Chapter 13
People milled around to and fro, talking, cheering; all a part of the grand celebration of Westlaw’s championship win. From the corner of Warren’s eye, he could make out JD’s cheerleader form drenched in cheerleaders and pretty girls on every available inch.
“Hey dude!” JD waved him over. “You gotta get one of these chicks…they’re all so ready to help us celebrate, some are very enthusiastic and,” He smiled cockily at one blonde and one redhead in particular. “Some are full of school spirit.” He gestured with a wink and a leer. The girls didn’t seem to mind as they giggled and bounced up and down drunkenly.
Warren laughed. The display was corny and sickening , yet he found it easier to just laugh instead of retch. Only two more hours and it would be just him and Jace. Just them and maybe more.

He’d changed his shirt four times and was in the process of yet another change when a voice filled his ear. “You know for someone who could give a two shits about,” Sarah air-quoted. “ those pompous ‘windbags’ at Westlaw, you are spending a lot of time getting pretty to be in their presence.”
Jace pulled the shirt over his head, before turning to Sarah. “Yeah, well, I figured it’s more than time for me to start showing them what real taste is…” He looked her over. The jeans she wore clung to all the right places, extenuating her fantastically long and sculpted legs. Her top bared a nice stretch of midriff. Gay or straight, she was an enviable sight.
“You look hot.” Jace walked around her. “Go you, Ebony Goddess.” Sarah hit on the shoulder teasingly. She cocked a long arched perfect brow, her smirk showed all her sparkling teeth. “Don’t be jealous, because you want some.” The purr in her voice turned him on just a bit.
They teased each other like this all the time. “Come on, we can’t keep the people waiting.” Their friendship had grown steadily and quietly. It started with questions about photography in after school, then it had become quiet exchanges of tears and smiles. Warren wasn’t the only one dealing with confusion or love.
They were in Sarah’s car driving to the championship party. “You think he’ll be okay with it?” It was hard to hear that scared voice coming from vibrant pillar of strength that Jace knew Sarah to be.
Jace smiled. She didn’t know the half of it. “Yeah.”
“You sure?” She asked. Jace knew tonight would be big for him, for Warren, and for Sarah too.
A crossroads. They were all seeking to be the people they wanted to be.Life, freedom, and happinees, it was all theirs to be had.
“I think Warren might surprise you.”
The house was full of people. All students at Westlaw or college students from the town.
Jace stopped suddenly with Sarah walking into his back. Warren stood across the room, looking lost, more like a big kid amongst a see of grownups instead of the town savior.
He must have caught sight of them by the formation of the bright grin that spread across his face. “Hey!” He stopped short. “You guys look nice!”
The pair smiled. Every once in a while, one was jostled by the dancing partygoers. Warren gazed at Jace. His hands itched touch the other boy so badly. But the time was not now. Sarah kept the smile on her face and looked around. The moment was drawing out and becoming akward, moreso by her wanting to speak with Warren so badly.
Finally, she walked to his side, and whispered in his ear. “Can I talk to you?” She asked.
Warren nodded. Sarah walked outside and waited for him to finish with Jace. They walked into the backyard, passing a few cheering and highly intoxicated students.
They walked across the yard in silence. They finally came to a stop beneath the gazebo. “So what do you want to talk about?” Warren faced her, face open and expectant.
She took a breath, figuring it was now or never. “I’m a lesbian.”
He what to say ‘what’. Instead, the disconnect between his brain and his mouth finally worked in his favor. “Really?”
In the dim light of the patio’s light, he could still see the glistening of a wall of tears in her eyes. She crossed her arms over her chest defensively, suddenly becoming pissed off. “Yes! Is ‘really’ all you can say?” She began to yell.
Warren rubbed the back of his neck. He looked around cautiously for any errant partygoers. Finding none, he turned back to look at Sarah. “Well…I don’t know do you want me to say congrats or something? ‘Cause, I’m feeling like I wouldn’t want you to say that to me if I told you I like guys.”
She rolled her eyes in exaggeration. “As if you would ever say something like that--” Sarah stopped and looked at him. “Are you trying to tell me something?” She approached him. Her big brown eyes gazed unwaveringly into his grey set.
He shrugged. This conversation wasn’t supposed to be about him. It felt like a golden moment. Like something especially allotted to him for the purpose of deciding the fate of his life. Was he going to live in fear or would be stand up and be the man that he so desired to be? “Sarah,” He took a breath. “I like boys.”
Stepping backwards, Sarah navigated her way back to the bench. She sank down heavily and remained silent. Warren watched her, his pulse racing, his mind wondering if he had made a mistake? “Sarah, please--” He began.
“All this time, I was worried you would give me shit. You know kinda like my mom…”
“You know I would never give you shit.”
“I know, but it was so hard. Shit.” She sighed. Her head rested against her slumped fist. Her glances at him came and went. When he felt like he couldn’t tolerate the quiet anymore, the laughter began. “If I had known, I would have come to you first, but, shit…Warren, we’re quite a pair huh? I long have you known?”
“Forever, I guess. It wasn’t until recently that I decided to go something about it.”
The feeling from earlier was back. “It was Jace, wasn’t it?”
“Yeah.” It finally felt good to say it aloud.
