Falling For You

Chapter 13

A Little Illumination

oOoOoOoOo

“What lies lurk in kisses…”

--Heinrich Heine

oOoOoOoOo

Using her sudsy toes to twist the handle of the faucet off, Breanna sighed contentedly and leaned back into Devon’s embrace. Resting her head on his shoulder, she glanced up at his half opened eyes and serene expression with a small smile. Reclining back against the cool ceramic of the tub with one arm dangling off the side and the other cradling her close to his chest, he looked as if he were about to fall asleep at any second.

The soft glow from the candles scattered about suffused the steamy room with their sweet-smelling scent as they flickered and smoldered around them. In the hazy light, Devon’s usually striking features were shadowed and muted. The low key lighting lent his appearance a mysterious edge that fit so well with the unapproachable air he held about himself to discourage people like herself from asking questions he’d rather not answer.

‘God, he’s pretty…’ she mused to herself whimsically as she pressed light, feathery kisses along the damp skin within reach of her mouth. Stirring to life behind her, Devon yawned sleepily and trailed a lazy hand over her soapy belly.

“What are you up to, trouble maker,” he murmured with an amused smile as Breanna blinked up at him innocently and tweaked the tip of his nose.

“Trouble maker, ha!” she scoffed with a chuckle, “The only trouble maker here is you, mister.”

“I don’t believe I am the one who initiated a game of erotic hide and seek, now am I?” Devon reminded her as he ran his hands up and down the slick skin of her upper thighs.

“I don’t seem to remember any complaints coming from your end,” Breanna commented dryly.

Devon snickered. “That’s beside the point.”

Finding it hard to focus when his hands were so close to the part of her that ached and burned for his touch, Breanna threaded her fingers through his and brought them to her mouth. Nipping the end of his pointer finger and then soothing the bite with a sweet, open mouthed kiss, Breanna closed her eyes and tried to figure out the best way to approach the subject that had been nagging her mercilessly since last night at the park.

Sensing her uneasiness in the way her spine stiffened and shoulders visibly tightened, Devon cupped her chin and turned her face toward his. “Whatcha thinking about?” he asked her warily.

Averting her eyes, Breanna shrugged. “Nothing much.”

“Bullshit.”

‘Just for once I wish I could lie to him,’ Breanna scowled as Devon continued to stare at her, obviously waiting for an answer.

“I was just… uh… well…” Taking a deep breath, Breanna blurted out her question in a rush before she could talk herself out of it. “Whathappenedtoyourmom?”

His hand fell away from her face slowly, and Breanna could almost swear she felt him emotionally distance himself from her, his body still and stiff against her back. Panicked, Breanna hid her face in his neck and babbled nervously to fill the awkward, tense silence that had immediately followed her impetuous inquiry. “I’m sorry, I know it’s none of my business, but you can’t blame me for being curious! It’s weird how they’re never home, and how you never talk about them. Are they on a business trip or something? Are they divorced?”

Glancing up at his stoic expression, Breanna inwardly groaned and buried her head beneath his chin. “Never mind. I’m sorry… I shouldn’t have asked. Please… just forget I ever said anything, ok?”

Placing a trembling hand over his steadily beating heart, Breanna fell silent and prayed to God that she hadn’t just ruined everything with a question she knew she shouldn’t have asked. He was quiet for so long, that when he did finally break the oppressive silence, Breanna had to contain the urge to jump at the sound of his voice.

“She died. They both did… A long time ago. I don’t really like talking about it,” he mumbled softly.

With a little gasp, Breanna straightened up, twisted around, and cradled his head in her palms. “Oh, God… I’m so sorry, Devon. I’m so sorry…”

With a pained look, Devon turned his face away and stared unseeingly at the candles lining the counter top. “Don’t… Please, don’t do that, ok? I’m fine by myself. I don’t need anybody to take care of me.”

“But… how can you afford to live in this place?”

Devon shrugged dismissively and swirled the tepid, bubbly water listlessly, purposely avoiding Breanna’s puzzled eyes. “I have a very sympathetic family,” he muttered evasively.

Shocked, Breanna curled her legs up to her chest and turned herself sideways so she could face him more comfortably. “I… don’t know what to say.”

Devon snorted incredulously. “That’s a first.”

Breanna was too stunned to even register the subtle insult, her mind desperately attempting to process the new information she had forced Devon into telling her. Sighing deeply, he clasped her shoulders and gave her a gentle shake.

“Listen, the last thing I want from you is your pity. I’ve been getting that my whole damn life. Just forget about it, alright?” Tugging gently on a curl that had fallen loose from her messy bun, Devon captured her mouth in a kiss meant to distract and dissuade.

Breanna moaned as he tilted her head the side, at the way he delved his tongue into her mouth. It felt as though he was trying to consume her from the inside, and though she knew he’d only initiated the kiss to side track her, Breanna didn’t care.

Passionate, fervent, and for reasons unknown, almost desperate, he was voracious, and Breanna met his hunger head on. Teasing his tongue with her own, tangling her fingers in his disheveled auburn locks, she wrapped her arms around him and pulled herself up flush against him.

Eager hands danced over the bare skin of her back as Breanna shivered and sighed against his lips. She could feel how excited he was, and took pleasure in knowing that she was the reason for his current state. It was exhilarating to know that out of all the girls he could have had, he had chosen her. Had trusted her enough to tell her something that obviously hurt him deeply. Breanna knew she should probably be mad at him for manipulating her into the situation she now found herself in, but for the life of her, could not muster up the strength to push him away.

She was in too deep.

They both were.

It was only a matter of time before reality came crashing back down upon them to shatter the fantasy they had draped around themselves like a silken sheet. Knowing this, however, only drove her to desire more time. To savor each moment she spent away from prying eyes and tedious responsibilities. She wondered if he felt the same way, and after a moment, concluded that it was irrelevant. He had made his intentions toward this affair crystal clear, and she was not going to be the one to wish for something more. Why should she?

Digging her finger nails into his shoulders as he rubbed up against her suggestively, Breanna sucked in her breath and relished the feel of his hot, hard body throbbing beneath her.

This…

This was enough…

This was all she wanted…

Wasn’t it…?

oOoOoOoOoOo

Much later on, the sated couple lay languorously together, wrapped in the burgundy sheets of Devon’s queen sized bed as they reflected on their whirlwind weekend. The candles were again present. They shrouded the room in an atmosphere similar to that of the bathroom earlier, preserving the intimate mood, and chasing away the all too reasonable thoughts infringing upon their precious time together.

But, the truth cannot be ignored forever, and Breanna knew that she had to touch on the subject of school tomorrow morning. Running a finger down the bridge of his nose and giving the tip a tap, she sighed and smiled.

“How are we going to do this, Devon? We can’t get caught.”

Devon nodded in agreement. “No, we can’t. Don’t worry about it, I have plenty of experience in these kind of matters.”

Breanna resisted the urge to flinch. ‘Oh c’mon Bre, you know he’s done this kind of thing before,’ she berated herself as she smiled weakly in response. She refused to scour her mind endlessly for the reason why a reminder of his playboy history would produce the kind of reaction akin to a jealous girlfriend.

“Ok. I trust you.”

Pulling her close, Devon enveloped her in the soothing, all too familiar embrace that she had fallen asleep in the last two nights.

‘And you do, don’t you?’

‘I do what?’

‘Trust him.’

Nestling herself into his arms and letting her eyes fall shut, Breanna ignored that question and instead savored how good it felt to just be held. As she drifted on the edge between wakefulness and the place where dreams dwelled, Breanna found herself thinking back on how flippantly he had delivered the news of his parent’s death to her.

‘He’s so strange. Sometimes it seems like he’s right there beside me, but at the same time a million miles away. He’s so cut off from everyone. No friends, no immediate family… Only a plethora of pretty faces to remember him in a world he seems so determined to hide himself away from.’

‘Are you planning to save him, Breanna?’

She frowned thoughtfully. ‘I don’t think he would like that very much, do you?’

‘Probably not.’

Opening her eyes, lulled by the sensation Devon’s warm, even breathing on the skin her neck, Breanna focused on a candle burning on the nightstand beside the bed. ‘He reminds me of the flame of that candle. Hot, dangerous, mesmerizing… and gone all too quickly. I wonder how long he’ll stay before he decides it’s time to move on. Will he forget me? Will he forget us?’

‘Why does it matter?’

‘It doesn’t really, does it? In the end, memories will be all that we have to remind us of the time we spend together…’

Deciding that these kind of disconcerting thoughts were sure to give her nightmares, Breanna closed her eyes once more and settled back into Devon’s arms.

‘Tomorrow… I’ll worry about it tomorrow…’
