Chapter eleven

Kieran was always a late riser. His father used to complain that if he wouldn’t have woken up Kieran every morning he would sleep clean through to the next day. ‘What the old guy doesn’t understand is it takes a lot of energy to have that much naughty fun late at night.’

For the past few months Kieran had gotten used to sleeping either waking up to his stomach growling or insane and foolish Knights wielding swords as they screamed and ran at him, giving away the element of surprise. He smirked and thought, ‘Not that even that would have helped them much.’

For the last two days in a row, he had been awoken by at what Kieran considered an Ungodly hour by the same scrawny-ass lad, by stumbling right into Kieran’s head. The boy didn’t have a clue how lucky he was. Kieran’s brain identified him as a mate instead of a possible threat that needed to be squashed.

Instead, the worse that Keiran did was growl a little. He couldn’t really blame the boy for his inability to see when all the Posrothaina stones had gone out. A quick mindlink checked that his little one was not trying to escape again so Kieran sent the boy off as he went back to his nice dream of doing naughty deeds to said boy. Had he been able to transform into his humanoid form he would have turned those dreams into reality as he punished the boy for daring to wake him, good reason or not.

When he finally did get up it was because his stomach was touching his back bone with hunger. He could tell that his body had made another growth spurt during the night. It was likely be his last spurt as he was already on the large size as far as dragons went. He only knew a few larger dragons then himself in his family clan, his father, his uncle Cormac, and his good friend Taz.

The growth spurt was making his cave lair a little bit uncomfortable but it would still work ‘til he figured something else out or he was ready to head home. Besides, it was still the safe spot to house Skif until the boy learned to trust him more.

As Kieran made his way out of the chambers he took the time to relight the stones. He was proud when he noticed how productive Skif had been by the bags of collected apples playing next to the entrance.

He couldn’t suppress his laughter when Skif thought of himself as a toy. ‘Oh baby, you don’t know how close to true you are, but still so far off.’ Kieran was pleased that Skif wanted to learn about him. It meant that he was making the efforts to open up to him.

The look on Skif’s face when he was confused by Kieran’s offer to talk later was so damn cute he had to laugh.

Kieran couldn’t resist flaunting his superior flying skills to his future mate. He took pride in showing off every trick he had learned. He could feel Skif’s amazement and joy through the mindlink which had gotten damped down to just a feeling with his growing distance and lack of energy.

Eventually his stomach made him quit and he had to set off to find his breakfast.

‘Maybe that herd of cattle to the east of the village will do? I haven’t hit that one yet and it’s farther from the village and the nearby farms so I will be less likely to run into annoying, ticked off farmers… Wait. Since when do I care about farmers…? First those damn Knights, then that shepherd boy and now farmers. Man, that boy is really changing me.’

The herd turned out to be exactly where he last remembered seeing them. The cattle were too stupid to run when his shadow passed over them; it took him doing a controlled dive down for them to sense the danger and start stampeding for the hills. Kieran still managed to take down two large heifers, fatted by feeding on the sweet grasses of their pasture all summer. While holding one down with his front foot, he made short work of the second one.

He was just about to start eating the second one when he was broadsided in the shoulder by a very angry bull. Although the bull’s sharp horns slipped easily off his near indestructible scales, the force behind the bull’s attack was enough to send Kieran tumbling to his side, giving the second heifer a chance to make a run for it.

Kieran was none too pleased to watch his intended breakfast make a seemingly successful retreat. Before he could regain his balance the enraged bovine made a second attack, sending Kieran falling to his side, leaving his own underbelly exposed. ‘What the fuck is his problem? I thought that cows were cowards? Well it appears this bull didn’t get that message. Fucker. He just made himself my next meal.’

A glance at the bull showed that he was coming around for a third strike. With a lightning-quick snap of his tail, Kieran sent the bull flying end over end for several yards. By the time Kieran was up on his feet and had covered the distance between him and the fool-hardy bull, the beast was just making it to his feet, apparently uninjured but quite dazed.

Kieran made quick work of the bull. ‘I probably did the farmer of this little monster a favor eating the damn thing.’

With his belly filled Kieran decided to make his way to a rocky outcropping. He stretched himself over the warm, exposed rocks allowing the heat of the sun and rocks to soothe his body, aiding his digestion.

Kieran felt like being lazy rather than making his way back towards his lair in a hurry. ‘It’s not that I don’t want to be with Skif… I just need some time to myself… and I think he could use some time away from me. I still have to figure out what to do about those damn Knights. It’s clear that I’m not going to solve anything by eating them. Skif will never forgive me… Not to mention the more I hear that Damn Sir Erik the less enticing the idea of eating him becomes. I’m not sure he won’t give me something…’

Shifting to his left side, Kieran continued to think. ‘Letting them go is a not an option, no matter what Skif might think. They would never just leave. Best case they would try to kill me again. Worst case they might bring in an army… Either case would be bad. Skif might get caught up in the fighting and even be killed. I won’t put him in harm’s way like that.’

A small shadow flew past him. Kieran looked up to see a goshawk soar over head; the bird seemed too intent on its hunting to give a thought for Kieran. As a fellow predator of the sky Kieran watched the little killer circle around in the thermals until she found her prey. Kieran open a temporary, simple mindlink between them, allowing him to feel the bird’s elation as her eyes locked on her prey. He surveyed as the sky hunter dove into the tree line of the thick old growth forest not far from the outcropping Kieran lay upon. The arm rush of joy through the mindlink was the only indicator the goshawk was successful.

Soon after Kieran saw her rise again, this time carrying a large piece of meat, taking it off to eat it somewhere safer. As she flew off towards the forest nestled against the base of the mountains, an idea struck Kieran.

‘The Mountains! I bet you there might be some giants or mountain trolls that live in there. I think I remember seeing this mountain range as being part of the Ogres’’ territory on that map in Dad’s office… The giants are supposed to allies with the elves. Most elves are great telepaths. If I can find one of their villages maybe I can talk them into taking the damn knights. Ogres keep slaves, and I have never heard of any of them escaping. All I ever heard about them was how harsh they were on them, but it can’t be any worse than the knights deserve… Hell, if they have an elf, he might be able to talk to Skif, and explain to my poor boy what’s going on.’

It didn’t take Kieran long to get airborne after his revelation; he hastily made his way to the white peaks and the promise of salvation for all his problems.

He quickly flew past the cave, opening his mind link as he passed just to check on the boy, just in case he was needed. But Skif was fine; he was wrapped up in sorting out the debris pile. Kieran knowing that his carrier would be fine ‘til he got back, he turned his attention to searching the mountains for giants.

*********

It was nearly sunset when Kieran finally ended up returning to the cave, having found no signs of giants in the area. A little disheartened but still very hopeful, he determined to continue the search again. ‘I should have known that they wouldn’t be this close to any human civilizations. They’re probably much further in. I’ll just have to start earlier and fly farther in tomorrow.’

As he came in for a landing he could see Skif make a hasty retreat back into the cave entrance. Kieran was confused at Skif’s behaviour until he opened the mindlink once again.

The carrier had worked all afternoon until the light of the Posrothaina stones had finally given out. Rather than remaining in the cold darkness of the cave, he had decided to wait out on the sunny ledge in front of the cave. He had only retreated back to the safety of the cave to give Kieran more room to land as the ledge already held the large, downed apple tree.

Skif rushed Kieran as soon as he had all feet firmly on the ground only to stop a few feet away, nervously shifting from one foot to another. His warm face smiled up at him, but Kieran could feel the boy’s relief when he finally landed. The carrier had started to fear a little that Kieran might have abandoned him. He had been expecting him to return several candle marks ago, to talk with him like he had said.

Waves of guilt hit Kieran full force, when he realized he had forgotten his promise.
‘Oh little one, I’m so sorry. I completely forgot about my promise to talk to you. I should have come back sooner. How stupid of me to leave you out here all alone in the cold. I should have known the lights would go out.’ He picked up his confused mate and cuddled him close to his heart, silently willing the boy to understand how sorry he was.

He saw how Skif did his best to behave as if was nothing was wrong, which only made Kieran feel all that much worse. “Llyr, I’m so glad your back. Did you manage to find something to eat? I was just taking a break and enjoying the sunset. It is amazing from up here; you can see for leagues.”

Kieran didn’t care about the sunset All he wanted was to assure Skif that he would never be left behind again. ‘Why is it so hard with you? I never seem to do anything right when it comes to you. I promise to do better, okay?’ Holding the boy close to his chest, bathing him in his own natural high body heat, he took him inside. When he got to the pond chamber he put his mate down and began to light every Posrothaina stone in the room.

Just when he finished lighting the last stone, Skif’s small, gentle hand touched Kieran’s side, trying to get his attention. “Llyr, I have a favour to ask you... Ummmm, if you don’t mind? Milord Erik and the other Knights have been without food, water or light since last night. I know you don’t like them and you don’t want to help them but could you please allow me to take care of their needs again...? I have everything ready to go right over there. Look, I even went and got the leash... I mean the rope.” As he spoke, Skif went to the pile of supplies he had prepared by the knights’ prison and got the rope that Kieran had last seen rolled up next to the nest.

He could tell his boy was ready to tie it around his waist should Kieran give him any indication that he was going to help the knights, but did not want to pressure Kieran. The nervous look on Skif’s dirty face was just too cute. ‘Yes little one. You can feed the damn knights.’ Kieran thought as he nodded.

As cute as his carrier’s worried face was it could not even compare to the look of joy and relief on his face that the boy flashed him with when Kieran said yes. ‘Oh Baby with a face like that you’re making it hard to even think about saying no to you.’

Skif set to work tying the rope tightly around his waist. It was quite clear that he had no qualms about putting the leash on this time. After what happened last time he had seen his lord Skif’s undying trust in his former master was slowly eroding. Kieran could not find it in himself to feel bad about that. ‘If only there was a way I could also break the boy’s unquestioning loyalty to the prick too. Now that would be great.’

Before Skif could even ask, Kieran grabbed the nearest Posrothaina stone and placed it next to the boulder door. He knew that Skif would appreciate the extra light when dealing with the knights and would probably figure that Kieran was simply giving the knights some light and warmth. But Kieran had a little more in mind, ‘I think it’s time I reminded those bastards who their keeper is.’

Once Skif was finished tying the rope to his waist securely, he brought other end of the leash to Kieran, who took it and wrapped it around his own hand.

Skif turned around to make sure everything was ready before he went and forewarned the Knights they were coming. Kieran could feel the boy’s subtle quiver of fear pass along the length connected to the boy.

Kieran snapped his fingers to get Skif’s attention. Using hand gestures he offered as much reassurance as he could. “They no hurt you. I stop them. I no eat them. I no hurt them. Trust me.” All he got was a confused look in response.

Without waiting for Skif to figure it out, Kieran moved the boulder aside, startling the unprepared Knights, who were suddenly blinded as the light obliterated the darkness from their world. It appeared he had caught most of them sleeping, with the exception of Lord Erik who appeared to be having a sip of water from one of the water skins that had been left last night.

Quick as lighting, Kieran grabbed his intended prey not too gently and pulled him to his face. The man called Sir Erik quickly launched into name calling and swearing as he feebly fought for his escape from Kieran. Kieran was not in the mood for his foolishness, so he gave him a little shake until he quieted down. The other knights watched on in horror.

When the annoying Knight finally shut his trap, Keiran slowly started to gesture, taking time with each gesture and putting as much angry passion he could into each move. First he pointed at the knight, then making the touch gesture by touching his own arm, then pointing at Skif. Kieran could clearly see that the arrogant bastard didn’t get it, so he squeezed him a bit (to help him focus of course) and then repeated the gestures.

Kieran’s plan to increase the pressure each time the bastard failed to grasp the simple message was cut short when Skif’s trembling, confused voice spoke up. ‘Damn. Just when this was getting good. I could have had his head pop off and been done with him.’

“Milord Erik... Please, Llyr is trying to talk to you. He is trying to tell you not to touch me. Sir, I think it would be best if you agreed with him... He’s probably still mad that you touched... Ah, that you got to close to me yesterday... Please promise him you won’t do it again, I’m pretty sure he will let you go afterwards.” Skif was standing right to the knight on the ground, hands clasped and pleading for the Knight to cooperate.

“You’re telling me this...*cough* foul beast is *cough*...trying to talk to me?” Erik’s voice was broken by fits of coughing from having the air literally squeezed out of him, but he still managed to put disbelief and disdain in his voice. “The beast could not possibly be capable of conversing with people. It’s more likely that you have bewitched the demon with some witch power and are now controlling him. I knew I should never have taken you as my squire when I first heard those rumours that your family was of the witching kind. If I survive this I shall personally see that every single member of your family is burned at the stake after I have cleaved your traitorous head clean off your body. Now call off your damn dragon, witch and I may let you and your family live...”

The Knight continued to make demands but Kieran stopped listening.

‘Wow. I didn’t think it was possible for anyone to be this stupid and live this long.
It takes a special kind of arrogance to threaten the only person who is trying to save you and then demand them to help you. But at least after this I don’t think Skif will be as mad at me if I kill him.’

Kieran couldn’t stand the knight’s spiteful drabble any more so he gave him a tighter squeeze, pushing all the air from his lungs and kept the pressure on so that the knight could just barely get enough air but not quite enough to talk again.

He then turned his attention to a very shocked Skif. Kieran could feel the hurt and betrayal mixed together in a whirlwind inside the boy along with near violent rage.

It took several snaps with his free hand to get the boy’s attention before Skif responded and looked at him. Kieran pointed at the supplies and then at the open prison chamber with the three other bewildered knights still inside. For a second Kieran thought his furious mate would just tell him to forget it and let the knights starve, but no matter how hurt he was Skif’s kind heart would not let anyone, even his oppressors, suffer.

Ignoring the suspicious and fearful glances from the other Knights, he watched as Skif started to take the supplies inside, returning with empty bags and water skins. It took several trips but he worked quickly. He did not interact with the Knights until he brought in a particularly heavy bag and all he said was, “Here. These are some more clean bandages and pain- and paste-packets. Sir Fredrick’s wounds need to be tended daily.” None of the Knights stepped forwards so Skif just dropped it next to the other pile of supplies and grabbed the disgusting buckets of human waste and made his way out of the prison chamber and headed for the ledge outside.

Taking Skif’s silent exit as a cue, Kieran tossed the annoying bastard back into the prison. He then grabbed the glowing boulder of Posrothaina he had placed nearby earlier and brought it in front of his face. Taking a deep breath, Kieran call forth the Fire the dwelled deep inside him. It came rushing up his throat with a deafening roar, as he blasted the stone with more than hot breath. The stone was bathed in blue fire; the effect was that the stone would be too hot to touch and too bright to look at for some time. More importantly, the display would frighten the stupid Knights, and if they ever thought of touching his precious mate to be again they must be suicidal. ‘And I will be happy to help them with that.’

Kieran quickly placed the stone inside and grabbed the other unlighted stone and for good measure he glared at the knights, showing pearly white and sharp teeth as he growled loud.

No one moved, not even the jerk Sir Erik, who just lay where he was thrown and watched Kieran with true fear in his eyes.

Kieran slammed the boulder back in place, once again trapping them inside.
