Chapter Eleven

Chapter 11

Raine and I ride down the trail on our horses. Artemis and Athena had told us to catch the silver fox and then take care of the hydra before they went to wherever they were going. We rode for a few minutes before I stopped and jumped off my horse to look at some tracks. I follow them a short way into the woods and find silver hair snagged on a low hanging branch. That was a lucky find. One thing the Amazons and Artemis did do right was the tracking training. I walk back out and tell Raine what I had found. That is when she hops off her horse and starts pulling things out of her saddlebag. She strolls into the woods and picks up a few things. Then she sits on the ground and begins fiddling with everything. I stand leaning against a tree watching her. I have no idea what she is doing???

“Alright, I’m finished.” She stands up with a strange contraption in her hands.

“What exactly did you just finish doing?” I look at her with a confused expression on my face.

“I made a trap that we can capture the silver fox in. All we have to do is set it up.” I give her a really odd look after that.

“Okaaay… Let’s make a little wager. If I can catch the fox before your contraption then I get to see you streak through Athena’s temple when we get through with this mission. If that’s good with you, what would you like to wager?” A shocked look graces her face when I mention what I want her to do if I win. She gets a dubious look on her face before she tells me her end of the wager.

“Fine it’s a wager. If I can catch the fox with my invention before you catch it, I want to see you give Athena a lap dance in front of Artemis.” She gives me a huge grin, and my smirk turns into a frown. Artemis will get me for this if I lose, but the trouble this could cause is what could make it fun.

“Alright, let’s get this little bet started.” I go off into the woods quickly following the tracks and small clues that are unnoticeable to most people. Small strands of hair are caught on branches and rough tree trunks. I follow the trail for an hour before I come upon a large cave. I climb up a tree and sit in a branch to observe the cave. I do not have to wait long because a few minutes later, a streak of silver darts its way into the cave. I’ve so got this bet in the bag. I quietly climb down from the tree and sneak up to the entrance of the cave. Sneaking into the back of the cave, I see a ball of silver fur peeking above a crevasse. I silently creep over to it, reach down, and snag the ball of fur. I pull it up and see I have the silver fox in my hands, but that’s when I feel hot breathing down my neck and see the crevasse move. I turn my head around and see a hydra staring straight at me. Oh shit! I take off running out of the cave with the silver fox in tow. I hear the hydra slithering and sliding along behind me. When I make it to the cover of the trees, I head straight towards where I know Raine will be. I can hear the hydra crashing through the forest behind me. It is huge. It is almost as tall as the treetops in the woods.

Soon, I can see Raine. She is giving me and odd look and I throw the fox at her, tell her to put it in the trap, and strap it to one of the horses. She catches it and does what I ask. I turn and see the green-purple part serpent coming straight for me. I bring out my two swords and get prepared. When it approaches me, it tries to snap its mouth around my body, but I roll forward and strike its chest with my sword. My sword glances off without leaving a scratch. I’m so screwed. I hear Raine approach as I dodge the hydra’s attacks to make my way beside her. “I thought we were fighting this after we found the fox.”

“We were supposed to, but turns out I found both of them in the same place.” We both jump to the side as the hydra tries to take a bite out of us. “Have any suggestions how to fight this thing. My sword just glanced off its scales.”

“Its weak point is its underbelly. Do not, I repeat… do not chop its head off.” Raine pulls out her bow and arrow and starts to distract the creature from me. I sneak around towards the back and start to come up beside the creature. Its tail swings around and knocks me off my feet. Its face turns and its beady eyes lock onto me lying on the ground, and the hydra bites down at me. I raise my sword up and it jams through the roof of the creatures mouth. Oh god, I think its breath may be the death of me. Strings of acid poison drop beside my head from the fangs. I can hear Raine running around but can not see what she is doing.

“Can we make whatever your going to do quick?” I yell. The hydra keeps pressing down driving itself more and more on my sword. By this point I have both of my hands on one sword trying to keep the hydras mouth from clamping down around me. Its tongue snakes around my leg and starts trying to pull me into its belly. It throws its head up into the air and starts slinging me around trying to dislodge my grip on the sword. I cling to the sword for dear life. Suddenly, the head drops slamming down onto the ground. I feel a fang go completely through my arm and wince at the burning sensation. I pull my arm free of the fang and crawl out of the slightly open mouth. I see that Raine had gotten her spear and drove it into the creatures underbelly while it was occupied with eating me. She had sliced and diced the hydra’s belly to pieces.

She rushes over to me, and I try to stand to meet her. Standing was not such a good idea, I fall into her arms. She lays me on the ground and gets a worried look on her face. “What’s wrong? We killed it, so it’s all good. Right?”

“You’re poisoned… I’ve got to get you back soon. Yeah, we did good though.” She picks me up and throws me onto the back of my horse and ties me to him. She hurriedly retrieves the weapons and the head of the hydra now it is dead. The silver fox is strapped onto the back of my horse with me. She goes to take my horses reigns, but he snaps at her.

“Kira, let her. She’s good. Okay?” She takes the reigns the second time and jumps onto her horse. We take off and build up to a gallop quickly.

“It’s a good thing one of Artemis’ temples is close.” Raine looks back and gives me a small smile. “Don’t worry, I’ll make sure everything comes out alright. It is a sight to see you covered in hydra slobber though.” A small laugh comes out of my mouth. That is the last thing I remember Raine saying as I go in and out of consciousness for the rest of the ride.

Artemis’ view

Athena and I were sitting in her bedroom chatting nonchalently when I heard Raine’s voice calling for me from my temple in the woods near Athens. It sounds urgent, so I ask Athena to join me considering Raine is her charge. We both appear at my temple seconds later. I was shocked by the sight that greeted me.

Raine had Faith in her arms. Faith was covered in a nasty slime and had a hole through her arm that was beginning to darken around the edges to a black color. She was unconscious, and I rushed over and took her out of Raine’s arms. “What happened!?” I look at Raine questioningly. Athena comes and stands beside me examining the hole in Faith’s arm.

“We caught the silver fox, but in finding the fox we also found the hydra. We fought and killed it, but Faith was hurt in the doing of it.” Raine’s eyes look down at the floor.

Athena looks at me and says, “We need to treat this quickly. She has hydra poison in her, and you know how dangerous that is. I’m surprised she’s alive right now. I’ll be back in a second sister. I have an antidote at my home.” She disappears and reappears in less than a minute. She holds a vial in her hand and pours the solution over the wound. She stops, tilts Faith’s head, and carefully gets her to swallow the rest. Before our eyes, Faith’s wound starts to heal, the skin grows back, and the blackness that was forming disappears. Raine’s eyes widen as she watches what happens. “Raine.” She glances up as soon as Athena mentions her name. “Go and fetch whatever else you need to give us off the horses, which I see you’ve ridden into the temple.” Raine goes and unties a large bag that has blood dripping from it and places it at Athena’s feet. Then she goes and fetches a strange contraption that looks almost like a cage off the back of Faith’s horse. It contains the silver fox, and she places that container at my feet. “This bag contains the head of the hydra?”

“Yes, it does.”

“Good. I’m going to need it to make more antidote after this.” Faith stirs and I glance down at her. She opens her eyes, looks up into mine and smiles.

“We got the fox and killed the hydra, and I don‘t think I got hurt to bad.” Faith gives a smile as she says this.

“You didn‘t get hurt to bad! You call this not to bad!!! That‘s the first thing you say to me when you wake up! Oh my god! Faith… What am I going to do with you?” I try to give her a harsh look, but I can not keep it up for long.

“I… uh… I love you.” I can not stay mad at her for any long amount of time.

“I love you too. I would kiss you, but you really stink and need a bath.” She laughs. I look around the temple and see the temple keepers and priestesses somewhat shocked at the scene they see before them. “Get back to your work people.” I turn and look at Athena. “So sister, are you ready to go back up to Olympus?”

“Yes, Raine needs a bath to. She has green gunk on her.” Rain looks down at her clothes.

“It’s not my fault I had to maul a hydra’s stomach to kill it. You can’t expect me to stay clean after that.” She crosses her arms and looks up at Athena. The companionship between the two makes me smile. Athena and I grab what’s needed, and tell my priestesses to take care of the horses. We disappear back off to Olympus to prepare the two for their next mission.
