Normal is Relative

A/N: Today I thought that I'd write another mission today. I spent most of the morning playing with BetterGaia and GaiArch. I spent most of the afternoon making soup and doing dishes. I didn't write a mission today. But on the other hand I did write almost 1,900 words and caught up to the goal. Good enough for me. Mission tomorrow, seems unavoidable.

Thanks to those who read this chapter and to my friends on Gaia who've been encouraging me.

Ty hated this part. He found out all about Aiden’s powers and now he had to tell them. He had to put into words how they worked with descriptions someone normal could comprehend and pretend he didn’t feel like he was betraying his only friend. It was not a easy thing to do. Strange that he had no difficulty obeying other orders, ever so calmly looking through someone’s mind and making their heart to stop or stealing someone’s intellectual property or... any number of other things.

“Various levels of manifestation.” He wrote. “Highest level- both voluntary and involuntary occurrences. Referred to as “visions.” Events he feels are more likely to happen than other possible futures appear as visions. Described as being inclusive of all five senses but impossible to interact with or opt out of. He can invite visions to occur but has only some ability to direct what they are about and does not use this ability due to fear when trapped in a vision. Involuntary visions can be staved off but not totally prevented.”

He sighed and decided to be as succinct as possible. “Secondary level- voluntary sight only. This part can be induced by thinking about an action and how it might affect a person. The nearest future instances are the most set and least changeable but the farther in the future the easier to manipulate events. Futures can only be linked to individual persons.”

“Lowest level of sight referred to as “flashes.” Flashes involuntary and occur as a result of power leaking out due to the staving off of visions. Flashes are a few seconds of some kind of action or reaction about to occur in the near future. Flashes almost always turn out to be the actual future because, as he describes, reacting to them in advance causes them.” He finished writing. He’d send it to them and they’d study it and think about it and then they’d want to test Aiden. They’d probably have him try to do some tricks for them but at the same time he knew they were impatient to have Aiden play a useful part in a mission.

He sighed deeply. He closed his laptop and pushed it away from him and paced into the kitchen. He lifted the lid on the big tall kettle and breathed in the delicious scent that wafted up to him. It smelled amazing despite Aiden’s insistence that it needed something he had to go and get. And why in the world did he have to cook it most of the day anyway? It smelled fine now, couldn’t they eat it when he got back instead of dinner? He was dying to know if it tasted as good as it smelled. “You better not have eaten any of that.” Aiden said sternly from the doorway.

Ty turned to see him removing his coat and hanging it up on the rack. He kicked off his boots and left them tumbled together by the door to melt a puddle onto the floor. He padded across the floor and set down one of the bags he was carrying. “Lunch.” He announced with no preamble. “You put it on plates and stuff while I do this.” Aiden ordered with a wave of his hand while he opened the other bag to add something to the beef stew he was making. Ty shook his head a little in bemusement but didn’t object. Instead he peeked into the bag to see what it was and got out plates. He mounded the plates with food from the cartons and set them in their usual places and then got them both a bottle of soda from the refrigerator.

He hopped onto one of the stool and rested one foot on the highest rung, his knee close to his chest. He rested his elbow casually on his knee and watched Aiden work for a few minutes. He noticed that his hair was starting to grow out in an indeterminate dark color. “Are you going to dye it again?” He asked. He didn’t elaborate on what. Aiden continued stirring until he seemed satisfied and replaced the lid. He noted Ty hadn’t gotten any silverware but took a moment to shoot him a look with one eyebrow arched up high before he grabbed forks. “Yes.” He said finally.

“Are you going to dye it blue again?” Ty questioned as he reached to take a fork from the younger male. Aiden shrugged.

“Maybe. Maybe green or red or teal or even purple. What do you think?” It was... interesting. So interesting to have someone ask his opinion about something and actually value what he said.

“I like blue.” Ty responded, considering as he started to eat his food. “But teal or green would be nice if you want a change of pace.” Aiden considered what he said and pulled a little face when he tried to eat too-hot food. He quickly twisted off the top of his soda and took a drink. He took a moment before he responded.

“Maybe not green.” He said. “You have all the green covered.” He said, waving at Ty’s appearance, his green eyes and green shirt. Ty smile, amused.

“I suppose.” He admitted. “I like green.” He plucked at the fabric of his shirt and rubbed the material between his fingers. “I don’t know. I do like green but I always felt like... my eyes are so vivid that if I wore another color I’d be clashing almost.” He tried to describe in between bites. He wasn’t terribly fashion conscious and tended to just let it be dictated to him by whatever was in the stores that he might like but at the same time he did worry a little about his appearance, it was hard not to in their society.

They finished eating and went about their day, as usual, fairly straight-forward and boring. So was the next day and the next. And it didn’t surprise him when Aiden was summoned to come and get tested. Ty asked if he’d be okay and the blue-haired male said sure, he’d been fine but Ty damn well better have ordered some food by the time he got back. And he came back hours later, ravenous. And then things were quiet again for a little while.

And then, then the mission profile came. It marked Aiden as “lead” for the mission which meant his unique talents would be more in demand that Ty’s for this. Otherwise it seemed like a mission he got a lot, a lot like their last mission, in fact. The folder was too thin, though. There wasn’t enough information. Why would they send them off after something when there was so little information? Whatever they wanted must be worth a lot to them. No doubt they’d get paid a lot for this one. If they survived it.

Aiden frowned when Ty passed him the papers to read. He continued to frown the whole time he read them. “Part of my testing... they brought me to this maze. And I had to get to the center as quickly as possible and not double back unless it was absolutely necessary. Each time I got to a branch I had to think about whether taking one turn would cause me to get to the center or not. It only took a moment each time and they seemed impressed. This missions... feels like that. We’re going to be trapped in a maze in foreign territory. No help. No turning back. And each time we have to make a decision I have to think- ‘is this going to get one of us killed? Is this going to get us this... thing they want?’” He shook his head.

“I don’t like it.” He stated flatly. “I can do it.” He said firmly. “But I don’t like it.” Ty sighed. He didn’t like it either. He didn’t like it at all. Whatever they wanted they wanted it desperately. And they were either willing to risk their lives for it or they trusted in Aiden’s powers more than he could imagine anyone without any powers of their own would be able to do. But Aiden sounded confident that he could do it.

“I don’t like it either.” Ty agreed quietly. But after that round of admissions they went on with preparations as they might usually. Plane tickets this time were unavoidable since they had to go across the ocean to complete their mission. The mission outline had detailed than any unusual equipment or gear they needed could be provided for them when they got there so obviously they didn’t have to worry about having to purchase weapons or other things once they got there.

It was almost like they were going on a vacation, packing clothes and closing up the apartment and getting ready to leave for a while. Aiden dyed his hair again in he interim, blue again, apparently he wasn’t feeling adventurous. Ty was, well, not excited. He hated airports. He hated flying and this especially was going to be such a long flight. And he hated the idea of such a risky mission. It might not work. They could die. Truthfully he had risked his life again and again secure in the knowledge that it wasn’t risky at all when you could do what he could. But those were his powers he was relying on then and this time he had to trust someone else’s gifts.

“Ty.” Aiden said his name softly. He looked concerned. They were sitting in the living room of Ty’s apartment, tomorrow they were leaving. The younger man heaved a sigh. “I can’t risk inviting a vision while we’re on the mission and to have better control I need to... have one now. They’re very- It’s very-” He seemed frustrated with the words. He apparently was trying to avoid saying they scared him. “It’s distressing. And it might be kind of creepy because I wont react to anything that’s really real but can you be all gay and cuddle me?” He said it quietly, almost inaudibly. He sounded younger then than he ever acted and vulnerable in a way Ty realized that he wouldn’t show to other people.

Ty had already been curled up at one end of the couch with his laptop. He closed it and put it on the coffee table. He didn’t say anything, just got the fuzzy blanket that was folded over the back of the couch and folded part of it around him and held out the other part invitingly. Aiden stepped over almost silently and folded himself up on the couch and leaned against the blond hesitantly, tucking the blanket around him. They both had to shift some to get more comfortable but once comfort had been attained it was.... it was rather nice. “Don’t freak out. I’ll be okay.” Aiden murmured and cuddled closer.

This.... this was what it was like to have a friend. It was nice. He felt like he was doing something to help Aiden, something the other had asked him to do. He could only assume that Aiden would feel comfortable enough to comfort him tomorrow when he had a mental breakdown in the airport. He really hated airports. But still, this was nice. And a little bit of nice and silence when you could hear everyone else’s horrible thoughts was more than he had often hoped for.
