Rejected

Rejected

Well the title says it all. Sucks rocks. I can add this to my old stack of rejection letters.

On the brightside, I can tell that they actually read the submission. My rejection letter wasn’t a form letter. Whoo Hoo! So…I shall approach my newly found beta and work on Cake, to make it more appealing. I knew the first chappie of Cake is a little disturbing but I couldn’t see how to show how horrible the kidnap year was for SEX. So maybe two heads are better than one and I’ll find a solution.

To those willing to try and get published, (and possibly get your teeth kicked in.) I am going to post my letter of submission as well as my lovely rejection letter from LOOSEID. LooseID has their own website and they have their own guidelines on how to submit your work to them.

I actually did my little happy dance when I got past the initial screening to get to the editor-reviewer stage. Which, may be a first for little old moi.

No, my teeth aren’t kicked in. I just feel gut punched. However, as I said this is the nicest rejection letter I’ve ever gotten.

ORIGINAL SUBMISSION QUERY LETTER

Attention: Editor-in-Chief, Treva Harte

I am submitting my manuscript “Cake” for your publishing consideration. It is Book one of the Lord Emperor Vampire series. Books One and Two of the series are completed. Book Three is currently being written and is estimated to be complete by June 2007.

“Cake” is around 140,500 words.

“Cake” is a contemporary male/male vampire genre. The main character, Sigmund Edward Xavier, (Sex) has fallen captive to a Vampire. During that first year, Marcus transforms him from a legally blind morbidly obese computer programmer into a beautiful, yet psychotic, sex slave. As per Vampiric law, on the anniversary of the abduction, Sex is given the choice to become a Vampire or to remain a sex toy. In the course of his learning how to be a Vampire, Sex finds himself caught up in events, intrigue and House bloodlines that extend back 400 years.

The degree of sensuality within the novel is definitely rated R. Descriptions are graphic. While the first chapters show how Sex came into being, the transformation of the relationship from Captor to Lover/ Slave to Lord Emperor continues through the novel. Sex scenes within the chapters are NOT gratuitous and highlight the changes in the main characters progress.

The marketing would be directed to those readers who love slash, gothic angst and complicated vampire stories. I have been encouraged to get “Cake” published and I have no doubt I would be able to secure a readership for the entire series.

My works up to date have been self published on the Internet. My current series that I am working on is listed below:

2006 – Cake: Book One of the Lord Emperor Vampire series (First Draft on Internet)
Sex has found himself captive to a Vampire for one year. On his anniversary is he offered a choice, stay a sex toy or become an equal. Who knew it would be much, much worse.

2007 – Cinnamon: Book Two of the Lord Emperor Vampire series (First Draft on Internet)
Xavier has become First of Assassins in the multi-national Shadoe Inc. He is the acknowledged unofficial Lord Emperor of the Vampire Nation. He has love and family. Life should be perfect except, what can he do when they find out that every choice and decision that he had made has been influence by someone else. The original Lord Emperor who wants back into the world by taking over the body of the current Lord Emperor.

Thank you for your time and consideration,

Derekica Snake

Attachments: 400 Years Ago – Synopsis of “Cake”
Chapters-1-4 – Partial Manuscript

I don’t think I’ve ever posted this synopsis of Cake on AFF. I wrote this intending it to be the little eye catching blurb on the back cover of the book.

The LooseID guidelines asked for the first three chapters, or chapters up to the part where there is the start of a loving relationship between the two male characters. I deemed that to be up to chapter four which is now. (Revised Cake chapters 1-4)

SEX tasted like sweet vanilla cake.

400 years ago, utter devastation changed the Vampire Nation. The Fourteen Houses of the Blue Bloods collapsed under the onslaught of human persecution and the systematic cull that followed. Even the Lord Emperor’s House of Von Drachenfeld fell, but this was not done by human hands alone. The remaining Red Vampires seized the reins of power and after bloody conflict returned the Nation back to the pinnacle above the rest of the Blood Races.

A year ago, Sigmund Edward Xavier ran afoul of a Vampire, Marcus, and he found himself a captive and an unwilling sex slave. On the anniversary of his abduction, he is given the choice of becoming a Vampire; an equal, a lover and beloved son or he can remain a toy. His decision triggers ripples throughout the House of Du Bussey into which he is reborn; to the clandestine House of Assassins into which he is drawn; all the way to the ruling High Council.

Sex is a Vampire. Not only a Vampire of a prestigious and ancient House, but he is also a lost Blue Blood. To make matters worse, he is a Von Drachenfeld – the true Lord Emperor of the Vampire Nation.

Beautiful, Winged, Powerful and Deadly.

In the matter of months, he moves from a floundering fledgling to the First of Assassins and becomes a beacon to those who long for the Empire’s return. SEX ends up tangled in secrets and lies. Even with his beloved, Marcus.

Then that which culled the Blues 400 years previously, began to move again. The House of Von Drachenfeld had fallen before…would it fall again before it even had a chance to build foundations? Could Marcus, a young Red Vampire, save SEX, his son/lover, from the Cull that had pulled the previous Lord Emperor to his destruction?

This was mailed off on April 18, 2007. I received this response on April 26, 2007, which is a pretty damn good turn around time. Sometimes, you don’t hear anything for months. This is where I did my little happy dance.

Hi, Derekica/Kiix:

Thank you for considering Loose Id for Cake.

It has been sent along to an editor for further consideration.  Our general response time is 6-8 weeks.  If you haven't heard from us by then, please feel free to send a follow-up email.

Warmly,

The Loose Id Editorial Team

I received this yesterday – May 19, 2007. This is really good, because I basically received a response in 4 weeks. I’ve waited before for three-six moths for any type of response and usually use got “we don’t deal with your genre.” A lot of help to improve with that sort of letter. Thank the gods, I’m a stubborn SOB or I guess it would be Daughter of a Bitch – BOD. Haha.

Dear Kiix:

We know that you have loved and labored over your manuscript for months, even years. We're thrilled that, in looking for a home for Cake, you thought of Loose Id. Thank you for trusting us with your creation.

An editor and one member of our management team have reviewed Cake. We found your story to be original and different from the general Vampire story.

Regretfully, we don't feel your story is right for us at this time. Though Vampire books are selling very well, we have found that our reader base will not accept books with excessive rape scenes and brutality. You may also benefit from a critique partner to help fill in missing words and polishing grammar in your book.

Just because we aren't interested in acquiring your manuscript right now doesn't mean we never will be, or that your work lacks merit. We commend you in finishing a novel and hope that you will work on refining your writing.  By completing Cake, you have already done a great amount of work and we applaud that accomplishment.

Thank you for submitting your work to Loose Id.

So…what now? Onwards and upwards. I am not done yet. As I said, I had an offer of a beta and I’ve taken her up on it. All I can do is ‘spit in the hole and tune again.”

Thanks to the Loyal for their support and their comments/reviews as the Lord Emperor Vampire series continues. At this time, a rough total is 1458 reviews for all 3 books—which is pretty damn amazing to me. I do believe I wrote somewhere that I would have been happy with 10 reviewers.

As mentioned, I heavily rely on the readers input to kick start my creativity. Ohhh, I’m going need some kicking. Naw, I just need some coffee.

I hope this little excursion into the world of publishing has assisted someone getting their manuscript (can you even call it that anymore, it’s all electronic) ready for publishing. Anyhoo…back to “Caramel.”

Tah!
