Edward walked into the police station at a quarter to twelve. He hadn't told any of the others that he was leaving. They would try to stop him and he didn't want that. His whole body ached for the better part of the last hour. Randi's condition was getting worse. He had to get to her.
The station didn't have that many people in it because of the late hour. But there was a woman working on a computer that he recognized and when she looked up, she knew him as well.
"I'm here to see Detective Cain, please." Edward informed her. She stood up from her chair and looked at him.
"Do you know there is a warrant out for your arrest?" she asked carefully. Her right hand was ready to go for her gun in case he tried to do something.
"I figured there would be." he turned his back to her and crossed his wrists behind him. Aiden was a little surprised. This didn't happen that often. She walked to him and put the cuffs on his wrists. Edward turned around while she Mirandarized him. She took him by the arm and led him towards Lucas's office. She opened the door and took him inside.
Lucas immediately stood and walked over to him. "Finally been caught haven't you?"
"Actually, Detective, I walked in on my own." Edward told him. Lucas glanced at Aiden.
"Well, it's true. He just walked in."
"You're trying to help her aren't you?" Lucas asked.
"I don't want her to be in pain anymore. Let me help her and let her leave and I'll stay here and tell you anything that you want."
"I'll think about it." Lucas said coolly. A man rushed into the room past Aiden and Edward.
"Somethings happening... the girl... you have to come... she's bleeding... everywhere." he said terrified. Lucas had never seen him so scared before. Edward started for the door but Aiden pulled him back.
"Bring him." Lucas said as he left the room. What he was as he entered the holding area was a sight he would never forget.
Randi was lying on the floor in a fountain of her own blood. It covered the floor in a wave crimson silk. The entire floor in the cell was drenched in it. Randi had blood pouring out of her eyes, ears, nose and mouth in a never ending stream. Her skin was a pure white color exposing the drying veins beneath it. Blood was seeping out from under her fingernails.
"My God," Aiden whispered.
When Edward entered the room the smell of so much blood slapped him across the face. He could taste it on the back of his tongue. His eyes shifted to a bright blue color and he could feel his fangs grow in his mouth. It took all his will not to break the handcuffs and lunge at the cell door. He even had to make himself stop breathing. Aiden stared up at Edward without speaking. Her mouth hung open in surprise. His appearance had changed so much that at first she thought she was hallucinating.
"Let me go to her." Edward whispered to Aiden. In front of them Lucas was beyond trying to get the cell door open. Something was keeping it shut. All Aiden could do was shake her head. "Please, I won't hurt her or run." Aiden hesitated but then unlocked the handcuffs. Edward made it within two feet of the cell when Lucas turned around. He instantly raised his gun.
"Don't move."
"We already know that this won't work." Edward said. Lucas stared at Edward in his new form, confused, but unyielding.
"Put the gun down, Lucas." Aiden ordered, her own gun pointing at her partner.
"What are you doing?" Lucas asked angrily.
"I think he can help her." Aiden replied. Lucas made a sound that was angry attempt at a laugh.
"You're not serious?"
"Enough!" Edward yelled. Everyone stopped moving and stared at him. Then he was gone. The door of the cell was hanging by one hinge. Edward knelt down carefully in the river of Randi's blood. As gently as he could he lifted her and placed as much of her body in his lap as he could. He placed two fingers at her throat and couldn't feel a pulse. She couldn't die. Not like this. Not ever.
Edward's blue eyes began glow brightly. The glow reflected off the blood and danced over it, leaving tiny beads of purple in its wake. Every person outside the cell had their guns trained on Edward but their eyes remained on Edward's, watching him with unspeakable awe.
"Miranda," Edward whispered. "Give me something, anything to let me know you're in there." he had thought, hoped that touching her, being in her presence would help her to come back.
"Edward," Aiden said softly lowering her gun. He pulled his eyes away from Randi and looked to Aiden. The sight of his eyes full on was a little startling. "Kiss her." she told him. The statement was so bizzare and unexpected that Edward was taken aback and was so shocked that all he could do was look at her. Even Lucas glanced over at Aiden. What kind of solution was that? "She doesn't just need your touch, she needs a vampires kiss. Her vampires kiss." Lucas turned his whole head to gape at Aiden. Edward looked so confused as he went to look back at Randi.
He raised her up in his arms and pressed his lips to hers. The taste that was seeping out of her mouth was so sweet. It had been so many years since he had tasted human blood. He forced himself to only kiss her and not drink her.
Edward's eyes were closed by the glow of them shone through the translucent skin. It made tiny patters on her skin, as though a sapphire was reflecting on her.
Small prickling sensations started to creep onto Edward's lips. It caught him by surprise and the remaining air in his lungs was expelled out. His breath traced along Randi's lips. There was a painful shock as it happened and Edward jerked his face back. The glow of his eyes died to a light shimmer. He was staring at her hard, looking for any movement at all. What he got wasn't a movement.
It was the faintest heart beat that Edward had head, but it was there. If only he could get her to breathe. Could he? Would his own breath be enough? He lay her on the floor and tilted her head back. He started to blow puffs of air into her lungs. Her chest rose and fell but he didn't know how effective it was. He pulled away and looked at her.
"Please, come back from the dark." he whispered. Edward was just about to lose it, almost on the verge of going on a rampage. Aiden walked into the cell and crouched beside him.
"I'm sorry, Edward." She put a hand on his shoulder.
"She's not breathing. But her hearts beating." Tears were beginning to form in his eyes. Lucas lowered his gun as did the rest. None of them had ever seen such compassion. They were used to death and brutality. This was just heart breaking.
"Why won't she breathe?" before Aiden could answer, Edward cried out in pain. The guns went back up on instinct. His hands convulsed around Randi, his fingers digging into her skin. The pain in Edwards chest was excruciating, as if a thousand knives were stabbing him. Randi gasped in his arms and shot up. Aiden jerked backwards and landed in the blood. Edward's eyes were huge and glowing again.
"Randi," he choked out. He fell back on the floor, his hand over his heart. The only thing he could hear was the sound of a heart. His heart was beating. It was impossible. His heart couldn't beat, he was dead. Dead for hundreds of years. Aiden came back to her knees and took Randi by the shoulders. Randi let out a high pitched scream. Aiden took her hands away and Randi stopped screaming. She turned her head to Edward, who had stopped moving. Randi's body was covered by her blood. Her face, clothes, everything. No one could understand how she was moving. She looked like she had lost more blood than was in the human body.
Randi wiped her fingers across Edward's lips in a daze. Blood glistened across them. She turned towards Aiden, who didn't know what to make of it all, and fell forward. Her head landed on Edward's chest. The last thing she heard before she was lost to the darkness was the thump of Edward's heart beat.
"Get a medic." Aiden said. Lucas and the rest of the officers couldn't move. All of them were lost in what they had just witnessed.
