Chapter Twelve

I awoke the next morning to the smell of coffee wafting under my door. It was a heavenly smell and brought a smile to my face. It also made me a little frightened.

I sat up and threw the blankets off my legs, grabbing my gun and heading toward the door. I only had one roommate and she didn’t drink coffee.

I didn’t think about the fact that I was wearing little more than panties and a tank that looked more like a bra. I was only concerned with the fact that someone was making coffee in my house and they shouldn’t be.

I turned the corner to the kitchen; gun trained on the perpetrator, and sighed, lowering the gun. I put my hand to my head and leaned against the wall.

“Damn it, Harper. You shouldn’t do something like that to me. Hasn’t anyone ever told you that if you’re in the house of a bounty hunter whose roommate is a vampyre, you don’t make coffee first thing in the morning? You scared me to death.”

Harper jumped at the sound of my voice and I smiled, glad that I had given him the shock he had given me. He turned around and smiled brightly, shaking his head. “I’m sorry, Alexia. I didn’t think about it. I thought that you might like some coffee and pancakes.”

He held up a plate of blueberry pancakes and a cup of piping hot coffee. I tried to contain the drool as I walked over and took the coffee from him, downing half of it in one gulp. “Harper, I think this could be the beginning of a beautiful relationship.”

My humor was rewarded with a laugh as he handed me the pancakes and some syrup. I rolled my eyes and took them to the table and sat down, curling my legs underneath me and taking a bite.

It was then that I heard the laugh from Harper. I frowned and looked up, mouthful of food. “What?”

“Nothing, Alexia. Um, do you realize that you’re in your underwear?”

I looked down at my state of undress and nodded. “Yeah, so? This is my house. If you’re going to be a permanent guest around here, you need to realize that I’m stuck in my ways. I put clothes on for no guest.”

I tilted my head to the side, waiting for his response to that. It took him a minute, but he smiled and shook his head, grabbing his own plate and sitting at the table with me.

He scooped some into his mouth and swallowed it before answering me. “I plan on being a permanent guest, so I guess I’ll have to get used to seeing you running around half naked. Though I must say that the view isn’t all that bad.”

My mouth fell open and I tossed a piece of pancake at him. “Hey! I don’t think Cassi or Ian would be very happy with you commenting on the state of my body.” I smiled brightly and looked at him. “Though if you want to talk about a good view, you have pretty nice ass-ets.”

He blushed, fork on the way to his mouth. “You saw that?”

“Oh yeah. I must say, when you wear pants, you can’t really see how tight your derriere really is. I was pleasantly surprised.”

“Ok, Alexia, I get it. Can we please stop talking about my ass?”

I laughed, unable to help myself, and shrugged. “You started it.”

He shook his head and forked some more pancakes into his mouth. “You’re right. I’m sorry. I had no right.”

“Damn straight.” I smiled as I downed some more of my coffee. I was about to open my mouth to say more when the doorbell rang.

Frowning, I motioned for him to stay seated and grabbed my gun, walking toward the front door. “Who is it?”

There was a pause and then a voice that caused my heart to leap. “It’s me, Lexi.”

I lowered the gun and ran to the door, opening it to the sight of Ian. He looked as amazing as he always did in ripped jeans and a tank top. I threw my arms around his neck and kissed him without preamble.

He laughed as he pulled back from me, taking in my lack of dress. “I don’t know whether to be glad that you’re excited to see me, or upset that you’re answering the door in your underwear.”

I smiled and pulled him into the house, closing the door behind him. “You should be glad. And if it makes you feel better, I have my gun.”

I held the gun up to show him just as Harper came around the corner, plate and fork in his hands. “Who is it, Alexia?”

Ian looked between the two of us. Me in my underwear and Harper in his boxers and a T-shirt. He frowned and looked at me. “Am I missing something?”

“Not really. Harper stayed the night with Cassi. He made breakfast. Woke me with the smell of coffee. I, um, brandished a gun at him.” I shrugged and gestured toward the kitchen. “Breakfast?”

“Sorry, Ian. I would have called you to tell you that I was staying here, but, um, Cassi …” Harper blushed and Ian laughed, shaking his head.

“Don’t worry about it, Harper. I think I got it. And yes, breakfast would be wonderful. I don’t know why, but I woke up really hungry this morning.” He turned his eyes to me and I blushed a deep red.

Harper raised an eyebrow, but turned back into the kitchen to get Ian a plate. With him gone, Ian stepped into me and lifted my head, leaning down and kissing me hard.

He pulled back after a moment and smiled against my lips. “I love it when you blush. Makes me remember why I fell in love with you when we were kids.”

I pulled back and looked into his face, searching. “Only when we were kids?”

He smiled and leaned into me, brushing his lips against mine. “Maybe some of it still lingers.”

“Only some?” My voice was just above a whisper with his scent so close, overwhelming me. I hadn’t noticed just how strong it was when I had kissed him at the door. I hadn’t even noticed when we were alone the other night after the concert.

“No.” I took in a staggering breath as his lips met mine, tongue separating my lips.

I opened my mouth welcoming him and moved my arm around his neck. There was a sexual tension that hadn’t been present there before as he deepened the kiss.

I started to return the kiss and then heard the clatter of dishes in the living room, remembering Harper. Pulling back and stepped away from Ian. “Not now, Ian.”

He frowned but took my hand and led me into the kitchen. I sat at the table and he joined me, digging into the pancakes that Harper set in front of him.

I couldn’t put my finger on it, but something just didn’t seem right. Then it dawned on me. I had bitten him last night, mixing my blood and his. We were already compatible sexually, as most vampyres and Lycans are, but we had resisted. There was no resisting now.

I looked down, finally realizing my true lack of dress. I stood quickly and knocked the chair over, afraid of what would happen if I didn’t get clothes on soon. “I, um, I’ll be right back.”

I grabbed my gun and headed into my room, locking the door behind me. I paced up and down at the foot of the bed, trying to think how I could have been so stupid last night.

I took a deep breath and pulled my tank top over my head and moving to my closet. I grabbed the first leather body suit I could find and pulled it on, zipping it up and adding the black corset to it.

Grabbing my knee high boots, I pulled them on and stood in front of the mirror. My entire body was covered in black leather except for my head and hands. Pulling the shoulder holster on and adding their guns, I was ready to face anything, or almost anything. I took a deep breath and opened my bedroom door, walking into the kitchen.

Ian and Harper looked up as I walked into the room. Harper raised an eyebrow but turned back to the dishes. Ian’s face held disappointment and confusion.

“Well I should go get dressed and get out of here. I’ll be back before Cass gets up at sunset. Have a, um, good day, Alexia, Ian.” Harper finished up the dishes and walked toward Cassi’s room.

I turned to Ian as the door closed behind Harper and shrugged, grabbing Ian’s fork and taking a bite of his pancake. “They’re cute together.”

“Yeah, they are.” Ian took his fork back and took the now empty plate and put it in the sink. He kept his back to me, but spoke quietly. “Lexi?”

“Yes, Ian?”

“What’s wrong? Why did you put clothes on as soon as I tried to kiss you?” He turned to look at me and I saw the hurt in his eyes.

I sighed and stood, walking over to him. I raised my hand to touch his face and he flinched, so I pulled my hand back, hurt.

“It’s not because I don’t want you, Ian. Quite the contrary, I want you more than I can stand.” I paused as he looked up at me, slight smirk on his face. “But when I told you last night that I had been through something recently, I meant it. I, um, was …” I sat in a chair and wrapped my arms around myself. “I was raped the other night. The night before the concert.”

Ian stood there for a moment, unmoving. Before I could do anything, he was on his knees in front of me, arms wrapped around my waist. It was then that I realized I had been crying. I slid to the floor and let him wrap his arm around me as I cried.

I heard a door open and saw Harper walk into the room, uneasy. “Um, am I interrupting something?”

I pulled back from Ian and wiped at my eyes, shaking my head. “No, Harper. I was just … having a nervous breakdown.”

“Is there anything I can do?”

“I think I can handle it, Harper. Tell Matt and Gabe that I won’t be making it to dinner.” Ian turned back to me and stood, pulling me to my feet.

“OK, Ian. Take care of her. I’ll see you later, Alexia. I hope everything’s ok.” He waved and then was gone.

I heard the front door close and turned back to Ian, wrapping my arms around his waist. I just felt so safe with him.

“Lexi?”

“Yes.”

“I’m here for you to help you in any way I can.”

I smiled and kissed him on the neck gently, right over where I had bit him. “I know, Ian. Thanks.”

He shuddered as I kissed his neck and pulled away from me gently. “If you keep doing stuff like that, I might not be here just to help.”

I smiled and stood on tiptoes, kissing him gently on the lips. “OK, I’ll stop.”

At that moment, my cell phone rang. I grabbed it quickly. “Mooren.”

“Lex … need … elp … office … Mike … hurt.”

“Karma?” I knew it was here voice, but the words were cut off, like there was some kind of interference. “Karma, what’s going on? Are you ok?”

“Help, Lexi!” The phone went dead.

I walked quickly to my room and grabbed my bag of weapons, walking toward the door passed a very confused Ian.

He grabbed my arm and turned me to face him. “What’s going on, Lexi?”

“All Hell’s about to break loose.” I grabbed the shotgun out of the closet and cocked it, letting the sound reverberate throughout the room. “My partner and friends are in trouble. And I have to go help them.”

Ian nodded and opened the door. “We’re taking my car.” I frowned and shook my head, but he was already talking. “There’s no way I’m going to leave you alone to fight something. I’m here to help.”

At that moment, though I was scared for Mike and Karma, I was glad I had found a love that was as willing to throw himself into danger as I was. Now to just make it through the day so I can show him just how much I appreciated him.
