Chapter 12 - A Reunion
I woke up to the phone ringing and Loni answering it.
“You have reached Wintersline!” He said in an announcer’s voice.
“Press or say One now, if you are the design firm, calling Alexia in on the weekend!” He paused.
“Press or say Two now, if you are one of Alexia’s friends, calling to wake him up from his hangover sleep. Press or say Three now, if you’re the police, calling to get back on the case of his missing masculinity!” I opened my eyes and glared at him and he waved with a cheesy grin before continuing. “Press or say Four now, if you are a vindictive ex girlfriend looking for money, jewelry, child support, or a quick lay.” I said “Fat chance on that one.”
“Press or say Five now, if none of these apply to you.” He cupped his hand to the reciever. “Someone saying it’s your mother. Elouise or something.”
“Give phone.” I said groggily. He handed me the phone and I muttered a hello.
“Alexia? Alexia Winters?”
“Yes, this is he.”
“Oh! Wow, thank god I’ve finally reached you! This is Elise, I don’t know if you remember me.”
“I certainly do. The one with the beautiful hair and the leather.”
“Yes. Wow, you do remember me. Well, I suppose you’re wondering how I got your phone number.”
“Frank gave it to you, right?”
“How did you guess?”
“He’s the only one that is a mutual contact. Are you still in Chicago?” I pretended to not know about her having a job on the south side of town.
“No, I’m in DC, visiting my sister. Which is exactly why I called. You were memorable. Something about a note in a shoe.”
“Ah yes. Before you ask, I was just fucking around with you on that. I figure that you still are worried about that.”
“Actually, I had no worries. After thinking it over, I knew you couldn’t possibly be that guy. Well, anyway, speaking of that night, You wouldn’t happen to still have all those other things you bought for me, would you?”
“You want them back for a job or something? Strange outfit for a nurse, I say.” I smiled and laid on my back as Loni made gross faces at my side.
“Actually, Yes. I’ve quit my job at the hospital in Chicago, and moved closer to my family. You really made an impact on me.”
“You were just denying what was a part of you. You enjoyed yourself for the first time, and I certainly didn’t hate it, either.” She laughed. Her laughter gave me a feeling of peace.
“So, um,” she started. I knew she was going to ask about my availability, “You wouldn’t happen to have some time to go to dinner, would you?”
“Oh, I’m sorry, I’m pretty swamped right now, my friends and I are working on a project, and my roomate and I were planning on going bar-hopping tonight.”
“That sounds great! Maybe I could get one of my friends in on it, and it could be a double date, I know that my friend Lisa needs to get out of of the house…”
“Oh, that won’t work, You see, my roomate is gay.”
“Oh gosh! Sorry, I didn’t know, I guess that won’t work, then.”
“No worries, you wouldn’t know unless you were told.” I sighed and rolled my eyes, knowing I had to see her in any case. “So, I suppose the only good plan would be a late lunch today. You pick the place, I’ll bring the stuff, and you and I can do some catching up.” Loni scowled and threatened me playfully with his fist.
“That sounds great! I know a nice place on P street, a café. You like coffee, yes?”
“Of course. Does two pm sound feasable?”
“Yes. I will see you then.”
“Alright. Well, then, I shall take my leave and try to alleviate this hangover before we meet. It has been good catching up, ‘Lise.”
“Indeed it has. Goodbye.”
I hung up and Loni gaped. “So you’re actually going to see her? Are you sure that’s such a good idea? She knows, and could be setting you up!” I shook my head.
“She admires me, Loni. I did her a favor, and changed her life for the better. You should be more trusting.” I said as I bopped his head with the phone. I sat up and stretched “It’ll be an hour, tops. She’ll probably ask if I’m single and all that regular shit. I don’t know, I’ve never had to deal with an Ex before.
“She was a one night stand that happened to have your number. I wouldn’t exactly call her an ex.”
“Well, it is strange that the only woman to survive me called almost a year after never seeing me again.”
“Yeah, that is strange. That’s what I was saying. It could be a trap set by police.”
“I doubt it. It’s still in our precinct, Frank wouldn’t betray me like that.” I grinned and stood up. “Well, time for me to find that outfit I bought for her. You haven’t seen crotchless leather panties laying around, have you?”
“No, I haven’t. Ew, Leather panties? Those have to give the worst wedgies imaginable”
“I wouldn’t know, she wore them, not me.” And then I went rummaging rummaging around for them.
I sat on the deck of the café with the gifts I had given her wrapped nicely in tissue paper, in the bag they came in when they were first bought. I had finished my second mocha, and was on my third when she walked up to me. “You haven’t changed a bit!” she exclaimed.
“You haven’t seen all of me. Hello ‘Lise.”
“Hello, Alexia.” She gave me a hug. I patted her back and kissed her cheek. I handed her the bag. “These are yours, I believe.”
“You still had them laying around after all this time?”
“Yes. I keep the strangest things, my house is filled with boxes and bags of stuff.” I took a drink of the mocha. I smiled a bit, feeling awkward, but played it off as too much caffiene. “You look beautiful, ‘Lise. Just as I remembered, only you’ve changed your hair.”
“Yeah, I thought it suited me better.”
“Red is a very striking color for your skintone. You stand out like the rose I knew you were, now.” I slid back in my chair.
“So, I was wondering, why me?”
“Hmm?”
“Why, that night, did you choose me? You could have easily had any woman in that room, but you chose me.”
“Well, as I recall, you were trying to escape the cage you put yourself in. Your fiance was a dick, and you were the only one with potential. I try to help the people I pick up, and if they don’t like it, they’re worse off because of it.” I shrugged.
“That doesn’t help me not believe the card you left in my boot.”
“And if I was?”
“Then I’m a very lucky individual indeed.”
“That you are, regardless of if what I wrote was true, dear ‘Lise.” I took a drink of my mocha. She smiled shyly.
“So, what are you doing nowadays? Is what Frank told me true? That you’re working in the south side of town as a…”
“Dominatrix’s assistant? Yes. The benefits are incredible, you should come see me one day.”
“That’d be too much for me, I prefer to be on this side of the whip.” I grinned. She blushed. So she remembered what I had done with the whip.
“Well, you don’t have to come for a session, you could sit in one, if you wanted.”
“Like I said, it’d be too much for me. Anyway, I’m a bit preoccupied with other things.”
“Yes, that reminds me, you talked about your friends and roomate, but never said anything about a girlfriend. Does that mean you’re single?”
“I don’t have a girlfriend.” I took a drink. She sipped her coffee.
“Well, that isn’t odd for you, I suppose. You did say you were the constant bachelor. So, how does a date between the two of us sound?”
“Horrible. I would prefer if we just stayed as cheery aquaintances. Nothing personal, ‘Lise, I just can’t be bothered with the dating scene right now.”
“Oh?”
“Well, like I said, I’ve changed a bit. I’ve got obligations which interfere with plans for a girlfriend. And in the meanwhile, I’m sure that your Domme wouldn’t be happy to find you dating your old flame.”
“I suppose. She and I are a bit more than friends or co-workers, in a way.” She smiled sheepishly.
“So I see that I’m not the only one who’s broadened their horizons.” I muttered into my cup.
“Hm?” she questioned.
“Oh, nothing, it’s just that I am amused to see you’ve broadened your horizons.”
“It’s nothing like that, let me assure you. It’s just a happy coincidence. She’s really not that feminine, and it’s a good change of pace for me.”
“I understand more than you know.” I looked at my watch.
“You’re anxious to leave. I shouldn’t keep you.”
“No, Not just yet, I will have to go soon, however. Here, let me have your number, I’ll be more than happy to hear from you on occasion, we can perhaps go to a club one night with a group of friends, if you’re into that sort of thing.”
“What, like a night club? Music and everything? I would be delighted!” and she pulled out a scrap of paper and a pen, writing down her number and handing it to me. I put it in my wallet.
“I will call you when we get a gig set up, my friends and I. We’re more than happy to see familiar faces at our shows.”
“Oh, you’re in a band?”
“Mm. We just got back together last night after our drummer got released from jail for something he didn’t commit.”
“Oh my, it seems that your life is more turmultuous than it seemed.”
“Good word. And yes, it is. Well, my fair lady of the budding rose, I must go. It has been nice to see you once more. I will be hearing from you eventually, if you don’t hear from me first. I’ve got things to attend to at home.” I stood up and she stood up to hug me again. I hugged back and kissed her cheek once more before leaving.
When I got home, Loni was playing a game on the console. I sat down and shivered.
“That doesn’t sound good.” Said Loni. “So you didn’t get busted, and she didn’t die I take it.”
“Well, if there’s anything to say for me, it’s that the old saying ‘what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger’ applies in her case.”
“Good one. So, what went on?”
“Not much, we talked about her personal life, and she asked me about my relationship status.”
“You’re taken.”
“I don’t have a girlfriend and don’t need one.” I smiled a bit.
“You skirted around the subject. You’re still afraid to admit it, aren’t you?”
“Admit what?”
“That you’re gay as an Easter parade.”
“Shut up, Loni, You’re an exception to the rule.”
“Sure I am.”
“You have reached Wintersline!” He said in an announcer’s voice.
“Press or say One now, if you are the design firm, calling Alexia in on the weekend!” He paused.
