Chapter Twenty-Two
Chapter Twenty-Two
“You never mentioned Micah,” Rowan said.
Now Garret shrugged. “He’s not worth mentioning, so tell me, what else did Micah say?”
“He told me that you could crush us so we had to act fast and we only had one chance,” Robby said.
“Anything else?” she could feel the power pouring out Garret as he stared at the two boys.
“Just that if we didn’t do it he’d take care of you, and us, himself.”
“Never leave witnesses,” Garret said tonelessly. “I’m going to let you in on a secret. Yes, I’m a vampire. But you were just dealing with the devil. Also I’m going to let you live, but I’m going to take away all of your memories of this, of us, and of vampires in general. This won’t be pleasant.” The men stumbled onto their knees. Rowan watched as their faces went from pained to vacant. “Find your own way out in five minutes.”
“What just happened?” Kalena asked.
Garret didn’t look at either of the women. “You know the bad evil vampires you wanted to kill?”
“Yeah.”
“You may get your chance.”
“Garret-” Rowan started. He turned on his heel and started to walk away. She and Kalena exchanged glances before following him. “Wait.”
“Let’s just get out of here,” he said.
“Stop,” she said stepping in front of him and standing with her arms crossed. “Now, are you okay?”
He snorted. “Just peachy. This guy who was like a father for me wants to kill me. I’m great.”
“Do you want to talk about it?”
“Not really.” He crossed his own arms staring down at her.
“Garret-” she tried.
“Later.” He stepped around her and walked to Kalena’s car getting into the back seat. Kalena glanced at Rowan, shrugged and got into the driver’s side, Rowan reluctantly, got in next to her. Kalena turned on the radio recognizing the tension in the car. Rowan tried to touch Garret’s mind several times but his shields were stronger than ever. When the three finally arrived back at the club the others had already left.
“I guess I’ll see you guys later,” Kalena said.
“Where are you staying?” Rowan asked. Kalena gave her a weird, not altogether friendly, look. “In case something happens to you too.”
“Fine.” She wrote it, and her cell phone number down. “Try using this instead of my head next time, okay, Rowan?”
“You just called me by my name,” Rowan said.
“Did not.”
“Did so. You said ‘Rowan’ and that’s my name-”
“It was a fluke.”
“No, it wasn’t.”
“Yes, it was!”
Rowan grinned at her. “You’re starting to like us.”
“Am not!”
“Are too.”
“Am not-”
“Stop it, both of you,” Garret took a deep, calming breath rubbing the bridge of his nose. “I’ve had a long night and I’m really tired. Can we just go?”
“Okay, Grouchy McBitchalot,” Kalena said. “I’ll see you guys later.” She got into her car and drove away. She got into her car and drove away.
“Garret,” Rowan said touching his shoulder. “Are you really okay?”
He laughed hollowly. “I don’t recall saying that I was okay to begin with.”
“Okay, good point.” He opened the door for her. “Nuh-uh.”
“What?”
“I’m not letting you drive when you’re this upset.”
“Honey, I’m fine, at least to drive.”
“No. Give me you keys.”
“No.” She glared up at him. “I’ve heard stories of how you drive. There is no way I’m letting you drive my car.”
“I drive perfectly well.”
He snorted. “Bullshit.”
“Watch your language,” she said crossing her arms.
“Mmm... no.”
“Garret,” she sighed, “there are days, most of them actually, that I want to strangle you.”
“Angel, look at me. I’m okay.” He smiled a little. “Fighting with you helped. As it usually does.”
She almost smiled at that remark. “I don’t know if I should be flattered or insulted.”
“Go with flattered,” he urged. “It usually works out better for me.” The smile she had been fighting came full force and she shook her head wryly. “Let’s go home.”
“Alright, but if you do anything weird I’m walking.”
“Anything? Damn it, that destroys all my plans.” She got in and he shut the door behind her.
“Wait, I should have specified. Take me to my house.”
“C’mon, angel, just for a couple hours. It’s a Friday and you’re a young woman, besides, do you really think Lupe would want you to sulk all night?”
“No,” she said. “But-”
“Besides, Cherish and Brayden were talking about staying at your room and my roommate will be out partying all night. I’d like the company for a while.”
“Okay. So now what?” she asked once they were moving.
“Now?” He shrugged. “Now I guess I’ll find Liam and fight him.” Fight Liam… the mere thought of going against the man who was like a father to him made Garret’s heart ache.
“But why would he take Lupe?” Rowan asked after a few moments.
“Honestly, hon, I don’t think he did. I think that was the work of someone else. But they’re alive and they’re okay, I’m monitoring them the best that I can. If anything happens I’ll know. And if those bastards move her we’ll have a lead.” She nodded as he pulled into the parking lot. They went up to his room and he opened the door. She sat down on his bed as he quickly and lightly cleaned the messy bedroom. She yawned staring up at the sky from the window in Garret’s room. “Angel, you alright?”
“Yeah,” she whispered.
“Okay, baby, talk to me.” He flopped down beside her.
“I’m just worried. First there’s Lupe. Then... I mean, you keep telling me about how terrible these people are, and they want you dead. I don’t want you to get hurt.”
“They aren’t terrible... They were my family, I betrayed them by leaving without telling them why I was leaving. But I’m going to be fine. C’mon, we’ve faced demons, hunters and we’ve come out fine. ”
“Garret, that demon never even tried to attack us, and those hunters were just a couple of scared kids. You’re just trying to make me calm down.”
“It’s not working, is it?”
“No.”
“Honey, listen, yes, they are strong, but I can handle this. All I have to do is beat Liam.” As if he could. Liam was over three hundred years old. He had years of fighting experience and was the strongest telepath and telekinetic that Garret had ever met.
“But you said he was really powerful.”
“Darlin’, I’m not a push over.”
“I know... but... I just don’t want you to get hurt.”
“Rowan, don’t worry so much, okay?”
“That’s like telling me not to breathe.”
“You’re way too tense,” he murmured kissing her chin. “I keep telling you that I can help with that.”
“Garret-”
“What?”
She shook her head sitting up. “I should probably get going.”
“Why?”
“Tristan and Cat aren’t going to be home so Cherish’s-”
/Row, I’m going to need the room tonight, Cherish sent to Rowan./
“Okay, I guess I’m staying here.”
“You never mentioned Micah,” Rowan said.
