Chapter Twelve
It wasn’t until a week later, when Anya was having lunch with her older sister that she really had the time to stop and think about her relationship with Adrian.
“I don’t know what to think about anything right now.” Anya took a sip of her coffee and paused for a moment. “We’ve spent just about every day together, at least for a few hours, and we haven’t talked about our relationship.”
“You haven’t talked about it? What does that mean, how do you have sex with your best friend and then not talk about it afterward?” Lily Rosario asked skeptically. When Anya had casually mentioned this development over the phone, Lily immediately called an emergency lunch meeting.
“Well, you know how I am Lily, I hate talking about anything potentially awkward. And, if I being completely honest, we haven’t even really done anything but have sex.” Anya blushed.
Lily arched one of her perfectly shaped eyebrows. “For a week straight, the two of you have been having sex? So, it must be good sex, right?”
“Yeah…” Anya said quietyly, wondering if the elderly couple not too far away could hear any of their conversation.
“Jesus Anya, you’ve been having good sex for a week straight. So, um, what exactly is your problem?” Lily laughed at her sister’s disgruntled face. “Well what do you want me to say? You, obviously, need to talk to him about all of this. I know you’re not the type of person to just have sex with someone, do you want to be in a relationship with him?”
“It’s weird, I always thought that Adrian would be the perfect boyfriend. I mean, I always, always thought that, but even when people would say that they thought we should be together, I never really thought it was a possibility. I guess I couldn’t see it happening but now… now that, in a way, it is happening, I’m not sure it’s a good idea. What happens when we break up?” Anya was shocked at her own concerns, having never voiced them before.
“Anya, listen to yourself. You’re already worried about breaking up and you’re not even together yet. You always do this. Stop, relax, and live in the moment. Adrian is everything you have ever wanted in a guy. You just said you thought he would be the perfect boyfriend.” Lily rolled her eyes in exasperation. “You need to tell Adrian how you feel and sort all of this out.”
“I know, I know.” Anya groaned. “I’m just dreading it. It’ll be so awkward.”
“Oh God Anya, grow up!” Lily laughed. “If having sex wasn’t awkward, then talking to him shouldn’t be awkward either. And if you don’t believe me, you could always ask Talan what he thinks.”
“Uh no thanks. I’m pretty sure asking our brother about my sex life is about as awkward as it gets. I’d rather ask Mom than talk to Talan about it. Oh, God…” Anya imagined the scene in her mind. “Gross.”
“Speaking of which though, have you told anyone about it?” Lily asked.
“Well, ok, so this is really embarrassing but I’m sure you’ll find it hilarious.” Anya took a deep breath. “So the morning we first slept together, I guess we were kind of loud because Carter and Lucas both heard us. Carter even banged on the wall. I swear to God, I wanted to die. They’ve both been making fun of us constantly, so we’ve been at my place a lot, I guess. And Kendra knows about it, she’s happy for us, but other than that, no one knows.”
“Well, Mom will be thrilled to hear that you’ve moved on from Bryan.” Lily shrugged. “I suggest you wait until she’s on your case about something and then tell her you and Adrian are together, she’ll be so happy she won’t even remember why she was so worked up in the first place.”
“Oh, trust me, I’ve already thought about it.” Anya laughed with her sister.
*
Adrian had come over while Anya was in the middle of editing a packet of reader’s questions.
Adrian examined Anya’s outfit when she opened the door. She clearly hadn’t been expecting company- dressed in a tank top and what had to be her tiniest pair of short (and no underwear…he suspected), Anya looked deceptively relaxed.
“You’re allowed to stay, but on one condition.” Anya told him, pushing her glasses up her nose.
“Sure, what’s the condition?”
“You have to stay out of the kitchen and away from me until I finish my work.” When he started to protest Anya raised her hand to stop him. “Seriously, I can’t have any distractions right now. I need to focus on my work.”
“Fine, fine.” Adrian pouted. “I’ll just sit over there and read the newspaper. I’ll even turn the pages quietly, you won’t even know that I’m here.”
“Doubtful.” Anya said eyeing him. She quickly returned to her seat at the kitchen counter, not wanting to engage in conversation any longer than necessary, knowing it would only distract her from her mission. Right… missions…. “Hey Dre?”
“Shh. You’re supposed to be working.” Adrian reminded her from his spot across the room.
“We need to talk when I’m done working.” Anya glanced at him over her shoulder.
“Then be quiet Anya, you’re distracting me from my paper.” Adrian said with a grin. Anya sighed, knowing that he had misunderstood her and that she purposefully hadn’t clarified herself.
After a half an hour Adrian was bored and feeling restless. He couldn’t find anything in the newspaper that could capture his attention- at least not as completely as Anya had. Sitting silently, typing away on her laptop, Anya seemed entirely oblivious to his presence and yet she was testing the very last of his patience. The way she kept stretching…. And playing with her hair…. And biting her bottom lip… she had to be doing this on purpose. She had to know that he was watching her, no, starring intensely at her. He’d been thinking about her all day and now she was just teasing him; it was cruel.
“Dre, what’s the matter?” Anya turned around to look at him. He was utterly pathetic, draped over the couch looking like he had lost his only friend.
“Nothing.” Adrian shrugged.
“You keep sighing, are you sure nothing’s wrong?” Anya asked again, already having a good idea of what was bothering him.
“Nope, what could be wrong?” Sighing again, Adrian stood up. “I’m gonna take a nap in your room, okay?”
“Fine baby, I promise I’m almost done.” Adrian only nodded, still looking dejected. Anya bit her lip to keep from laughing. She was pretty sure she’d just gotten a glimpse of what he was like as a child.
