This Changes Things

Chapter 13 – This Changes Things

Bliss lay in bed that night ignoring the ringing of her cell phone and the inevitable beep that meant she had another voice mail. Davea wanted to know how it went. Daniel wanted to know where she was. Waza wanted to know if she was going to out with them sometime, whenever, so they could get doped up and have all of their mind clouded and judgment stolen. Bliss did not want to talk to any of them. Tonight had been a blow to her whole world.

James Grant was a distinguished actor who had all of the good roles. If it had not been for his busy schedule he would have been the one in DaVinci Code instead of Tom Hanks. It was unfair for him to have a wife who did not portray any of the things he stood for, and a wife who not only cheated on him, but cheated on him with her brother. A brother who had become her father.

Bliss had been mostly silent on the way home but when she and Shai had entered the house she had been unable to control the bubble of anger that burped out of her. “Why didn’t you tell me?” she accused, though her anger was not really focused at Shai, or Kyoei, she just could not help herself. She wanted someone to feel the pain she was going through and she started throwing a tantrum like a child. Shai and Kyoei had taken it, Kyoei coming downstairs moments after they had returned to stand by his wife. They both had listened, and answered when Bliss had given a break in her rantings, and Bliss had been the one to finally send herself to her room.

It was late in the night when Bliss’s door opened and the creak of her floor could be heard. She was wide awake and was not really surprised that he was sneaking in to see her, she actually wondered what had taken him so long. She was just glad that the rest of the siblings had stayed out of the way as she had yelled at their parents, her parents.

The bed sank under the weight of her ‘brother’ and he curled up close to her. She turned towards him and curled up in his arms, just liking the feel of the warmth. “It would be nicer if Mom and Dad were my real Mom and Dad,” she said quietly into the darkness.

“They are,” Shu admitted to her. “Just because Mom didn’t give birth to you she has put more care into raising you than any of the rest of us. She has always wanted you to be happy.”

“Look how I repay her,” Bliss sniffed. “I do drugs, I kiss my brother, and I lie. I even yelled at her, she didn’t deserve that.”
“No, she didn’t,” Shu admitted, “but it is what children do best.”

Bliss sighed and rolled over onto her side. “Shu… I think I need to be alone right now,” she admitted.

Shu nodded, but not without giving her one last hug. “I know this is hard for you right now, but remember you have a whole family that stands behind you.”

“Thanks, Shu,” Bliss said, feeling his weight leave the bed as he slowly snuck out of the room. When he was gone she let out a shudder and was slightly thankful he was gone. He was her brother, and though it was not by blood, the thought of the things her Mom had become soured her stomach. She was in love with Shu, but now… now she felt like she was just going to follow in that woman’s footsteps and if that was the direction her life was going to take… No, her direction would be different. She would find a new direction in life, and it would not include being in love with her brother.
