Chapter 12

The slam of the phone echoed through the room. “Fucking bastard,” Eric bellowed. “I swear he’ll fucking pay for everything he’s done to my family!”

Jake looked up from the book he was studying. He’d followed the whole phone conversation. Hell, the people down the street probably heard.

“Tell me you’re going,” Jake said as he watched Eric pace back and forth.

“That’s a stupid fucking question!” Eric bit out.

Jake flinched at the harshness of Eric’s voice but he didn’t take it personally. He knew all about Eric’s stepdad and why Eric hated him so much.

“I’m sorry, man, didn’t mean to bite your head off,” Eric murmured as he stopped to face Jake.

“It’s okay, man, no biggy.” Jake smiled, trying to reassure Eric.

“I hate him, Jake,” Eric said as tears fell from his dark eyes.

“I know. Can’t you do something? There’s got to be something you can do.”

Sitting down on his bed, Eric shook his head. “I’ve tried, even got up enough courage to report him the cops. “

“What happened?” Jake asked, sitting up in bed.

“Nothing, that’s what happened. My step dad is one slick bastard. The cops did their little investigation but could never prove anything. Eventually the investigation was dropped and that’s how I ended up here.”

Jake shook his head, “That’s fucked up.”

“Yeah and now I’m not even there to protect Orlando,” Eric said, slamming his fist into the mattress.

“What about your dad?”

“What about him?”

“There must be something he can do.” Jake’s voice became cautious. Eric never talked about his real dad and didn’t know if he was even alive.

Eric stared into space, his mind trying to focus on a blurred image of his real dad. He could still remember the day he was ten and Orlando was four. He was holding his little brother on his lap, playing with a little toy car, when he heard his mother and father yelling. Then it was over, just like that. He saw his father with a suitcase in his hand, walking up to them, getting down on one knee. Orlando was too young to remember but Eric took everything his dad said to heart. “I need you to protect your mother and your little brother, Eric. They both need you” Eric nodded his little head, giving a reassuring smiling. Eric’s dad stood up, walked out the door, never once glancing back.

“I don’t know how to locate him, or if I even want to,” Eric mumbled, drawing himself back to the present.

“I think for Orlando’s sake, you need to try,” Jake stated passionately, “If it could help get Orlando out of that mad man’s clutches, isn’t it worth trying?”

Eric remembered the last time he was allowed to see Orlando. How his little brother cried when he walked out the front door. God, he had to do something, but what?

“If I try anything, Jake, and it backfires, I will lose my little brother for good,” Eric explained, his voice void of all emotion.

Staring at a broken man, Jake shook his head. “You have to try, Eric,” his passionate voice rose in volume. “Orlando needs someone to try because he can’t do it himself.”

Eric put his head in his hands and started to cry. He cried for his lost mother, who was in love with a monster. And for his little brother, that didn’t deserve what was happening to him. And at last, he cried for himself, for not being the protector he promised his father he would be.

“Contact him, Eric. Orlando is still a minor.”

“Don’t you fucking see?” Eric roared as he stood up. “If it fails or if Vin finds out I was starting trouble again, I could never see Orlando again.”

“He wouldn’t keep you two apart, would he?” Jake asked uncertain.

“Hell, Jake, the only reason he asked me to Orlando’s birthday party was because of Orlando. God knows what he had to do to convince that fucking bastard to invite me. I don’t want to think how he did it,” Eric said as he fell to his knees, sobbing, not giving a damn if he seemed weak.

Jake sat in stunned silence.

“That bastard could tell Orlando that I died and he would be none the wiser. Vin could have me killed and tell Orlando I was in a car accident. Gods,” Eric bellowed out, “Don’t you think I don’t want to help him and my mother?”

Jake shook his head. This really was a messed up situation. “All I ask is that you think about It, Eric. This fucked up situation isn’t going to get any better by itself.”

Eric crawled into his bed and laid back. He had gotten Orlando a birthday present weeks ago but wondered if Vin was going to call him. “Bastard,” Eric murmured. Vin waited until the last moment to invite him: his little brother’s birthday was tomorrow. He knew Jake was right; he had to do something. He noticed his visits and phones calls from Orlando became less and less each year. But what could he do? Whatever he chose to do, he had to make sure it was the right choice. Closing his eyes, he drifted off to sleep, his mind returning to a happier time where there were no monsters and certainly no evil step dads.
