“Come on Nick lets go.” Nedia said as she put Nick in the back seat of her small car. She was really late. It was already 9:00 a.m. and she knew there was going to be a lot of work today

“Okay mommy,” Nick answered.

Nedia didn’t wake up early because she had a very bad night. She spent hours tossing and turning, thinking about Noah’s reaction when she told him about Jessy’s phone call. It seemed as if he was surprised. “But didn’t he ask her to call me?? Of course he did. That explained why he didn’t call me himself after our date.” She spent the whole night talking to herself like that, asking questions without knowing the answers. Finally she fell asleep at around 5:00 am.

Less than four hours later she opened her eyes and struggled to read the clock beside her bed. Slowly the numbers on the clock came into focus – 8:45. “No, no, no, I can’t be late,” she groaned. She got up quickly, woke Nick up, and 15 minutes later she was driving her car, heading straight to her work.

Nedia parked her car. She carried Nick and ran to the day-care as fast as she could.

“Kate!!” she called out.

“Hey Nedia I thought you weren’t going to come.” Kate said as she picked Sally up and walked to where Nedia was standing trying to fix her clothes as she checked Nick into the day-care.

“What’s wrong?? You look strange.” She said, pointing at Nedia’s brown skirt and black jacket. “Did you get dressed in the dark or what?” she asked trying not to laugh.

“What?” Nedia asked, then looked down at her skirt, “Oh, I thought it was black!!”

“Black? It’s brown Nedia”

“You know what, I don’t care if I’m wearing the wrong color. I was so late this morning, I didn’t notice.” Nedia spoke quickly, impatient to leave.

“Okay. Come here Nicky, I have a surprise for you.” Kate took Nick’s hand and started walking to where all the kids were playing. She stopped in the middle and turned to look at Nedia “By the way, I love your hair cut!!”

“Yeah?? I forgot all about that.” She took a deep breath, then continued, “Well after what happened 3 days ago, I forgot everything else. Thanks anyway. I better go now Kate. See you at lunch.”

Nedia entered her office 10 minutes later. The moment she sat down, her boss called. She spent the next 2 hours in his office. The first half hour he gave her a lecture about being late and how she was too good to destroy her career by being late and stuff like that. “I ‘m so not in the mood for this.” She thought while he was continuing his rant.
She spent the rest of the two hours taking notes from him.

As for the rest of the day Nedia was really busy that she didn’t even go to lunch with Kate; instead she stayed in her office and continued what she was doing. Working as a design is very hard and it needs a lot of concentration.

Nedia was reaching for the last paper in the file she was working on when the phone rang.

“Nedia Adams.”

“Hey honey, how are you?”

“Hi Mom, I’m fine. Look, can you call me later, I‘m so sorry but I’m really busy today.” She said trying to concentrate on her work while talking.

“It’s okay Nedia. I just called to ask you about Noah Mathew. He is such a great guy. I’m so happy you finally went out with someone.” Her mom said quickly “but that’s okay we’ll talk later.”

“No, no wait!” Nedia screamed. “Who said I’m going out with Noah??” she asked carefully.

“He did,” her mom said simply, as if it wasn’t a strange thing.

“He what?? When did that happen?” Her voice rising with each question. “Did he call you? Oh Mom, did you tell him anything about Nick? Did you …”

“No” Lisa interrupted, “He didn’t call me. Calm down Nedia. He visited your father and I yesterday, and I thought you two were going out together, at least he said so. And we didn’t talk about Nick a lot; Noah only asked me a few questions about him.”

Nedia’s face turned white and she stammered, “W-what questions??”

“Nedia, what’s wrong with you? I told him what I usually tell anybody. I said Nick is a beautiful and wonderful three year old kid and…..”

“No,” Nedia whispered as she heard what her mother said. “No,” she repeated, louder this time. “Why mom? Why did you do that?”

“Nedia., what’s the matter? I mean Noah is a good guy, why are you making it such a bi….. wait a second…” There was silence for a moment then Lisa spoke slowly, “…Oh Nedia. Is he Nick’s……?”

“Yes Mom.” She said, finally telling her mother something she swore never to tell anyone.

“Honey. I’m sorry. I didn’t know, you never said anything.” She stopped again. “Nedia. You didn’t tell Noah about Nick?” Her mom asked in horror.

“No Mom I didn’t” she answered in a low voice, knowing exactly what was coming next.

“Nedia Adams are you out of your mind?” her mom shouted. “He is Nick’s father. How can you do this to him? How can you do this to Nick?”

“Mom, I don’t think it’s a big deal. Nick and I are getting by just fine,” she said. “Tell me, Mom, what happened after you talked about Nick?” She was afraid to even ask.

“Nothing, we talked about you for a while. Then he said he had to leave, and that he would come visit me again soon.”

“You talked about me? Mom what did you talk about? I just don’t understand what he wanted from you?”

“Nedia, I have to go now. Your father is searching for something and he can’t find it, so I have to go help. We’ll talk later honey, bye”

“Wait Mo...” but Lisa hung up. “Oh what now?? I can’t take this anymore.” She said out loud.

She looked again at the memo in front of her. “I can’t do this.” Nedia got up, grabbed her bag and walked to the elevator.

She got out of the elevator and walked directly to the day-care which was on the 3rd floor. Nedia stood there staring at Nick, who was playing with Sally and three other kids. She felt as if her life was falling apart.

“Nedia,” Kate put a hand on her shoulder.

“Yes” she said not taking her eyes off her son.

“Come on, lets go somewhere quiet, I’m sure something else happened.” Kate said kindly. They entered Kate’s office and Nedia sat on the nearest chair.

“He visited Mom yesterday.” Nedia said looking up at the ceiling.

“Noah visited your mom??” Kate asked “Come on, tell me what happened Nedia.”

Nedia got home an hour later. She got out of the car and opened the back seat’s door to get Nick out, but she found him sleeping peacefully in his car seat.

She stood there looking at him sleeping, “Oh Nick, what do you think I should do?”

Nedia carried Nick inside the house. She put him in bed and turned to leave quietly. She was in her bedroom taking off her clothes when she heard knocking on the door. She quickly put her clothes back on and headed to the door.

“Yes. I’m coming.” She said in a loud voice.

“Who could that be?” she wondered as she stood in front of the door.

Through the peep-hole, Nedia could see a figure standing at the door. It was a female figure. It must be Kate, she thought.

“Kate, I didn’t know you were co…..” she froze when she saw who was standing there.

“Hi Nedia. I’m sorry for coming suddenly like that but… can I talk to you?”

Nedia stood there wondering if it’s possible to hate someone as much as she hated this woman.

“Ah-… I know you probably hate me. But please, I need to tell you something. It’s extremely important Nedia.” Jessy said.

Nedia stepped back to let her in.

“Come in Jessy.” She said wondering what brought her here.

“Thanks.” Jessy answered smiling as she stepped inside the house.

Nedia noticed something; Jessy looked strange, she looked sort of sad, not the old happy blond cheerleader. Of course she’s sad, because of the divorce, Nedia thought. Nedia knew Jessy loved Noah but she never thought Jessy would look so sad because of anyone.

“Please sit down.” Nedia motioned for Jessy to sit on the couch. Nedia sat across the coffee table from her, on the edge of a chair.

“Look Nedia, I know you must hate me.” Jessy laughed harshly “Well, I deserve it, believe me. Anyway, there’s something I need to tell you.” Jessy paused, looking down at the floor.

“I…...I tricked Noah into marrying me.”

“What??” Nedia exclaimed.

“I tricked him, I lied to him! I said I was pregnant because I wanted him to marry me. I even said I would take the child away.” Jessy looked up at Nedia with tears in her eyes.

Tears?? That’s really strange. Nedia thought.

“Jessy, I know the divorce was hard for you and I know you really love Noah. But what I don’t know is why you are telling me this now?”

“Nedia please, you are making it hard for me…..” She stopped for a second then said clearly, “Everything I told you that day on the phone was a lie. I lied to you, I lied to Noah, and I lied to everyone.” Jessy’s shoulders drooped as she stared at the floor again.

Nedia sat there looking at Jessy. She’d never seen her that weak before. “I’m sorry Jessy, but why are you doing all of this? I mean you have never been good to me, you yourself said you lied to me. Why are you telling me the truth now?” Nedia couldn’t believe what she was hearing.

“Because I should have left you both alone four years ago. I should have believed Noah when he told me that he loved you, and you loved him too. He even told me I’d find someone someday; someone I’d fall in love with. You know what? I did find someone but….” Jessy wasn’t able to hold the tears anymore. She buried her face in her hands and sobbed. Nedia nudged a box of Kleenex on the coffee table toward Jessy.

Ignoring the tissues, Jessy continued, “I’ll tell you what happened. Three months after the divorce, I met Sam. I didn’t know anything about him, I just fell in love him the moment I set eyes on him. Only then, I realized I never loved Noah, at least not the way I loved Sam. We went out everyday for a whole month. It was like heaven to me. But then he left suddenly, and a week later I found out that he was married. He and his wife... they had a fight and they got back together after he left me.” Jessy got up; she wiped her eyes with the back of her hands like a little child.

“Nedia, the reason I’m telling you this is that I now know how it feels to love someone and….I know Noah loved you so much, and he still does. He really loves you Nedia.” She walked to the door then stopped. She turned to look at Nedia again.

“I’m sorry I destroyed your life, I’m sorry I destroyed Noah’s life, and I’m sorry I broke his heart when I made him choose between you and his child. I really am sorry.” She ran out of the room quickly and a second later Nedia heard the door slam.

Nedia looked around the empty room. She remembered Noah’s reaction when she told him about Jessy’s phone call. He really didn’t know anything about that phone call. “Oh, I shouldn’t have left. I should have called him, I should have gone there and talked to him. But I took the easy way out. I left; I walked out on him when he needed me.”

Nedia heard a sound coming from Nick’s room. She got up and ran to him to find him crying in his bed. “Honey what is it?” she picked him up and hugged him close.

“Its okay, I’m here, its okay honey, shhhh.” Nick stopped crying and looked at her with his dark blue eyes. They were exactly like Noah’s.

Noah!! She imagined him sitting alone in his room four years ago trying to choose between her and his child.

“We have to go see daddy Nick. I have to talk to him.”
