A Birthday Surpise
Chapter 10
A Birthday Suprise
I awoke the next day feeling much better than I had last night, thanks to the nightmare not returning I managed to get a full night of rest. Yawning, I looked to where my cat was sleeping and could not hold back a small laugh at the silly position in which she was snoozing.
Shaking my head I headed quietly out of my room and down stairs for breakfast, as I entered the dinning room I was surprised that my granddad was no where to be seen. I searched the house but could not find him, just as the panic was about to consume me, I noticed a letter sitting on the table next to the front door.
Walking over, I picked up the letter and began to read,
{Dear Nathan,
I hope you get this letter and I am sorry for not being here when you awoke
I have been called away on urgent business and cannot make it to your
Birthday. I am terrible sorry for the inconvenience; I will make it up to you
When I get home.
Love,
Grandfather}
Sighing I placed the letter back on the table, granddad never missed my birthday and this year I am old enough to go to school. A great feeling of sadness over came me, I could not hold back my tears any longer; it’s not fair; it is just like when I was still living with my family.
Walking slowly out of the house, I walked out into the field; maybe the lovely day would help me clear my head and help me calm down. I know granddad would not deliberately miss my birthday, I know he loves me and is sorry for not being here with me. I decided just to stay there in the field for the day, spending today alone is something I had not planed on doing.
I drifted off to sleep and didn’t awaken until I felt the cool breeze of night whipping against my face, waking from my dream I found that the sun was setting low in the sky and it looked as though it might start to rain. Picking myself up from that spot, I ran all the way back to the house and managed to make it inside before it started to downpour.
My birthday had been terrible, granddad was not here, and I had no cake, no presents, no nothing; but rain. Again the all too familiar feeling was present in my heart as I headed up to bed, my heart hurt too bad to care about dinner, right now the only thing I wanted; was to crawl into bed and forget this day ever happened.
I was awaked very late that night, blinking the sleepiness out of my eyes; I gazed at the sad face of my grandfather. He pulled me into a warm and comforting embrace and apologized for not being here today for my birthday.
I told my granddad that it was ok and that I forgave him for not being here on my birthday, grandfather tucked me back into bed and told me tomorrow that he would make it up to me. Saying his good nights, granddad turned and walked out the door; I could hear the faint click of the door closing as I drifted back to sleep.
I slept relatively peaceful that night not considering the fact that the same nightmare I had been having returned that night, I tossed and turned restlessly in my bed; trying to fight against the phantoms that haunted my dreams.
Morning found me wrapped up in the sheets and looking very tired, I had not had a peaceful night’s sleep. The nightmares that haunted me kept waking me into the world of the awake; I untangled myself from the sheets and slowly made my way into the bathroom for a shower.
Once I had finished and dressed, I tiredly made my way down to breakfast. Granddad was sitting at the table with breakfast waiting; he had a concerned look on his face. “What is wrong granddad” I asked him when I had seen that look, “I heard you moaning in your sleep, are you alright Nathan?”
“I’m fine granddad, just a nightmare”, no more was said after that so we just ate breakfast in silence. After the dishes were cleaned and put away granddad and I grabbed our coats and headed into town, on the way there granddad handed me the letter from the Mages Guild I would be attending come September.
Once we made it into town we walked to the Twin Raven Inn, granddad led me into the ally where he did the same spell as last year. Once the wall had split open we walked to Lucatos where granddad withdrew enough for my birthday gift and all of my school supplies.
First we headed into Needles and Hems, where I was fitted for my new school robes. Next we went over to L&M’S to get my schoolbooks, the last stop was the Magical School Supplies shop to pick up the other things I would need for school.
Once everything on the list was gathered, we headed out to find my birthday present. We headed to S&S, granddad bought me some sweets and then we headed to the Mage Dueling Supplies shop and grandfather bought me a brand new set of dress robes.
Once we were finished, granddad and I headed back to the entrance to Magito Place and then headed home. School would be starting next month and I could not wait.
I had a smile on my face the rest of the day and all through dinner and my cake I couldn’t keep the excited smile off my face, after dinner was finished granddad picked me up in his arms and carried me up to bed.
As I changed into my nightshirt and slipped beneath the covers, granddad kissed my head and then left me to get some rest. I slipped into a blissful rest that night the smile never left my face.
