Eleven

The two guys sat up front while Miranda and I took the back. On the way to the boss, Mr. Talk was telling me how they’d found me out. There had been an article in the city paper about Miranda coming back. No photo, he said, just where she had been found. But he had remembered another article about the sinking of the Marie Claire, and it mentioning where communications were last made.

“I put two and two together, and showed the boss, and then we were sent to get you.”

Of all the damned luck... I asked if I was going to be let off from losing the stuff.

He did one of those sharp inhales and said, “I think you know who decides that.”

I nodded, then noticed Mr. Quiet getting quick glances at Miranda. I then pulled her close to me.

Mr. Talk noticed, gave a laugh, and said, “Don’t mind him. He’s having a bit of a dry spell. But if I know him, that spell will break soon enough.” He then gave Mr. Quiet a pat on the shoulder, letting out another laugh. He turned to the front, then back to me. He said, “We’re almost there. After a quick talk with the boss, I’ll take him out for some pussy. You won’t see us for the remainder of the visit.”

“Will it just be us three, or...?”

“Nope. Kid’s there, too.”

Great. The Sonny Corleone of this family. I’d have to be extra watchful of Miranda around him. If the boss let me, anyway. Because once you were in the boss’s room, you didn’t leave until told. And if I were told to leave Miranda outside... I had told her not to koopah with other men, but Robert could talk the panties off any girl. Fuck...

“Here.”

We were pulling into the driveway of another manor, this one near the middle of the city. Miranda was awestruck at the sight, and I couldn’t help but smile at her. Then I went back to being serious as we got out of the car (Mr. Quiet stayed behind the wheel), and were led inside. Miranda and I waited outside the boss’s office, and Mr. Talk went in. A few minutes later, he came back out and said, “She’ll see you now. I’m out.”
