December 15, 1998
A loud bang woke me up, I quickly sat up from the couch as I looked around the dark room. I was about to get up when the room was flooded with light.
Lucas was standing next to the light switch as he looked at me, then bang the bang was heard again as my eyebrows raised. He and I looked at the front door.
“Ellie,” Lucas whispered as he raised his hand pointed at me, “stay,” Lucas slowly walked to the front door and peeked through the peephole.
The banging on the door became more persistent and then I heard it, “Ellie get the fuck out here!”
“is that Justin?” I whispered back to Lucas. He nodded as he walked back to the couch and sat next to me.
“He looks and sounds drunk,” Lucas patted me on the leg as the banging became more persistent.
“It didn't end amicably between the both of you did it.” Lucas raised an eyebrow at me as I nodded.
“Yeah well we argued and he got a little physical and-”
“Physical?” Lucas asked as he stopped patting my leg and tensed up.
“He sort of pushed me into a wall,” Lucas gritted his teeth, the noise sent a shiver down my spine as he stood up.
“no no no,” I grabbed his arm and hugged him. “don't please, besides that was all he did. A friend in the dorms manage to stop him before it escalated and she ended up breaking his nose.” Lucas stopped as he shrugged me off and kept walking to the door.
“Lucas,” I pleaded as I just stood there, once he made his mind up it was pointless for me to try and stop him.
Lucas stopped short from the door and shouted, “HEY I CALLED THE COPS SO SCRAM YOU ASSHOLE.”
The banging stop as we heard, “FUCK YOU,”
Lucas peeked again.
“he's gone,” I grabbed his hand as I led him to the kitchen.
“You scared me there for a sec,”
We sat at the kitchen table as I rubbed my face and stared at Lucas. He seemed depressed as he played with his hands, “Hey Lucas since when did you know?”
Lucas looked at me and smiled shyly. “Remember when Mom sent ya to summer camp the summer when you met Lucy there.”
I nodded as I remember I was twelve and was starting junior high that year, I did the math and Lucas was at least sixteen.
“Yeah yeah what about it?”
“Well I went to a baseball camp, I didn't tell ya because I was only there for a week. I left the day after you left. Well the thing is I met this guy there. Well the minute I saw him, I had all the confirmation I needed. I mean before that I would question it, like I couldn't believe it.” He smiled sadly as his eyes began to water. He looked down as he started writing with his finger on the table.
“His name was Brian, and man was there chemistry there. I mean the minute I saw him.” Lucas smiled as I notice this sparkle in his eyes.
“Well did you guys fool around?” I asked as I was intrigued, Lucas smiled brightly. “No We kissed, my first kiss with a guy and I knew. All my doubt where just thrown out the window. I mean I know I had a girlfriend freshman year, sure we kissed but this was just exhilarating.”
He smiled beaming with so much happiness, “you got caught,” I said as I figured out why he only lasted one week in baseball camp. Hi smiled disappeared.
He nodded, “they called Dad,”
I nodded as realization hit me, “has dad known all this time.”
“Yup Dad told me to keep it hidden until you turned eighteen. That way when mom found out you wouldn't be here for the downfall.”
“oh,” I said as everything made more sense, “that's why mom was even more pissed that day, because she found out dad knew.”
Lucas nodded as he stood up, “yeah but it's okay now. Mom can stay in denial all she wants, I don't care.”
“This is gonna be one crazy Christmas.”
December 24 1998 (5pm)
“Elizabeth please get the jug of water out of the fridge and set on the table.” I walked by mom as I opened the fridge and pulled out said water.
“Ma?” I turned to see Lucas peeking into the kitchen.
“what?” she snapped at him as he rolled his eyes, “Ma what else is missing I mean you have the table set. We want to eat.”
Mom glared at him, “Ma its true let's go eat we can clean up afterward.”
We were all trying extremely hard to be civilized, we were avoiding talking about Lucas sexuality, my break up with Justin and the argument Ma and me had before we left. Plus the fact that dad knew all of this but kept quiet.
We were trying but the tension was thick it was ripping at the seams. I was afraid of the confrontation.
The problem was we wanted to confront our mother, I blamed her slightly for the fight with Justin. She meddle in my relationship for her own gain and she made Lucas miserable by being in denial.
We sat at the table, I sat next to Lucas, Dad was seating at the head of the table and Mom was sitting at the other end.
We passed the food, we passed the bread, the water. Mom gave a brief prayer and we ate.
We ate in silence with the occasional praise about the food.
“Ma the ham came out real good.” Lucas said as he took a bite to emphasize his point, I nodded in agreement with him.
“Wish I could share it with more people.” she replied as I closed my eyes. Please, please no I prayed mentally.
Lucas didn't reply, we were being baited. She was taunting us, to start the argument.
“Mhm,” I mumbled as I took a bite of my sweet potatoes.
“Yeah It would have been nice to have Justin here. You two made a cute couple.” she said as she took a sip.
I felt Lucas tense as I saw my dad close his eyes and shook his head.
“Maggie lets just eat in peace.” he said as she gasped. “What am I doing? All I said was it would have been nice for Justin to eat here with us. I told him you were coming back to town. I'm surprise you two didn't talk and try to make up.”
I heard Lucas fork fall as I knew the dam had broken loose.
“Are you serious ma? Are fucking kidding me.” Lucas pushed his plate away and stood up.
“Lucas watch your language,”
“No ma I'm done and this is bullshit, I don't care what you think about me but the fact your messing with Ellie is total bull, because of you Justin hurt Ellie. That's why they really broke up.”
I closed my eyes as I felt my dad's eyes on me, I slowly turned to look at him as his right eye started to twitch.
“Dad it's ok Justin got his comeuppance, from a friend of mine.”
“yeah some dyke,” Mom said as I looked at her, “you knew and you still want me with him, what the hell ma, is there a loose screw somewhere in there.”
“Compare to the people your hanging out at that dorm of yours. They're heathens.”
“well then so am I” Lucas shouted as I stood up to hug him. He was crying as I was pushing him out the dinning room.
“Magdalene just stop,” Dad stood up as he patted Lucas on the arm and pulled him out of the room.
I was left with mom alone in the kitchen.
“Ma why are you such a bitch?”
“watch your mouth you ungrateful cunt,” My eyes snapped opened as I scoffed. “you are the most hypocritical woman I've ever met. Ma until you learn to be a decent human being I ain't coming back.”
I shook my head as I walked out to see Lucas bawling as I grabbed his hand.
“Come on let's go,” Lucas nodded as he stumble through the front door.
“Bye daddy,” He hugged me hard as he whispered, “I accept you too.”
December 25 (11pm)
I walked back to the dorms as I just couldn't stay back home. Lucas offered to drive me to the dorms, but I decide against it. It was dangerous to have him behind the wheel being so emotionally unstable, but I knew he wanted to be alone. Instead of him going off somewhere, I rather him locked himself in his place.
I walked into the lobby the lobby was decorated with lights and I heard noises coming from the Rec room. I walked by peeking in seeing people eating. Four long tables had been set as apparently a pot luck was arranged. There was a small tree decorate.
Most of the people were those who couldn't afford to go back home for the holidays or those whom really had nothing to go back to.
I turned around to walk towards the stairs when I felt a tap on my shoulders.
“your back early.”
I smiled as I saw Mel reaching for my bag.
“Here let me help ya, you look like hell.” I nodded as I surrender my bag and we walked towards the stairs.
“was it that bad?” she asked as I nodded.
“Ouch bummer,” she said as she held the door open for me as we walked onto our floor.
“what about you? Can't afford to go back home or nothing to go home for.” Mel chuckled as she shook her head.
“I'm from here, I live like on the other side of town, the bad side of town actually. But in reality there's no one really to go home to.” Mel nodded as she leaned against the wall as she waited for me to open my door.
“I'm sorry,” I said as I held my door opened. Mel walked in and set my bag on the bed.
“nah don't worry about it I'm ok.” She stood in the middle of the room as I coughed a little.
“Well I guess I'll see ya around.” Mel patted my shoulder as she walked out, she closed the door behind her.
I changed into my sleeping clothes, which was a pair of light green pajamas.
I collapsed on my bed as sighed.
I was emotionally exhausted.
Haley was gone for the holidays so she wasn't going to be back till January.
I laid in bed for what seemed the longest time and I realized I didn't want to be alone. I stood up as caught a glimpse on Haley's desk clock. It was a little pass twelve.
I grabbed my key and walked down the hallway and hesitated a little. I raised my hand to knock on Mel's door when the door opened suddenly.
I froze like a deer in headlights.
Mel chuckled as she stared at me, her hair was messy and she was dressed in a pair of dark blue pajama pants and a red shirt.
“I ummm,” I stuttered as she just nodded. “Just go in an make yourself comfortable I gotta go pee.” she walked by me as I saw her run down the hallway.
“Ok,” I muttered as I walked in. The room was organized, it was smaller but since it was a single it was meant for just one person.
I saw the sheets on the bed messy and the TV was actually on, but very low. It was the music channel and currently it was on commercials.
I turned around and saw a gift sitting on the desk, I found the tag and it read; From: Me To: Me.
I felt my heart drop as I heard Mel coming back. I turned around to see her walk in.
“do you want the door open or close?” she asked as I smiled at her chivalry.
“It's late it's safer if it's closed.” Mel nodded as she pulled out the door stopper and let it close. She sat on her bed as she tapped her fingers on her lap.
I sat next to her as I felt her tense up.
She notice me looking at the gift on the desk.
“It's pathetic I know,” she sighed as I grabbed her hand. I had no idea why I felt so bold around her.
“No it's not,”
“Oh come on I know you read the tag.” I was lost for words as I stood up and turned off the light.
Mel looked at me as she grabbed the remote and turned off the TV.
We were surrounded by darkness as I extend my hand and was met by hers. We laid down on the small bed. I was on my back with my eyes close.
Our shoulders were touching, she was breathing even.
“this is weird,” she said as I coughed.
“what being in bed with a hot chick,” I mentally slapped myself.
She laughed as she took a deep breath.
“Well that's one but I mean you and I are like strangers, acquaintances at best.”
“Ok then Well My name is Elizabeth McMullen, I'm eighteen my birthday was in May.”
Mel laughed, “Ok I'll bite, My name is Melissa Diaz I'm eighteen and my birthday was back in June.”
We both laughed as I felt her shift and move, I felt her breath on my neck as she had turned onto her side.
“My plan is to major in business administration,” I said as she whistle, “nifty, well I'm majoring in computer science.”
“Nerd,” I teased.
“Ha ha ha what ever,” she said as she cleared her throat and shifted again.
“Do you want me to leave?” I asked as I turned on my side and extended my hand felt her back. She had turned away to face the wall.
“It's up to you Ellie, Everything is up to you.”
(A/N Don't you just hate Maggie, essentially that was my initial idea with Maggie I wanted to create someone that was so hate-able. I know people are always falling in love with the 'lovable character,' well i wanted one that was so despicable. That there is no shame in hating this individual.)
