Chapter 11
Behind them was the longhouse, smoke emerging from a hole at one end, and off to one side were five teepees.
"Good afternoon, Braves and inductees," Chief Jason said as the arrivals took their places to complete the Tribal circle. "Brave Sly, I'd like you to come forward and stand in the center of the circle."
"Poor Sly," thought Chucky. "Now he's going to get it. I wonder what his punishment will be." Sly stood with deference, his legs apart, hands behind his back. He held his head high. Whatever the Chief decided, he would take it like a true Warrior.
"Brave Sly, for the first time in our tribe's history, one of our inductees has made it to the campsite without being caught." The other boys dropped their jaws. "Ricky has proven himself worthy of being inducted into the Tribe on his first night. He learned his lessons well, which proves that you, Brave Sly, were a good mentor. You and Ricky will join all the Chiefs and other Braves in the Longhouse tonight." Sly's demeanor changed 180 degrees. He stood an inch taller and his face transformed into one of pride. "Come, Brave Sly, and join your student in the Tribal Circle." Sly walked over and stood beside Ricky. They gave the secret handshake. Then Sly put his hand proudly on his shoulder.
"Now, the rest of you inductees. You must learn from this. Every day provides valuable lessons for you if you will only be willing to receive them. Back at the clearing by the parking lot, Ricky took a long time to build his fire. He didn't rush off before he knew it would burn a long time. As extra insurance, he took the twigs from Jackie's fire, twigs which never caught because Jackie was in such a rush. Ricky added these to his own. He showed ingenuity and forethought. I knew then Sly had taught him well the lesson of the Wise Owl.
"Then when Ricky met the Great Bear," Chief Jason pointed over to Brave Seymour, who was standing with the Bear head and paws at his feet. "he showed no fear. Perhaps the screams from you four boys had prepared him for the danger. He told me he saw the Bear's sharp talon, but observed there was no blood on it. He used his eyes. It surprised him that the bear ripped his pants, but he was more annoyed than scared. However, he didn't let it faze him. As he hung on to them, he realized they were impeding his progress. So the first chance he had, he ripped a vine from a tree, threaded it through his belt loops, and tied it to keep his pants up." Ricky proudly lifted his shirt to show. His little dick was also swelling with pride and insisted on coming out to join the Tribal Circle.
"At that point, Ricky realized he had lost some time and Sly might be coming along to catch him. He knew Sly was a good runner. When he came to the stream, he remembered I'd said the campsite was just past the millpond. He surmised the stream would lead him to the pond just as surely as the trail. It might take longer, but he knew he could elude his pursuer that way. Ricky stealthily followed the stream all the way to the spillway that empties the pond. That's when he saw Sly up on the trail heading for the campsite. He kept himself hidden and the falling water covered the sound of his breathing. After Sly was gone, Ricky followed the other shore of the pond around to the campsite and from the trees saw Sly leave. So he came out of hiding and presented himself to me and the other Chiefs and Braves. Sly, you should be very proud of your protégé."
