Half-Way Point

A/N: I was going to wait until I had written the complete mission before I posted this chapter but I reached a decent stopping point just after I reached 25,000 words so I decided I'd post anyway. It's just.... fluffy. Kind of. And I wanted to post because I woke up to an amazing review this morning and it made my day.

Thanks to Gslinger for reviewing, everyone else for reading, and my friends on Gaia for being encouraging and interested.

Gslinger: Your review made me have a wonderful morning and a great day. I'm glad you enjoyed it so much and that the qualities I'd been attempting actually made their way through into the actual story, that's always nice to know. I would say that Company Lady did not plan this at all because I hadn't really intended that but Real Life Company Lady (or at least the person from whom the character is unabashedly based on as she wanted to be in my story) often insists that she is a Soothsayer and would probably take credit even if she hadn't thought about it.

I spent a while trying to figure out why you seemed familiar. And then I read chapters two and three of Needs of a Sorcerer and remembered.

And, you wanted more story so... more story you shall have. This one is for you.

The quiet moment was broken in the palpable shift of awareness as Aiden went from living in the real world to being stuck in a vision of the future. Ty had thought he might go limp and lifeless but instead he was tense and unyielding which was in actuality a bit creepier than had he would have expected. He thought he would have preferred if Aiden were limp because then it would be like he were sleeping cuddled up to him but his tenseness was a constant reminder that he was trapped in an internal world he couldn’t escape from until it had run it’s course.

How long would it last? Ty knew that with his own powers it took less than a second to absorb the thoughts and memories of those around him. It took only a moment, the instant of a switch flicking to stop someone’s heart beating. It took a little longer to steal someone’s deeper memories and longer still to order them into some kind of rational arrangement like words on paper but really, it took no time at all. And when a person was dreaming.... complex dreams that seemed to span days could occur in minutes of REM sleep.

Usually, when Aiden had little “flashes” they weren’t noticeable at all. He might react afterward, blink slowly as he digested the information and chose to react to it but while it was happening there was no difference or indication. Ty had never seen him employ the secondary tactic so he didn’t know what that looked like or how long it took him. The fact that he’d wanted to curl up and sit down might imply that it was going to take some time except that if he had no touch with the real world while he was having a vision you would want to sit down because otherwise you would fall.

But in the end he didn’t know and he could only wait. He touched Aiden’s hair. It was as stiff as he had expected, sculpted into little spikes with gel and crunchy with the same dried substance. Aiden’s face was buried against his shoulder and he could feel the warm damp spot in his clothes his breath was creating. He moved his hand to rest on Aiden’s back and feel the way his chest rose and fell in measured movements. He rubbed his hand up and down a little, willing the tension in his body to relax and Aiden’s mind to return to the here-and-now.

Aiden drew in a shuddering breath and drew his arms up over his head, rocking a little. He seemed really upset now but Ty was fairly sure he was back in the real world. “Shh.” He shushed even though Aiden wasn’t saying anything. “It’s not real. It hasn’t happened yet. It doesn’t have to happen.” He soothed and continued to rub his back, trying to comfort him. He wasn’t sure how successful he was being. He knew he was making the right motions but couldn’t be sure if he was doing them in a way that was actually comforting.

“Do you want to talk about it?” Ty asked after a while when Aiden seemed to have calmed down somewhat. Aiden shook his head mutely and snuggled closer to the older male again.

“Talking about it will make it more real, more likely to happen.” Aiden muttered into his shirt. “Can we go to bed?” He asked in a small voice. “Actually, can we eat something and then go to bed?” He amended. Ty was mildly confused. Aiden had pointed out several times that Ty was not his mother and had no right to tell him to stop watching porn or go to bed or anything else so it seemed strange that he was asking permission now. But it finally occurred to him that Aiden wanted to sleep in his bed with him. He wasn’t sure but- well...

“Okay.” He said finally. “What do you want to eat?” Aiden looked thoughtful.

“Cookies or chips or cake or something. Do we have Little Debbie snacks left?” Ty had to think about it but finally he nodded.

“Yeah. And those Thunder Chips you like.” Aiden carefully unfolded himself and reluctantly pulled away from the blonde. He stood up but grabbed Ty’s hand and tugged, encouraging him to get up and, once standing, follow him into the kitchen.

“I’m making hot chocolate.” Aiden announced and began to get out the ingredients necessary to do so while Ty got out the Little Debbie cakes. Aiden finished fairly quickly and they both sat and had a snack and hot chocolate in silence. When they were done Ty hesitated. Despite the fact that it had seemed okay to invite Aiden to sleep in his bed before he wasn’t so sure now. He’d never slept next to another person before and wasn’t at all sure he’d enjoy it. And worse, what if Aiden thought he’d agreed to having sex through some unvoiced nuance of innuendo that Ty had never really understood?

He hadn’t thought any emotion had shown on his face but something must have betrayed his thoughts to Aiden because the younger male rolled his eyes at him and sighed. “You haven’t even slept in the same bed as someone before?” He asked incredulously. Ty shook his head. “Sometimes I wonder if you’re not secretly younger than I am somehow.” He grabbed Ty’s hand and tugged him to his feet. He studied his expression for a moment before he started walking backward toward Ty’s bedroom so they were still face-to-face. Ty had to wonder how he navigated like that without tripping over his own feet.

Once inside his room Aiden stripped and changed into a pair of the blonde’s sleep pants and t-shirt, he gave Ty a challenging look until he mutely did the same. Ty looked at the bed hesitantly but apparently Aiden wasn’t having any of that. He lunged suddenly and tackled Ty back on the bed. Ty landed with am ‘oooomf’ as the air was knocked from his lungs. He quickly drew a breath to protest but Aiden started to wrestle him which he apparently found boring after a minute of no reaction so he switched to tickling instead. Ty laughed until his stomach hurt and the corners of his eyes were wet with tears and he ordered the younger male to stop between gasping breaths.

Aiden flopped down on the bed and pulled the rumpled blanket up over them. “You were a deprived child.” He muttered and cuddled against Ty, coaxing the blonds arms around him and buried his face against his chest again. Ty drew in a deep breath and slowly let it out. He felt... better but couldn’t quite understand how Aiden knew just what to do all the time. He nuzzled his spiky blue hair for a moment before he laid his head on the pillow and closed his eyes. He wasn’t sure how long it would take him to get to sleep like this.

Disoriented, heart pounding, it took Ty several moments to locate the source of the god-awful alarm that was going off. It was from his clock, of course and it was going off at such a horrible hour because they had to go to the airport today. He felt irritated and nauseous as he turned the alarm off, a distinct counter-point to how warm and comfortable he had been feeling a moment ago. It took a little while longer for it to occur to him that Aiden was still cuddled up against him. He stared at him, confused, until he opened his one visible eye, appearing as annoyed as Ty felt and mumbled something that might have been asking if they really had to get up now. “Unfortunately.”

As comfortable as they had been sleeping together it was still a little awkward as they took turns using the bathroom and getting dressed. When they were ready they got their bags for the plane and went down to the waiting cab. Ty figured he’d rather get a cab to the airport than have to pay to park his car there while they were gone. The cab driver did not comment onhow the both looked like half-asleep zombies at this hour. He didn’t say anything to them at all but spent the ride singing cheerfully along to the radio in a language Ty could neither recognize nor understand so he found it rather peaceful and relaxing. He almost fell asleep again but Aiden poked him awake.

Getting to the airport was horrible. Even this early in the morning it was crowded. Even psychic powers not withstanding Ty didn’t think he was a fan of large crowds. He never attended concerts and didn’t even like going to the significantly less crowded mall. He felt nauseous again and wanted to throw up as the press of voices buzzed around his head dizzily. He raised a hand to his temple and rubbed at it. Aiden slung his arm around his waist and guided him to the line they had to wait in. Ty hunched his shoulders and wondered if he looked as miserable as he felt. He suspected so.

It was just. He could concentrate on one person but it was still loud. He knew if he tried to read it would be the same way. Aiden stuck his tongue in his ear. Ty was not as grossed out as he would have ordinarily expected to be under similar circumstances but looked at the blue-haired male with a frown. Did he have some kind of strange ear fetish? “Nice to have you back.” Aiden said dryly. “I’m glad you’re one of those neurotic people who cleans their ears really well. Now get out your passport and our tickets.” Ty could only give him a strange look before doing as told. They reached the front of the line, tickets scanned, passports checked. Went through the metal detectors and had their baggage checked over.

Aiden asked where he wanted to eat since they still had to wait, of course. Airport policy: “Hurry up and get here two hours early so you can wait an hour and a half in this hellish place.” He winced when Aiden pinched him. “Hey.” The younger man said. “Look. Look. At. Me. Focus. Just on me. You can do that, right?” Ty looked at him and tried to focus on Aiden, he’d never really tried it before because Aiden didn’t have any surface thoughts for him to focus on. He heard a strange ringing noise like his ears were ringing. Aiden frowned, Ty smiled. “So how is that?” He asked.

“Mildly irritating.” Ty responded and felt himself smiling a little wider. “Which is a massive improvement.” And again he had to wonder how Aiden was so good at this.
