Chapter 11

“Minako, welcome back,” Akane said suddenly and grabbed her daughter’s arm and dragged her into the circle of friends. Minako was surprised to see that Mariko, Belle, and Sage had joined her parents in a semi-circle and began talking to one another. She was even more surprised when Nemesis rejoined them and placed his arm back around Minako’s body possessively. Who was he trying to impress? Her step-father? Thomas? Sage and Belle? He seemed to want everyone to know that the golden angel beside him belonged to him fully that night, and everyone seemed to be picking up on that vibe.

“You seem to have made some interesting new friends, Minako,” Daisuke pointed out.

Minako closed her eyes and had to count to four before answering, as she often did when starting a conversation with Daisuke in public. Four was the ultimate amount of time silence was allowed in a crowd, if she went to five people became suspicious. She had taught herself over the years to contain all stray thoughts within four seconds.

“I am very blessed in my choice of friends.” Minako worded her sentence carefully, allowing Mariko to know she was lucky to have her, and letting the other three know that the ones she chose were the ones she was lucky to have, though she could not be entirely ungrateful to Nemesis. He seemed to be trying to help her, though he did not know the extent of what he needed to do.

“Minako,” Sage suddenly butted in before anyone else could start another awkward conversation that was leading absolutely nowhere. “Why don’t you dance with me before this boring ball ends?”

“How do I know that you will not just finding dancing with me droll?” Minako asked in turn. She did not know where the teasing nature had come from, was Sage bringing this out in her or was it the need for escape?

Sage shrugged his shoulders in his casual uncaring way. “You don’t,” he explained, “but won’t it be fun to see if you can keep up with me on the dance floor.”

Minako gave Sage her hand and her soul for the time being, and followed him onto the dance floor. What surprised her most was the gentleness of his gestures, the smoothness of his hands on her back and in her hand. For a few moments as Ewan McGregor’s voice poured at a beautiful duet with Nicole Kidman over speakers mixed by a deejay who watched too many musicals Minako lost herself in the song. She danced in tune with Sage and forgot her horrid nausea at having to face her family, the jealousy at seeing Thomas Evans with that woman, and the knocking knee sensation of finding that she just might fit in with this dark trio whom she had once despised.

“Sage,” Minako said quietly, still swaying with him to the song that played just for them.

“Hmmm?”

“I know you have a motive for everything,” she said quietly, “but thank you.”

Sage leaned in closer, pulling their bodies together, holding on like he would never let her go, gentle and unresisting, but firm and unreleasing. “I will not let him hurt you again,” he whispered in her ear for only her to hear.

Minako leaned her head on his shoulder and could not say a word. For one word that would have slipped through her lips and she would have let the sob that was suddenly lodged in her throat be released. Instead she enjoyed the moment while it lasted, but like all moments, it would not last. Reality would set in once more.

“Minako,” Daisuke stepped over and looked down at his step-daughter with a pride that almost seemed real, but she scoffed inside. If it was real it was not at her talents with a violin. “Did you save a dance for me?”

Minako shuddered, but Sage did not release her from his grip. He kept his hands in hers and pulled her closer to him. “I’m sorry; I wasn’t finished with her yet.”

Daisuke looked perturbed by the interruption. “I thought Nemesis was your boyfriend.”

“Neither of us are her boyfriend,” Sage pointed out blankly. “We’re just fucking her.” Minako gagged. Daisuke blanched. Sage was not finished speaking yet. “You should know what that is like, after all.” Sage leaned in closer and smiled ruthlessly at the older man. “And as long as Nemesis, Belle, and I are around, you will never lay another finger on her again. Have a nice evening Mr. Aino.” Sage wrapped his hands around the blonde angel once more and twirled her out to the middle of the dance floor.

“I’m going to pay for that one day, you know,” Minako told him, her voice quivering. “I am supposed to go home for summer break.”

“Relax,” Sage said a little impatiently. “I told you I would protect you. It is time you learned to trust in something I say, even if just a little.”

Minako looked up at him doubtfully, but she could not seem to find a way to argue any more with it. She pulled in close to Sage and said, “I want to see how good you are to the fast ones.”

Sage nearly laughed out loud. “Honey, I’m better when things move fast.”
