Candyland- Chapter 12
Jessica awoke late, stretching and yawning and feeling more refreshed than she had thought possible. Turning over to get off the bed, she came face to face with George and let out a small yelp of fright. He shushed her and she pushed him away from her, confused as to why he was there, sleeping in the same bed as her. George spoke first, however, “I’m sorry to startle you; I had moved you from the chair to the bed and was watching you sleep when I must have drifted off myself. You were just so beautiful and angelic that I had to watch you.”
Jessica met his gaze and studied him, trying to figure out if there was anything else meant by what he had said. She had never been smart when it came to reading between the lines of conversation. Finally satisfied, she got up and busied herself by straightening up the already tidy room. She specifically ignored George to get him to leave the room quietly. When he didn’t, she became even more flustered and accidentally dropped a vase full of roses on one of the end tables. George got off the bed and attempted to help her pick up the shards. He settled on fetching the trash basket and placing it where it would be easily accessible from where Jessica was kneeling.
Silence stretched on and on in the room while Jessica cleaned up the mess she had made, and George stood behind her, waiting for the moment to speak. At last, when it was too much to bear, he blurted out what he had been meaning to tell her, “I don’t think you’re damaged property, you know.”
Jessica’s small frame froze in mid action as she thought about what he had just said. The reminder of what had happened only the night before brought fresh tears to her eyes and she started to shake from the memory of it. She dropped the glass she had been holding into the pile in front of her and wiped her eyes with the back of her hand.
“I don’t think you deserved what they did to you, either,” George continued.
Her silent sobs wracked her body uncontrollably and she surrendered to the tide, finally letting out a huge cry. She spun around and buried her face into George’s jeans, gripping the side seams like they were the only things keeping her on the ground. Slowly he stroked her hair, murmuring to her and telling her how it wasn’t her fault, how she was still beautiful, how they would never touch her again, how he would always protect her, and slowly she calmed down. When he felt that it was alright to pull away from her grasp, he did so and knelt in front of her to better put his arms around her. Her sobs were muffled by the fabric on his shoulder, but he persisted with murmurs and kisses all over anything he could reach in that position, and finally they subsided. Blinking suddenly clear eyes she looked into him so far she reached his soul. It was so moving to her to witness such openness that the tears came back.
“Now, now,” said George. “We just finished all of that, didn’t we?” He wiped away a lone tear that dared to crawl down her cheek. Jessica nodded and he nodded sharply in response. “No more tears for today. You’ve had enough tears for a very long time. Plus, it mars your beautiful complexion.”
Jessica looked at him strangely at having used words she didn’t understand, but she got the gist of it from his tone. Smiling now, she got up off of the floor and finished picking up the shards of the vase. George assisted with the flowers, and soon the mess was cleaned and mopped up. It seemed that the tears had dissipated whatever temporary anger Jessica was holding within her and there was now room for the happier child that he knew.
Leaving her to unpack, George left the room and sought out Shannon. She had finally finished arranging furniture and was now curled on her bed with a book in her hand. Though she was disappointed that the little suite was not equipped with cable television, she was happy that she would have an excuse to catch up on her reading.
Shannon merely raised her eyes in greeting as he stepped in the room and shut the door behind him. Ignoring his presence she continued to read as if it were the most important thing in the world. In actuality, the most important thing to her was letting George know how much of an inconvenience being moved into this little place was. And though he knew it already, she was of the mind that he could definitely use some reminding.
“I see you’ve gotten yourself quite comfortable here in the few hours it’s been,” he started, causing her to grace him with a glance and a roll of her eyes. “I’m glad to see you’re so adaptable.” This provoked a sigh.
“Look,” she finally said, “I know what you did was in my best interests and Jessica’s, and I know you were just trying to look out for us. This is definitely the right thing to do as far as she’s concerned, but I have a rep to think about. And it would have been nice if you consulted me about this first, rather than uprooting me and sending me off to destination unknown.”
George nodded. “I realize that the manner in which I requested you to come here was less than pleasant—.”
“No,” she interrupted, “it wasn’t ‘unpleasant’ as you put it, it was rude and demeaning.”
“Would it make you feel any better if I told you that I made a split second decision and I did the first thing I could think of to get Jessica out of that place and make sure she’s safe in the future?”
“Just try to respect that, while you may observe what happens in the compound, I’m the one who lives it every day. And while you may think you know everything that goes on in there, that’s the furthest thing from the truth. There’s a reason why I’m known as ‘The Queen’ amongst the children there.”
George sat on the edge of the bed and put his hand on her hip, trying to display openness in his posture. “Will you forgive me?” he asked.
“What else is there to do?” she asked back, with a smirk. “Holding anger towards you inside will only hurt me in the end. I found that out the hard way.”
He didn’t know how to respond to such a biting remark, so he stuck with silence, reading her body language to better understand how the comment was meant to be taken. When all Shannon did was grin at him, he relaxed a little bit and stretched out on her bed. She flopped over and sat next to him, resting her hands on his stomach. Reaching his hand over to take hers in it, he began to stroke her fingers and then pulled her down for a kiss on the lips.
The kiss quickly began to escalate and the both found themselves groping at each other almost frantically, both for completely different reasons. Distractedly, George pulled away from Shannon, suddenly and swiftly enough to send alarms going off in her head. He got up and strode to the doorway, turning only to ask a single question, “You’ll take care of her for me, won’t you?”
Shannon didn’t reply, only stared after him when he left, not even moving when she heard the distinctive click of the outside door. She felt used. She realized the irony of such a statement after she thought it and chuckled to herself before she realized that she wanted to savor the outrage of the situation before her. Honestly she didn’t know what she felt more put out about, the fact that George was ignoring her for some tiny little girl with no experience and with innocence by the pound, or that he had successfully saddled her with said little girl for who knew how long. She was his favorite, the one he always came back to, the one he had shared himself with. Before she hadn’t been threatened by the other children, they had only one thing in common: they were all different. She believed, though, that it was her consistency that he was so drawn to. Why else would he come back? She remained unchanged by the new children, while he immersed himself in them. She had always assumed that it was the breaking he liked most, but with Jessica it was completely different.
Jessica was a threat to her, in the purest sense of the word. She knew that he didn’t give all his attention to this newest attraction to hurt Shannon in any way, but that thought didn’t stop his actions from hurting her any less. In fact, the fact that he had no idea how much his newly diverted attention was affecting her the more it hurt her, it meant that he wasn’t as in tune to her feelings as she had previously thought. Jessica was a cute as a button and she had absolutely no idea how tightly George’s feelings were wrapped around her short little finger.
A sharp knock sounded on the doorjamb and it snatched Shannon out of her thoughts. There, outlined by the door frame stood her recently recognized nemesis. “There’s not that much to do in here so I just wanted to come by and see if you wanted any company or anything,” Jessica said, her words penetrating Shannon’s once safe sanctuary. “I know how boring things can get sometimes when you haven’t got anything to do.”
Shannon simply stared at her, neither inviting her in nor wishing her away. She wasn’t yet prepared for a confrontation, and she knew she couldn’t deal with Jessica’s “sweet-as-sugar” mentality. “Well, you might as well come on in if you’re going to just stand there,” she said to Jessica finally.
Jessica scurried onto the bed next to her and started chattering aimlessly about nothing. She nodded her head and made “mm-hmm” sounds in response, but otherwise completely tuned her out. After a while of this Jessica started to get the picture that she was the only one having this conversation and scurried off again, back to her own room.
As soon as she was gone, Shannon flopped down on the bed and closed her eyes, rubbing her temples furiously in an effort to think as quickly as she could. What could she do to make Jessica less of a threat to her? What was it George liked the most about her? What was it she could exploit to get back into his heart again? And then, almost instantly, she knew exactly what she could use against Jessica. It was so perfect she couldn’t believe she hadn’t thought of it before. At least she knew she would have fun doing this, and so, probably, would Jessica.
