Thirteen
I felt a keen sense of disappointment when the song ended. I wanted to dance with Lysande a bit more, but I was also looking forward to the events still to come that night.
Ladislao walked up on silent feet and startled both of us when he spoke, “Watching you two dance has been quite….motivating.” His eyes were twin flames of ice. “I will be sure to pair you together again soon….”
In one voice we answered, “If that is your wish.” We looked at each other, stunned that our thoughts were mirrored. Ladislao threw back his head and laughed…his deep baritone echoing in the ballroom and caressing all within. I found myself blushing and looking down at my slippered toes. I felt his hand beneath my chin lifting it so my eyes would meet his.
I saw the desire and wanting in his eyes, barely contained, barely controlled, reaching out its icy inferno and burying itself within my soul. The last exchange was soon at hand; I could hardly wait. My anticipation was tearing my composure to shreds with each second that passed.
As if by magic, our guests disappeared, by twos and threes, leaving no trace that they had been there at all, except for Lysande. Her perfume seemed to linger long after she had made her departure; spiced vanilla, warm and exotic.
We made our way up the grand stairs, Ladislao and I, and the seemingly endless journey down the hall to our suite. I was breathless, exhilarated. I felt that I would have flown right out of my skin if Ladislao hadn’t been holding my arm. He sensed this and chuckled quietly, “You may fly away just yet. I think I may have to tie you down so you don’t fly away too soon.” And with that, he opened the door.
