ch 13
She awoke with a chill and opened her eyes. She sat up and looked around. He was gone. "Should have known." she muttered to herself.
Gaining her feet she looked outside and saw another few inches of snow had fallen during the night. Wrapping her cloak closer around her she decided to return to the inn. Slowly she picked her way through the snow, only the sound of her feet going through the layers making it eerie. She stopped, listened.
Nothing
Her breath warmed the air around her. A sudden tingle of awareness swept down her spine, turning quickly she came face to face a large Minotaur, a very large ax in his grip. The massive bovine with frozen mucus hanging from his nose, snorted. Little black eyes locked on to her as he swung the ax. She threw up a shield quickly; the ax blade bounced off, sparks flashed. The ugly beast let out a roar in frustration. She hadn’t time to brace herself and went flying backwards, landing on her butt in the snow. She gathered energy and hit the beast in the chest, knocking it back farther from her. She gained her feet quickly as it charged, letting out a rumbling snort. It swung again; she deflected. This time she hit it flames causing it to catch on fire briefly, it stumbled back swatting at the flames.
She turned, moved as quickly as she could through the deep snow some distance, when the tingle hit her again. She ducked, rolled, feeling the wind of another blade just miss her head. She let out a scream, rolling to her feet, as the first struck again, she leaped away. Looking back she saw the ax that had nearly missed her, buried deep into the snow that was meant to take her head. They both snorted again, letting out a curling roar and charged. She gathered herself calling on her powers. She squared her shoulders and kept them both in front of her. She attacked first, catching one on fire again and the other with enough force to send it back into the trees.
"Go away you ugly beasts. I\'ve no fight with you."
The one on fire rolled in the snow then came to his feet skin still smoking, let out a awful roar of its own, the other answered and they charged.
"Oh, hell."
She threw up a hard shield, they both hit it, causing it to wobble a bit but held. They both attacked hitting her shield again and again. She figured she would wait until they tired, but as one drew back to swing again she saw a mark burned into it upper arm and lost her concentration for a moment. That’s when the other struck. Its blade sliced through her shield and into her shoulder. She screamed again but this time in pain. Shock ran through her whole body. Clamping her hand over the wound, she turned and ran.
The large Viking was sitting on top of one of the buildings; he was watching and observing her skills. He knew the creatures she was facing; she should be able to outsmart them. He saw the beast strike her and her scream signaled that she needed help without hesitation the Viking jumped to the ground and raced her and the two Minotaur’s. He ran up from behind, grabbing hold of both blades, one in each hand, just as they were about to strike her down.
“Where are your manners?” he asked as the weapons were ripped from their hands.
She scrambled quickly out of the way, putting her back against a large tree. Her arm throbbed painfully, she gulped for air. Seeing the large Viking she slid around to the other side of the tree to move out of the way but also more out of sight. She kept an eye on the fight and another on her arm as she bandaged her wound.
Together they turned, snorted and charged him with horns lowered. He extended his hands so they would be strike them on top of their heads. The Viking let the change taking him, turning to a dull blown werewolf. His massive claw tipped hands made contact with their head, He and snow was pushed backwards. The snow piling up and his claws digging into the frozen ground until their charge were stopped. His muscles bunched and he pushed one of the Minotaur away causing it to roll away from him. Using his free hand he punched a hole through the thick skull of the other. He felt the bone break under his fist, squishing into the beast brain, he pulled it back out with a sickening sucking noise and the beast dropped to the ground. He pulled his large axe from his back and cleaved the other in half as it charged again with ease.
She blinked at the gore left behind, then at him. "I was handling that." lifting her chin a bit then winced at the pain shooting down her arm.
