School Days

Chapter 11
School Days

The next month seem to fly by and all too soon it was time for me to start school, I had packed my trunk the night before and put misty into her carrier. Breakfast was rushed that morning, as the ship would be leaving at 11am.

Once everything was ready granddad and I climbed into the taxi that waited for us outside the cabin and headed to the docks, I would be starting at Xavier, the most elite school for magi in all of Ireland. It was on a secluded island off the coast, so the only way to get there was by ship.

Once we arrived at the docks granddad handed me my ticket and then helped me give my trunk to the crew. I hugged my grandfather goodbye and picked up misty’s carrier; then headed up onto the ship, once aboard I handed the usher my ticket then headed to a secluded cabin.

I didn’t feel like sitting with anyone, considering the fact of what I am, sighing I let misty out of her carrier and stared out of the window. Misty curled up on my lap and fell asleep purring; I scratched her on the head and continued to watch the sea.

The ship left the dock with a jerk and I almost ended up face first on the floor, once the journey started the ship moved relatively smooth. After only a few minutes a boy with shoulder length black hair came in and asked me if he could sit with me, I motion for him to sit and looked back out of the window.

“My name is Jacob Lightstar, who are you” I looked at him “ my name is Nathan Wolfkin” I replied; Jacob smiled at me, it was the first time anyone was nice to me and how come he look so familiar?

I asked him “Do I know you, you look very familiar to me” I could tell there was a twinkle in his eyes “I helped you when you were younger” he said with a big grin on his face. It was, he was the boy that helped me the day I found my grandfather.

I thanked him for helping me that day and knew then and there that I had found a friend. We talked about the things that happened to us after we first met, I found out that Jacob’s father was a powerful man within the Magic Regulation Guild.

I told Jacob about how my grandfather took care of me and was a very rich mage, but he liked to live in a small home by himself. We continued to talk for the rest of the trip and became even closer friends; it took the ship 5 hours to reach the island.

By the time we arrived the moon was in the sky and the sun was gone, a man standing on the docks and ushered us into the carriages that would take us to the castle. Once Jacob and I were in a carriage, we waited for the rest of the students to load into the other ones. In our carriage there was a boy with short light brown hair and another boy with medium length blond hair.

We sat in silence as the carriages headed towards the castle, it took only a few minutes before we reached the entry way. Once out of the carriages Jacob, I, and the rest of the new students climbed the stairs the main entrance. The main doors were incredible beside both of the doors there was a dragon statues, both of the magnificent statues stood like two sentinels guarding a fortress, both of the dragons held swords bearing the crest of the school under their claws.

We stood there in awe at the magnificent sight before us; our revelry soon ended when a tall mage in blue and gold robes cleared his throat, the mage signaled for us to follow him into the castle. I could feel the tension in the air, the students around Jacob and I was; shaking from nerves. Not to say that I was brave; because I was shaking along with them, we were ushered into the dinning hall were we stood before the teacher’s table.

The headmistress stood before us, she was a tall and slender mage; her long blue and gold robes flowed around her like the waves of the ocean. I sighed knowing that I would never be like them, I would never be normal.

One of the teachers entered the hall carrying what looked like an old brown wooden box; out of the box was took a medallion with the school crest on it. The head mistress had us line up and placed the medal around our necks one at a time, the first student had the medal glow red, the next had it glow blue, then purple, then green, then again blue and so on.

The teacher holding the medal approached Jacob, the medal was placed around his neck and it glowed purple. I was shaking as the medal slipped around my neck, I prayed that it would be the same as Jacob; I didn’t want to be separated from my only friend.

I let out a great sigh of relief as the medallion glowed purple for me as well, Jacob led me over to the purple corner of the dinning hall were we took our seats. I was grateful that Jacob and I would not be separated from each other, I could not bare being around people I didn’t know.

The welcoming dinner went very well, I ate more that night then I had in my whole life, my stomach was swelled full of food by the time we had to leave for our new home in the Manticore dorm. A older student led us up to the dorm, it was up about 7 floors from the dinning hall; when we arrived I was out of breath and thought I might pass out from the lack of energy.

When we approached the door to the Manticore dorm there was the symbol of the dorm engraved on the door, it was not as spectacular as the entrance but pretty cool nun the less.

We entered the lounge room and were took on a little tour of the dorm, from the lounge the rooms were to the right and the bathroom & shower room was to the left. Jacob and I looked on the room assignments on the bulletin board in the lounge; Jacob told me that he and I would be in the same room. I was surprised when the same students I saw in the carriage with me and Jacob would be sharing the room with us.

We walked silently to our new home for the next 4 years; sure I would get to see granddad during the summer and winter holidays, but it wouldn’t be the same without him here with me. I was given the bed farthest from the door and started to unpack my things, I put my robes and school supplies in the locker and placed the picture of granddad and I gently on the bed side table.

I could hear Misty meowing indignitly in her carrier, you could almost hear her screaming to be let out, with a sigh I picked up the carrier; set it on my bed and let Misty out. Once Misty was liberated from her prison she glared at me then curled up and fell asleep (stupid cat) I mumbled in my head, no point in saying it out loud, like anyone would care.

Once everything had been stored in it’s place, I headed with Jacob to the Meeting room. It was a small room just off the hall next to the Lounge room. The head of the dorm introduced himself and told us if we had and concerns to come to him, the discussion went on for a couple of hours but I just tuned him out until it was over.

By the time the meeting had ended it was late so I just headed to bed, the nightmare returned that night and I woke up sobbing. But instead of seeing my grandfather, Jacob was standing there with a very concerned look on his face. As the tears fell from my eyes Jacob crawled into bed with me and held me through the night.
