Chapter 10

The ride had only lasted about 20 minutes, but my tired body felt as though I had been asleep forever. He parked in front of my home, and then shook me gently until I arose from my sleep.

"Where are your keys?" He asked in what was barely a whisper. I pointed to my bag, still not able to speak, and he reached down, rummaging through it, until he heard the jingle of my keys. He pulled them out, left the car, and I began to panic when he didn't open my door. I couldn't process the fact that he'd gone to open the front door to make it easier to get me inside. He returned after five minutes of fumbling to figure out which key opened which lock, dashing into the car.

Lifting me out of my seat, and carrying me up the small walkway to my front door, I realized how chilly it was. But it was nothing compared to the bone cold chill I experienced the night before. He kicked open the door with his foot, carrying me in, and expertly carried me to my bedroom. I couldn't believe that he had still remembered where it was. He began to untie my shoes and threw them off somewhere, unzipped my jacket and hung it up neatly, and then managed to lift my body and pull the sheets simultaneously, tucking me warm and safe and comfortable beneath them before turning around for the door.

"Where are you going?" I mumbled, finally able to produce words. My throat felt dry and scratchy.

"I'll be back," he said sternly, not turning back to look at me. He returned minutes later with a glass of water and a few pills. I looked at him nervously, but he looked back at me seriously, "It's just aspirin."

I took the pills and drank the water, trying to quench the serious thirst I had. He looked at me softly, caressing the side of my face before turning around to leave.

I managed to speak again, "Please don't leave me. Please don't go," I began to sob. "I'm afraid, I need you to take care of me." I thought I was done speaking until I blurted out, "I love you, Matt. Don't go." I don't know if my heart was speaking it's mind or if I was just tired and speaking absent-minded without knowing what I was saying.

He turned back and looked at my so solemnly, that I wanted to cry even harder. He just shook his head sadly. "You don't want to love a guy like me." He walked out and shut the door.
