Chapter 13
Sean pulled up to Tyler’s Pet Shop, turning off his dark blue Mercedes. He stared at the brightly lit store, sighing because he couldn’t believe he was going to go into a fucking pet shop. But he would walk through animal hell for Orlando.
Opening his car door, he stepped out, scanning the area. From years of living on the edge, he could not risk letting his guard down even at a pet shop. Touching the gun, he felt the familiar weight against his side. He walked across the street, cool and cautious. As he entered the shop, he was greeted by different smells and sounds. Looking around, Sean saw erotic birds in large cages. Vibrant green foliage hung from the ceiling, making it look like a forest. As he weaved his way through the store, he saw snake, lizard, and fish tanks lining the walls.
There were parents screaming at their children, trying to get them under control. What little good that did. Several people moved out of Sean’s path as they noticed him walking their way. With Sean’s hard features, enormous size, and green piercing eyes made him a very intimidating person.
Sean scanned the store, trying to spot a sales clerk. If this wasn’t all for Orlando, he would tell Vin to do his own fucking errands, the fucking prick. Vin thought he had him on a short leash. “The fucker has another thing coming,” Sean said under his breath. Finally spotting a sales clerk near the puppy section, he made a beeline to him.
The clerk straightened as he saw a very intimidating man approach him. “C...can I help you, sir?”
“Yes, I’m here to pick-up Vin Diesel’s order.” Sean voice held a hint of anger.
Recognizing the name, Sully smiled. “Yes sir, wait here and I’ll get it for you.”
The young sales clerk headed toward the back of the store. He wanted to make sure Mr. Diesel was a happy client.
Sean stood there; his jaw clenched until it ached, waiting for the man to come back. The noises the puppies were making were causing his head to ache. Glancing down, five little puppies were running and jumping over each other. All but one was trying to gain the attention of the children. One puppy just sat there, his solemn brown eyes so much like Orlando’s looked up at him. Something tugged in Sean’s chest.
The clerk came back but not alone. He was carrying what looked like a large box and a second clerk carried a cage and supplies. “Here you go: Mr. Diesel’s order.”
Sean stared at the box, his green eyes glittering. Grabbing the box, he opened the lid. A brown and white fuzzy rat was sitting in the corner. “What the hell?” Sean snarled. “What in the hell is a boy supposed to do with a fucking rat?”
The clerk swallowed as Sean stared at the box in the man’s hand. “This is what Mr. Diesel ordered. He must have his reasons.”
“No doubt,” Sean said, glancing sideways. Mahogany eyes stared into his dark green eyes.
“Take the stuff out to my car,” Sean snarled.
Grabbing the box that contained the gerbil, Sully ushered his helper out the door. He turned back to big man. “Is there anything I can help you with?”
“Yeah, I want that puppy,” Sean said as he gestured to the one sitting with the other puppies and staring at him.
“Good choice, Mr….?” Sully paused, not getting the man’s name.
“Get me everything the puppy might need. It’s going to be a birthday gift. And be quick about it,” Sean said before he changed his mind.
Sean watched as the clerk hurried off to grab one object and another. Sean turned and squatted down so he was somewhat eye level with the puppy. Reaching down, he ran his hand over the puppy’s head.
The puppy leaned into Sean’s strong hand, whimpering softly. “I think you need Orlando as much as he needs you.”
The clerk came back, pushing a shopping cart full of puppy supplies. “Here’s everything the puppy might need,” he said, smiling and thinking of the bonus he was going to make.
“Everything should fit in the trunk of my car,” Sean said as he stood up.
Grabbing a doggy crate, the clerk bent down to grab the puppy by the back of his neck. Lifting him, he started to put him in the box but a soft whimper escaped him and Sean intervened.
“No need for the box, I’ll carry him,” Sean interrupted as he held out his hands.
“But to travel…” Sully’s words died in his throat as Sean’s glittering green eyes narrowed on him.
Handing the puppy over, Sully smiled uncertainly.
“Is there anything I need to know about the dog?” Sean asked as he brought the puppy up to face him.
“He’s had all of his shots but, like all dogs, he’ll need to be trained. It won’t be easy but with constant training and love he will be house broken in no time.”
“House broken?”
“You’ve never owned a dog before?”
“No.”
“Oh, well, let me get you a training video,” Sully suggested as he headed to the book section of the store.
Sean stared into the puppy’s big brown eyes. “We’re not going to have any trouble in that department are we, boy?”
Sully came back as Sean brought the puppy to his chest and held him. “Here’s the house breaking video to help you out,” Sully explained as he handed Sean the tape.
‘How in the hell did I get myself into this situation,’ Sean thought as he looked down at the bundle of fur on his arms. The puppy stared up; his _expression was of serious regard. “It had to be the eyes,” Sean muttered.
“Excuse me, sir? Did you say something?” Sully asked, hearing the muttering.
“It’s nothing.”
“How will you be paying, sir?”
Sean looked up and stared at the clerk. His sharp green eyes pierced Sully’s flat, black ones. Sully gulped, knowing he had insulted a very dangerous man. Damn, there went his bonus.
“Charge it to Mr. Diesel,” Sean spoke flatly. Orlando would love the puppy – Sean knew that for a fact – so the bastard was going to let Orlando keep it. Sean would see to that one way or another. The boy deserved a little happiness in his life and Sean vowed to himself that Orlando would get all the happiness he deserved.
