CHAPTER ELEVEN
Monday morning presented itself as dull and gray; a perfect complement to Chay’s mood. He’d had a restless weekend worrying about facing Drew on Monday. He didn’t know if Drew would be upset because he’d been ignoring his text messages and phone calls. He was afraid the teenager would make a scene that would draw too much attention to him. The last thing Chay needed was suspicion that he’d been involved in an inappropriate manner with a student.
Chay arrived at the school in a yellow Volkswagen Beetle, courtesy of Chuck and Peter’s sister business which rented out their small stable of cars. They’d informed Chay that his Corolla was going to be out of commission for at least a week while they ordered parts and did repairs. Renting out the Beetle was yet another expense Chay had undertaken.
Having dragged his feet the entire morning, Chay was running later than usual. A few students were already hanging around his classroom when he arrived. Thankfully, none of them were Andrew.
Pauline Voorhees, a tall, gangly student that blushed every time Chay called on her, smiled shyly as Chay held the door. “Good morning, Ms. Voorhees,” Chay said, as she walked through the door ahead of him.
“Mr. Whitehorse,” Pauline said brightly, then ducked her curly head and hurried to her seat.
Chay headed for his desk, intent on getting the last few papers graded that he hadn’t had time to get to over the weekend. Chay worked steadily as more and more students trickled in. The class grew loud with their chatter and finally first bell rang. The last few teenagers hurried to their seats.
Chay got up to close the door, noting with no small relief that Drew wasn’t among them. Chay started closing the door and nearly had it shut when it caught on something. Frowning, he tried to determine what was in the way. The door was swiftly pulled from Chay’s grasp and a sweaty looking Drew outfitted in workout clothes, stood on the other side, panting for breath.
“Sorry, Teach. Mr. Barnes extended practice longer than usual.”
Drew held out a pink slip of paper. Chay didn’t have to look at it to know it was a pass from the coach.
Chay felt like more than butterflies were flapping in his belly. It felt like hornets.
***
By noon the heavens had opened up and given them rain. The steady patter of rain beat down on the windows, peppering the stilted silence in the nearly abandoned classroom. Chay sat at his desk during his lunch hour, instead of going to the teacher’s lounge to get a jump-start on correcting homework. But after twenty minutes he had barely made a dent in the pile. His concentration was shot; his thoughts kept turning to Drew. He had expected for the teenager to act out, to try and embarrass Chayton in front of the other students as a form of payback for having been snubbed.
On the contrary, Drew had been uncharacteristically silent. His attention had been absolute, his expression almost thoughtful. Drew didn’t need to say a word to distract the class or Chay. Chay was aware of him like none of the other students. He had only to look at the young man and his thoughts would desert him. More than once the students had to remind him what he’d been talking about or where they left off in their textbooks.
Chay put down his red pen and massaged his aching temples. He had to stop this. His preoccupation with Drew was driving him to distraction. If things continued like this, Drew wouldn’t be the one to put his career in jeopardy. He’d do it all by himself.
Fuck!
“I thought I’d find you here.”
Chay’s head snapped up at the sound of Drew’s voice. He realized that he’d recognize that voice anywhere.
Drew stood in the doorway, taking up the space with the breadth of his shoulders and his long legs. He smiled at Chay and reached behind him to shut the door.
Chay swallowed, feeling his skin break out in goosebumps. Chay should have closed the door. He should have locked it.
“Can I help you Mr. Robinson?” It took a lot of effort but Chay made his voice professional and clipped, letting Drew know that they were on formal terms, only.
Drew strolled into the room and laid a heavy Physics book on Chay’s desk. “I think you can, Mr. Whitehorse.” Leaning one hip against the side of Chay’s desk, Drew folded his arms over his chest and looked down at his teacher. “I’ve been worried about you, Chay. I sent you several text messages yesterday asking how you made out with your car.”
“It’s in the shop. I-I…it’s fine.” Chay pushed at his pen with the tips of his fingers, nervously rolling it back and forth. “Look, this isn’t the type of thing we should discuss here.”
Drew placed one hand on Chay’s desk and leaned down until Chay could feel Drew’s warm breath stir his hair. “And where should we discuss it? On the phone?” Drew snapped his fingers. “I forgot. You don’t answer your phone.”
“There was no need for you to call me. I told you that it was over between us! I can’t be…I can’t be that.”
“You can’t even say the words, Chay?”
“I told you to call me Mr. Whitehorse, Mr. Robinson. I think you should leave now.”Chay slid his chair back and stood. His hands were a bit shaky as he gathered up his papers and drew them into a neat pile. “Class will resume in another ten minutes.”
“Then we should make this quick,” Drew stood up.
“What quick?”
Drew ignored his question. “If you can’t say the words, I won’t believe you when you say it’s over. Prove it to me, Chay. Prove that you don’t feel anything for me. Kiss me?”
Chay couldn’t be more surprised if Drew had hauled off and slapped him. “I’m not giving you a kiss Mr. Robinson. Now, get the hell out of my classroom!”
Drew tsked at his language. “Now what would Principal Monroe say if he heard you now? And what would students think if they came in here and found you pinned down against your desk with me on top of you. I don’t think they’d care who had started what.”
Chay shook his head. “You’re not going to blackmail me!”
Drew moved so fast, Chay didn’t have time to get out of the way. His wrist was grabbed, and he was pulled forward onto the desk. His essay papers slipped from his hands and scattered across the floor. Drew moved into position so that his body pressed down heavily against the back of Chay’s. The blond’s warm breath curled around the shell of Chay’s ear, making him shudder at his next words. “You’ve been ignoring and avoiding me all weekend. Lying to yourself about what you want. Tell yourself that you can’t have it.” Drew skimmed his fingers up the sides of Chay’s ribs. “But you can have it, Chay! Don’t be afraid.”
“This is crazy!” Chay ground out, straining to free himself of Drew’s grip. It was, of course, useless.
“What’s crazy is that you fight me so hard. You’re fighting yourself Chay, just like you fought yourself yesterday. You only lost. Remember how hard you came for me, Chay? Don’t you want to do that again?"
Drew’s tongue traced the shape of Chay’s ear. He blew against the wet path he’d made. Chay shuddered. Drew groaned. “Hmm, I like having you trembling under me, Chay.”
“Not here, Drew. Please, don’t go-go that far here.”
The blond shook his head. “Not here, Chay. I only want a kiss. I only want you to prove me wrong. If you can.” Drew dipped his head and laved his tongue against the fluttering pulse at Chay’s throat.”
Chay arched away. His heart felt as if it were about to burst right from his chest. “Drew! Please!”
“Fuck, you make me impossibly hard when you beg!” Drew hissed. That said hardness was ground against Chay’s wiggling ass. Pressing his lips back to Chay’s ear Drew said, “You can end this Chay. All I want right now is a kiss. One kiss. Give it to me and I’ll leave. How much longer until lunch period ends?”
Squeezing his eyes shut, Chay tried to tune out Drew’s voice so he could think. Drew said he just wanted a kiss, for now. But what more would he want the next time? Because there would be a next time. Chay tried really hard not to think of a next time. He could only worry about the here and now. At the most, he had five more minutes before lunch ended. Then the halls would be flooded with students, some of them wanting to know why Chay’s door was locked. Although there were no windows to peek inside from the hall, Chay didn’t want to have to let the students in looking ruffled and dazed from Drew’s kisses. He needed to be sitting behind his desk to hide the hard-on he wouldn’t be able to explain.
With little choice, Chay went limp beneath him “Okay.”
Drew laid a tender kiss on the side of Chay’s aching temple and lifted enough of his body weight off of Chay to allow the smaller man to turn onto his back. Drew’s muscled legs settled between Chay’s thighs. His fingers went to Chay’s hair and wrapped the braid around his fist.
“When we’re truly alone I want this hair out, spilling across the pillows.”
Chay ignored his comment, refusing to think past the moment. In his mind, there would be no next time. Taking a deep breath he leaned forward and pressed his lips against Drew’s. He was drawing away when Drew’s fingers dove into his hair, cradling his skull, holding him still.
“Open for me, Chay.”
Afraid not to, Chay did, moaning with arousal as Drew’s tongue delved into his mouth. Drew captured his tongue and suckled on it. The blond’s lips and tongue laid claim to Chay in a kiss that seemed much too long. All Chay could do was clutch at Drew’s wide shoulders as his mouth was devoured, his breath taken, and his cries were swallowed. Shame brought heat to his cheeks as Chay found himself leaning forward to recapture Drew’s heat when the young man pulled away.
Drew pressed one lingering kiss to the corner of Chay’s pouting mouth. “Later, baby.” Chay struggled not to flinch after hearing the endearment. Drew had been right yet again. He did want, Drew: Every dominant, arrogant, selfish piece of him. And he’d just given Drew ammunition.
Just as calmly as if Drew hadn’t tilted Chay’s world on its axis, Drew gathered Chay’s papers off the floor and placed them in a neat pile on his desk. After that he strolled to the door. “See you tomorrow.” He winked at Chay and let himself out.
Chay slid off his desk and went about the business of righting his world, again.
