Chapter 12

Chapter 12: A baby?!?

"Serpia, you're pregnant."

It was 2 weeks after the ceremony and I finally had gone to see the doctor because I was getting nauseated.

"WHAT????!!!!!!!!"

"Yeah... kinda a bit of a shock eh?"

"Yeah, kinda."

I shot the smart-ass doctor a look of loathing.

"Are you absolutely sure?"

"99 % sure. You have all the classic symptoms. We can't be sure for several more weeks though... come back then."

It was hard hiding it from Seth, but I didn't want to get his hopes up, just in case. However the morning sickness continued and 3 weeks later I went back to the doctor, who did a test. It came up positive. I promptly left the room, tearing through the door and landing right into the arms of my mate.

"Whoa. Slow down big trucker. What's going on?"

"I'm... uh... I'm pregnant."

"Oh. That's good. You can't die from pregn... WHAT?! Are you sure?? Really? What're we going to name it? Is it a boy or a girl? Where will it sleep? We need a place of our own. How are we going to tell the others? Really?"

He said this all really, really fast. I snuggled up to him and muttered "really" into his neck. He kissed my fore head and we headed for home.

Months passed as I grew and grew and grew. I was entering my last couple of months of pregnancy when it happened. Chira had been one of my own palace servants. I'd known for a long time that she'd had her eyes set on Seth, but I trusted my mate and knew he'd never submit to the likes of her. One day she did the unthinkable. I was walking to Hydra's room to have lunch with her when Chira jumped out at me. I, being the fighter I was, had just enough reflex to guard myself against her. I elbowed her in the face just as I saw something glinting in her hand. It raced towards my stomach and I wasn't able to get out of the way in time. I felt the blade sink into my fleshy womb. My blood began to pour out. I looked up at Chira as I fell to my knees. She grinned an evil grin. Then I saw Seth. He was running full-speed towards me. He let out a mighty roar and blasted Chira out of the way. She died instantly. Seth rushed to my side and lifted my head.

"Hold on Serpia... hold on."

I blacked out.

When I woke later in the hospital Seth was at my side. He was happy for a minute when I woke, but his face fell when I asked about the child.

"I... I'm sorry, Serpia. It didn't make it."

I left the hospital a day later. I went home and began to burn all the furniture I'd picked for the child, twig by twig. Seth said I was being a bit obsessive. I ignored Seth for several days. Didn't he understand? I had lost my child! It was my fault. I should have dealt with Chira long before it got out of hand. I knew, and did nothing to stop her. My own stupidity had cost me my child. He would never understand. To him, it was just an object, one we could make more of...
