--------

Matt came to pick me up everyday after school until the end of the year in June. In three months, our friendship blossomed, and made my friendship with Chris seem insignificant and small. I felt less lonely and didn't care that Chris had decided never to talk to me again.

Sometimes, I saw Chris staring daggers at me as he saw me run up to Matt and hug him, his hand always coming to rest gently on the same side of my face. We'd sometimes walk home, talking and looking at the scenery, stopping random places, and the smile he brought to my face was the most genuine smile I've worn in years.

Other times, he'd pick me up and we'd drive off somewhere for an after school snack. He'd even taken me to the movies a few times. I was hoping one day he would make a move and kiss me, but he never did. Our relationship was intense, yet subtle, intimate, yet friendly, and although I always hoped for more, I was content with what I did receive.

On the last day of school, he was waiting outside, as usual. It was unusually hot, and he was sweating slightly. It reminded me of so many movies where a pretty lady on a ranch rides past the ranch hands, sweating from working so hard, with their muscles glistening in the sun.

"Hey, Al," he said, getting into his side of the car while I walked around to mine. "How was school today?"

I sighed, "Boring as ever. But thank God, thank God! I never have to go back there again!"

"I know that feeling," he laughed. He turned the dial on the air conditioner of the car and sighed as the cool breeze began to circulate in the car. "That feels much, much better.

I simply nodded in agreement. Then Matt made a sharp U-turn, something that he had never done before.

"Matt?"

He mumbled in reply.

"Where are we going?" I asked, staring out the window of the car, watching a bunch of the kids from school celebrating their freedom.

"To my place."

My heart almost stopped. Back to his house? Maybe, maybe this would be the day he'd make his move.
