Rice Krispies

The guys in the car next to us were gesturing; I rolled down the window.

"Yeah?"

"Dude, you want some rice krispies? We like, totally just made them and they are the best rice krispies ever!" The guy giggled; I looked over at Mom, then back.

"No, I don't think--"

"Hell, yes." Mom leaned over, grinning. "They got chocolate chips?"

The guys looked at each other with vacant smiles. "Yeah."

Mom looked over at me. "Alec, baby, take the wheel," she commanded, and of course, as I grabbed it, the light turned green and she hit the gas.

"Jesus!" Slouching down, I frantically tried to keep the car straight, and Mom kept pressing down the gas. "Mom, we're going fuckin' thirty!"

"Just...a little...closer... Got 'em! Thank you!"

Grinning, Mom sat down and jerked the wheel hard, barely making it onto the highway. "You completely ignored everything all your teachers and parents ever told you about taking things from strangers, didn't you."

Munching on a rice krispie, Mom chuckled. "Yeah, but it was totally worth it."

...Sad thing is, this is based on a true story. Coming back from NYC at one in the morning, we pulled up next to a sedan at a stoplight. The driver, San, rolled down the window and was like "Wtf." Yeah, the guys really offered us home-baked rice krispies. Felix, an old co-worker of ours, was in the back, and as San was turning them down, he was like, "Dude, sure!" and reached out and grabbed one. As he sat down and took a bite, he exclaimed "Dude, are these chocolate chips?!" just as the light turned green and San and the other driver took off. Declaring them good, we were pulling up to another light and he told them he wanted another, and I told him to grab me one. As we got close to the light, Felix started climbing out to get one and the light turned green. Of course, San and the other driver drove off leaving Felix hanging out the window, grabbing for a rice krispie from the pan. When he snagged one, we veered toward the highway on ramp. Those were awesome rice krispies. We're pretty certain that those guys (and gal) were stoned.

Fun fact: I kept wanting to type brownies as I write the tale and say it when I tell it. As far as I can tell (and drugs are pretty damn noticeable on me), those rice krispies were fine. Those guys had really just made rice krispies and handed them out in their car at one in the morning.

Perfect end to the day.
