of the library. Leaving the cart behind the librarian silently led the barefoot teen down the hall and into his own room.
The room itself was nothing special, just black. Nothing really wild, black carpet, black sheets, black wood (2), and everything other piece of furniture. No one really saw it strange once you got to know him, he just like the absence of color (3), no problem.
Holden led him to his bed and laid him down on it. After making sure he was comfortable he laid down next to him and wrapped his arms around his stomach. Brian made a small noise of protest before entering a deep slumber.
Holden smiled, it was his gift being a snake.
