THIRTEEN
Eilla was standing in her kitchen entry, wrapped in a makeshift paper towel shirt, more embarassed than she had ever been. The regret hit like a stake to her heart, suddenly realizing what she had done. She stood staring through watery eyes at Theo, sitting on her couch holding the sunflowers Ben had brought her hours earlier. She didn't think to ask why he was in her house. She didn't think to ask how long he had been there. She didn't even think to ask why he had sat down and made himself comfortable, no doubt listening to the screaming and moaning Eilla had been doing.
"So, what's going on?" Theo asked, setting the flowers back in their vase. His face was blank, he wouldn't even look her in the eyes. He rubbed his forehead with both hands, as if to try and comprehend what he had walked in on.
Eilla took a deep breath and leaned against her countertop, unable to look at Theo. She forgot for a moment that Eazy was still in her room, that she was wearing paper towels as a shirt, and that for a moment she thought it was Ben sitting on that couch. All she thought of at that moment was she was so alone. She had betrayed Ben, used Eazy and shocked Theo. This was so unlike her. She wanted to cry but couldn't anymore.
"Eilla, get him the hell out of here," Theo said, suddenly appearing in front of her with his jacket held out for her to put on. He turned away quickly, letting her dress, and walked to the back of the kitchen where Eazy would not see him. Eilla nodded slowly and towards no one.
She walked slowly back to her bedroom, grabbing Eazy's shirt and jeans on the way. She entered her room, and saw her bathroom door open and Eazy exit in a towel. Eilla threw his clothes on the bed and slid off his shorts, trying to cover up in Theo's jacket. "You need to go now," she said plainly, opening her dresser and putting on a pair of her own shorts.
"Hey, what's..." Eazy began.
"Just get out of here," Eilla said louder, unable to look at him. She spun quickly to the door and opened it even before he was completely dressed. He let out a surprised 'hey' but she didn't care. He threw his clothes on and walked out of the room with a confused and insulted look and strut. When she heard her door open and shut, she changed into her own shirt and went to tell Theo to leave. She couldn't bare to discuss this situation at the moment.
"What is your problem?" Theo said before Eilla was even entirely in the room.
"Me? What the hell are you doing here? Why are you in my house?" Eilla asked, trying to be calm but failing. He voice was raised and she had no intention of lowering it.
"So, I talked to Ben," Theo began, ignoring the question. She was so upset at being caught red-handed, she ignored that he did not answer.
"How did you have time when all you do is text Casey?" Eilla asked.
"What? You mean earlier? That wasn't Casey," Theo got defensive. "That was Ben making sure you were ok because you wouldn't answer your phone. That was your goddamned boyfriend, who is distraught about upsetting you, who is thinking about turning down a dream job so he can stay here with your selfish ass so you can run the store. That was Ben, you know, the only guy you're supposed to be fucking right now! How long has this shit been going on?" Theo pointed accusingly at Eilla's room, trying to make her look at him. Her face was toward the floor, lips pressed together, trying to compose a sentence. She felt like a child again, knowing she disappointed the only people who care about her.
"Just tonight, that's it," she said in her new loud voice. It was startling to her and Theo both the tone she was using. She sat down in her recliner, realizing this converstation was not going to be short.
"How long have you been planning it, then?"
"What?" Eilla asked, confused.
"I can not believe you! I was here an hour ago and now I'm back and you're..."
"It was more than an hour ago," Eilla cut in.
"Is that really the point? Is it? I think its that you're cheating on the man you want to marry."
"It's complicated," Eilla said, which was the only defense she had. She knew there was no excuse.
"Are you going to tell Ben?" Theo said, more accusingly than questioning.
"What? No! Theo, please..." Eilla said, understanding that tone. If she wasn't going to tell Ben, Theo was.
"I'm just wondering what the fuck I'm going to say when he calls me any minute to ask how you are?" He sighed.
"I don't know. I don't even know what happened. I really have no idea. The entire night is a complete blur and I really don't need you to tell me I messed up," Eilla began to ramble. "And really, its none of your business so you can't tell Ben."
"The hell I can't!" Theo barked. His face began to turn red. "You are my best friend, Eilla, but this is bullshit. If you're not going to explain this to me, I am going to tell him. I will tell him tonight. Ben has been harping to me all night about how bad he feels and this is what you do. Eazy! I can't fucking believe this shit."
"I'm not avoiding the question, I just really don't remember. Its been a little stressful for me tonight."
"Why is this about you? You had a rough night so you fucked your ex boyfriend. And you clearly enjoyed it. Ben deserves better." Theo stood up and walked toward the door. "Get some sleep, I'm sure you're exhausted." The door slammed behind him and it startled Eilla who was still in curled in her chair staring at her fingers. She sat like that for what seemed like an eternity. Ben did deserve better. He had been nothing but perfect for her. She tried to think back of her mindset before Eazy had kissed her. It had been Eazy who started the physical contact, but Eilla had invited him over with the thought in the back of her mind that they would have sex. She didn't stop it. She probably would have done something eventually if Eazy hadn't been so anxious to kiss her. Eilla's heart was racing. Did she want to be with Eazy?
