The Loss of a Friend

Hi all I'm back once more to bring you the next chapter. Oh, and a major blood and gore scene.... I think, no one will tell me.

Chapter 12

Layla watched as Mevran tended to the young half-elf. Whenever she would ask the elf if Lanton would make it, he would always say he wasn't sure yet. This went on for nearly a full day, before Mevran finally pulled away.

"He will be weak, and we wont be able to move him for at least a week but he will live," sighed Mevran, tiredly. He looked at the young girl for the first time to find she had fallen asleep waiting to find out if Lanton would be ok. He sighed again then, and turned his attention back to the young half-elf. He gently brushed hair away from Lanton's face, "You gave me quite a scare back there, my friend. I hope we will have no repeats of this event in the near future," with that said the older elf curled up next to his charge and fell into a deep and dreamless sleep.

Over the next week, Lanton woke and proved that the poison had not effected him as badly as it could've. He had a few muscle spasms put those ended near the middle of the week, so that by the end of the week, he no longer showed signs of ever being poisoned at all.

Everything was going great and then the fateful day came. It was layla's turn to gather the water and food for the next two days, but sadly she would not return.

It took four hours of searching for the young human, before Lanton and Mevran came across her mangled body. Neither could determine what had done so much damage to the young girl. Only that whatever it was, be it man or beast, it had made short work of tearing her limb from limb. The strange thing was the only thing that seemed to have been eaten were her heart, liver, lungs and bladder. The intestines were strewn about the young girl's body, as if they were coils of wet slippery snakes.

The two buried her remains quickly, unable to leave there small companion for the birds and animals to eat. They stayed for two days at the grave grieving and giving her elven funeral rights, since they did not know the customs of men.

They left on the third day without a word to each other. That went on for four days, before finally Lanton broke the silence.

"What do you think killed her, Mevran?"

"I don't know, my friend, whatever it was, did not have a heart that's all I can say on the matter. I fear the worst but I do not wish you to fear what may only be my imagination." Mevran said, solemnly.

"You think it was the werewolves don't you?" Lanton smiled grimly at the elf's shock, "You didn't have to say anything, Mevran, I've been with you long enough to know what to look for, and werewolves are the only thing that eats only those specific organs while the victim still lives, everyone knows that."

"Paw, werewolves are just a myth, that is also known, young half-elf," retorted the elf.

"Yes, and that's what the humans said about elves," returned Lanton before speeding up his walk, wanting to be as far from the grave as possible, for that night was a full moon.
