Grateful & Confused
“Hey Jett. You going to the beach,” Will asked. He was sitting at the kitchen table reading his paper and drinking coffee. “It’ eight thirty on a Wednesday and you’radedaded to the beach?” Jett joined his uncle in the kitchen.
“Nessie goes home next Thursday and we’re trying to spend every moment together. And yes, we’re going to the beach today.”
“You two are getting pretty close, huh,” Will asked, raising an eyebrow.
“Yea, we are,” Jett said, remembering the day before. “I’m gonna get going Uncle Will. We want to get an early start.”
“Okay, have fun.”

“Grandma, me and Jett are going to the beach so I’ll call you every couple of hours,” Janese said. She slipped a matching tropical shawl on her waist. She didn’t want to reveal that much, although she had on a bikini.
“Okay, I’ll see you when you get back,” Grandma Aultmon said. Janese slipped her blue sandals on, grabbed her beach bag, and walked on the porch to wait for Jett. He pulled up after a couple of minutes. He hopped out the car and Janese met him.
“Hey lady, he said, swooping her in his arms and adding a light kiss. “You look sexy in that bathing suit.”
“Hey boo,” Janese greeted back. “Thank you. Ready to go?” Jett opened the passenger side and Janese climbed in the car. The ride to the beach house was silent except for the radio. Jett parked in front of the house and they walked hand in hand to the shore. Jett spread a towel and they sat down. Both were hesitant to start speaking first so Jett went on ahead.
“How did you sleep,” he asked, lightly brushing her hand.
“Tossed and turned most of the night. I started cramping a little before I got up.”
“And?” Janese shook her head. Jett exhaled slowly before beginning again. “I hope this doesn’t affect us.”
“Don’t you mean the sex,” she asked, turning around and looking at the beach house. Jett ignored the comment, even though it was true.
“I went past Wal-Mart before I went home and picked up a pregnancy test.” Janese didn’t look at him and Jett could feel a wall starting to form between them. “Janese, I told you last night that if you were pregnant I’ll be there one hundred percent.”
“I know,” Janese said with tears in her eyes. “That doesn’t ease the fact that I may have a baby growing inside me. Jett, I’m only seventee! I don’t want a child!”
“You think I do,” Jett shouted. “I don’t want a child either okay!” Janese cried harder and walked away from him. He ran after her and grabbed her in his arms. “I’m sorry.” She put her arms around him. “I’m sorry I yelled. It’s hard. On the both of us.”
“Where is the pregnancy test,” she asked.
“In the master bathroom,” Jett answered. She walked in the house with Jett by her side.
“One line is negative and two lines is positive,” Janese read.
“How long does it take to show up,” Jett asked.
“Give it another minute.” A single dark blue line started to appear. “Jett look! It’s just one.” He snatched up the test and stared at it.
“No baby,” Jett whispered. Janese rested her head on his shoulder and let out a sigh or relief. “The next time we make love we gotta use a spermicidal or something.” She looked up at him and smirked.
“It’s gonna be a while before there’s a next time, bud,” she said. Jett put his arms around Janese and rubbed her thigh.
“It’s not gonna be that long. I can guarantee that.”
“Anyway…If I’m not pregnant, then who is?”
“I don’t know. I’m just glad it’s not us.” Jett rested his hands be his his head.
“I want to have some fun now. Are those your jet skis by the house?”
“Yea.”
“Race ya’!”

“Mama yes. The test cam out positive,” Vickie explained to her mother for the millionth time. She arrived at Cheseapeake Beach a week early. Vickie and Grandma Aultmon shared a cup of coffee in the kitchen.
“My baby girl is giving me another grandbaby,” Grandma Aultmon said, sipping her coffee.
“Yea, another little one. What do you think Janwillwill say,” Vickie asked.
“I think she’ll be excited and surprised. But I wouldn’t worry. She loves Richard. And she’s too wrapped into Jett Jackson to care anyway.”
“I need to meet with Mr. Jackson.”
“He’s a very mature young man. And he calls me Grandma Aultmon.”
“When are they coming home?”
“I don’t know. Jett always brings her home at eleven forty-five. Sharp. Janese should be calling in a while anyway.”
