The hours that had passed for Elizabeth hadn't been the easiest. Evan had gotten her to a place where she could lay down. It was a small cabin hidden in the deepest part of the forest. If you didn't know it was there then you probably wouldn't ever find it. And if you did, you wouldn't find your way back to the world you once knew.
When they had arrived, the cloaks covering them were smoking. Elizabeth was just happy that they hadn't burned to death. Her skin had turned to a light shade of pink. It was better than it had been. She still felt somewhat weak but it was lessening. Evan's skin only looked a little less pale. They had only been there a few minutes, not long enough to even start talking when a small door opened in the floor. It made Elizabeth jump. A woman with remarkable green hair had popped her head in to tell Evan that someone called Tyler had found out that he had been been missing for a day and that Tyler knew Elizabeth was gone. Evan had become infuriated at the mention of his name and that this girl, who ever she was, had bruises from her neck up.
Evan gathered Elizabeth up and followed the green haired girl the same way she had entered the cabin. None of them spoke as they made their way through the passage. They went an hour in silence until Elizabeth couldn't take it anymore. She needed to know where they were going and why. And why a were-animal was helping two vampires.
"Would one of you say something? Please?" Elizabeth asked trying to be nice about it.
"What would you like us to say?" the woman asked. Her voice was surprisingly smooth. Like chocolate. It startled Elizabeth a little.
"Who are you? Where are we going and why can't I go home?" she sounded like a child. But she didn't care. She'd been through too much in too short a time.
"Set her down, Evan." the woman said. Evan knelt and sat Elizabeth on the cold rock under them. Evan and the woman sat beside her.
"Do you want to explain?" Evan asked. The girl nodded.
"My name is Paige Reynolds. I'm Evan's half sister." Elizabeth looked at Paige like an idiot. "We were attacked by different things" she explained answering the question in Elizabeth's eyes. "To explain what we're doing, I'll need to start from the beginning."
"This might take awhile." Evan muttered. Paige glared at him.
"You know that the were-animals and vampires haven't been on good terms for hundreds of years." Elizabeth nodded. "Well my pard belongs to the local town. It has been crippled beyond reformation. Tyler, our new master, has destroyed us. Picking off those who do not support him. This past year has been hell for all those who remain. Tyler's purpose is to take over weak pards and wolf packs, making one army of were-animals. He wishes to move towards Oregon, your home, to destroy you. To take over the strongest pard and turn towards your house hold. Tyler has the bright idea to try and take over as many pards and packs and use them to destory vampires. He hates them with all of his being. He will find a way to kill you all."
"And where do you fit into all this?" Elizabeth asked accusingly.
"I chose death. I wanted it more than anything but to stay here. But Tyler chose me to carry on his legacy. to provide him with a son. I am bound to him until one of us die. I've tried running away but I am always found, always punished severely." Evan's breathing picked up. He wasn't of fond of his sister being asked.
"Is that what happened this time?" Elizabeth softly.
"No, this time I wouldn't lay with him. I'm sick of being used like this. But there is nothing I can do about it for now."
"Why are you helping me?"
"Because I want Tyler stopped. I do not want your family to die. I actually honor Maurice. Saving you means that you can tell him what is happening before it's too late. The hope for us all is for you to get home safely. That is why I am helping you." Elizabeth stared at Paige. She sounded like someone who was sure of herself. Liz admired that. Her eyes lingered on Paige's face then traveled down her neck and rested on her stomach. She reached her hand out and lay her fingertips gently on Paige's abdomen. She could fell a light pulsing being followed by another immediate pulse. Elizabeth's eyes flicked up to Paige's.
"How long?" Elizabeth asked, her voice full of sympathy. Paige pressed her hand over Liz's.
"A couple months. You're the first to know." Evan stood straight up in a movement that was too fast to see. He slammed his fists into the rock walls causing new cracks in the dark stone.
"Why? Why didn't you tell me that you're already carrying that bastard's child?" Paige came to her feet.
"That bastard's child is also mine and your niece or nephew. Just because Tyler's the father doesn't mean that this baby will follow in his footsteps. I will see Tyler dead before I let that happen."
"You didn't trust me enough to tell me?" Evan sounded almost heartbroken.
"Of course I trust you. But I had to make sure that the baby was going to live. You know how hard it is for one of us to become pregnant and finding the safest way to prevent the change." Evan didn't look like he was calm down, but to Elizabeth's amazement, he did.
"I'm sorry, Paige. I didn't mean to snap at you. It's just, I can't stand the way that he treats you." Paige put her arms around his neck and hugged him tightly.
"I know, but I'll be fine." she whispered. Evan held onto her like she was the last piece of sanity in his life. Now Elizabeth stood.
"I know there are many difference between our people, tell me, when are you due?"
"Next month. We don't carry a child as long as humans do. I'll be lucky to make it another week. This thing wants out of me." Paige said, moving back a little from Evan. Liz was silent.
"Come with me." she said.
"What?" Evan asked lightly.
"Both of you. Come with me to Oregon. The baby will be safe and Maurice can grant you sanctuary on the count of excessive cruelty and for the information you possess." Evan and Paige looked at each other unsure. "Please, just think of it as my baby shower gift." she added with a smile.
"I would love to say yes, but what about the ones who stay behind? My pard and Evan's kiss? We can't leave them behind."
"You two come with me, tell Maurice of the ones who are loyal to the two of you and he will spare them once he takes over Tyler's plans."
"Would that work?" Evan asked.
"It would." Elizabeth said firmly. Paige looked at Evan.
"I'm in if you are, sis." Paige put a hand to her stomach.
"Let's do it. I'd rather have a vampire master than the one I'm with now." A high pitched scream erupted in the tunnel. The three had to cover their ears from the sound.
"Oh, God." Paige whispered.
"Move it!" Evan said pushing them both forward. "Run!" They didn't hesitate. They ran. Heavy footsteps came from behind them. What ever was back there was running to catch up. Elizabeth could feel it's hot breath on her neck. It chilled her to the bone. She started to turn her head to see what was there but Evan pulled on her arm. "Do not look behind you." Elizabeth snapped her head forward again and started to run even faster. She didn't know what was after them. Wanting to know could cause potential death.
Elizabeth didn't know how far they had run before the steps behind them disappeared. It had been replaced by a loud rumble. As if something was rolling under dirt. Only more dangerous.
Something rolled under Elizabeth's feet causing her to go up in the air farther at an incline as it rolled under her. The thing moved faster and went out from under Liz's feet and she ran on the normal stone again. The tunnel ahead of them was getting darker but they could all still see well enough to not trip.
Ahead of her, Evan fell to the ground. His feet to his waist was hidden beneath the rock. Elizabeth dropped to her knees abruptly and grabbed his arms.
"Evan!" Paige screamed. The sound reverberated in the tunnel. Elizabeth tightened her grip on his arms. Evan held onto her with all he had.
"Don't let go!" Elizabeth said. She could feel his hands start to slip. He was up to his chest in the rock now.
"Let go, Elizabeth! I don't want you coming with me!" he shouted. Elizabeth's hands were starting to enter the rock. "Paige!" he yelled. She reached forward and grabbed Elizabeth by the waist and pulled her back. Evan's hands slid off Elizabeth and he was sucked under the rock.
"Evan!" Elizabeth screamed. She ran her hands frantically over the cold stone.
"He's gone." Paige said quietly. Elizabeth turned to look at her. Paige's face was blank. She was in shock mode. Her eyes were too wide, too much white was showing. Elizabeth came to her feet and walked to Paige, she put her hands on Paige's shoulders and looked directly in her eyes.
"Paige?" she said. Paige didn't move. "Where did he go?" Paige looked at the ground and then back to Elizabeth, who shook her. "Where he is?"
"The dark place." she whispered. Tears began to fall down her cheeks.
"Is he still alive?" Elizabeth asked.
"I don't know." Paige told her. From where they stood they could hear a distant and muffled scream.
