Chapter 11 – Early Morning Wanderings

“I still haven’t been able to contact Fuji,” Shai sighed, closing her cell phone and sitting on the couch.

Yuki just shook her head sadly. “You can reach Kyoei, up in the mountains and buried away, but we can’t reach Fuji, who is in the midst of Tokyo.”

“Do you think she remembered to update her roaming?”

Shai and Yuki exchanged looks before letting out heavy sighs. Probably not. Fuji was constantly worried about studying and how she was going to be the best business woman ever that she probably forgot something as simple as charging her phone.

Shai’s phone began to ring, and with a great surprise she saw Fuji’s name on her caller ID. She could hardly contain herself as she flipped open the phone and cried, “Fuji! We’ve been trying to call you for days!”

“I’ve been trying to call you,” Fuji said, her voice tinny. “Now I’ve been trying even harder.”

“Did you update your roaming?” Shai asked. “I could never get a hold of you after we told you Kaori was having her baby.”

Fuji was silent on the other end for a few moments before she said, “Um, no…”

Shai held back a laugh while Yuki sat beside her waiting for any word from her other friend. “Fuji, Kaori had a baby girl, she is so beautiful!”

“Who’s is it?”

“Nakago’s.”

“Is she healthy?”

“Yes,” Shai breathed, anxious to find out Fuji’s reaction.

“That is the most important thing.” Did Fuji’s voice sound forlorn? What was going on with her? She usually was so opinionated about everything, and now she just sounded relieved to have made contact with the real world she came from.

“Kaori… isn’t doing well,” Shai admitted. “The doctors aren’t sure if she is going to make it.”

“That’s terrible!” Fuji cried out. “I’m so sorry. Driver, turn around, I have to go see my friends!”

“Fuji, driver? Where are you?”

“I’m on my way to the salon three block from your house,” Fuji admitted. “I have to go have my hair styled, shut up driver, because I’m going to a party tonight for my mother. Well, a different party. Is Yuki there with you?”

“Yes, she’s here.”

“I’ll be there in five minutes.”

True to her word Fuji came busting through like a gust of wind and went straight to her two friends. When the three of them saw each other, the first time in almost three months, they fell into a large hug. The group came together like there was never any anger at not having returned calls and clung for a few moments.

“Yuki, how are you doing?” Fuji asked.

Yuki shrugged her shoulders, not really knowing what to say. “I’m holding up,” she said with her warm smile, and made even herself believe it.

“How are you Shai?” Fuji asked, turning to her sister.

“I’m well,” Shai admitted. She did not want to burden Fuji with trivial things, not when she looked so distressed. In truth she missed Kyoei, who had only returned twice since he went to see his family. Once entirely to see her, the second time it was only a passing glance as he came back to do a gig he had promised to do. He was supposed to be back this very weekend, but she had yet to hear from him.

“How are you?” Yuki asked, looking to her friend.

“I’m engaged, again,” Fuji admitted, holding up her left hand and showing the ring that Devilin had placed there just last night.

“To who?”

“Devilin,” Fuji admitted. “That is what the party tonight is for. It is an engagement party to celebrate the arranged marriage of myself and Devilin. It is also to celebrate something much more sinister.”

“What?” Yuki and Shai asked, not liking the dark shadow that passed over Fuji’s eyes.

Fuji looked to Shai, almost gauging her for a moment before saying the words. “Shai… how over Teiyoku are you?”

“Very,” Shai said without a moment’s hesitation.

Fuji nodded solemnly. “Good,” she said. “I wanted to be the one to tell you, before you heard it from someone else. My mom is pregnant… with Teiyoku’s child. They are going to announce it tonight at the dinner.”

“That…” Shai began, looking down at the ground. For a moment both Fuji and Yuki worried that she was going to cry, but then Shai looked at Fuji and snarled, “That’s kind of gross, and twisted if you think about it. You will be related to that baby, though the baby is no relation to me, but the baby will be related to my baby, who is related to me, who is related to you, who is related to that baby.”

Yuki’s head spun. “Wait… don’t talk in circles,” and she literally had to reach up and grab her head to keep the world from spinning.

“Miss Fuji, we need to go or else you will be late,” the driver walked through the door without an invitation and glared at his young mistress, the master of him, yet he would not be yelled at by the older mistress because of the young one’s whims.

“I have to go,” Fuji explained, “but I am very glad I could see the two of you before hand. I’ll update my roaming, I promise.”

“I want a picture,” Yuki cried after Fuji as she was nearly literally dragged out of the house by the driver.
“Are you really okay?” Yuki asked Shai after she closed the door behind her friend.

Shai nodded, looking up the stairs to her son’s room, her eyes falling on the door of the sleeping child. “I’m okay,” she said wistfully, “I think it just bothers me that my Shu is going to have a half-sibling out there and he will probably never even know him, or her.”

“Don’t worry,” Yuki said, “you know Fuji will make sure the two have playdates together or something fun. Besides, you have enough to worry about with a potential adoption up for Bliss.”

Shai went and sat on the couch, nearly falling onto it. “I wonder how much more I can do. If I take on a second child, I can barely do my school work now.”

“Don’t tell me you are re-thinking taking Bliss?” Yuki asked in a panic. Shai would be the best thing for that little girl.

Shai shook her head. “No, I want Bliss,” she said honestly. “I want that little girl so bad I ache, honestly. And Kyoei sounded excited that ‘we’ would be adopting a little girl. No, it is not Bliss I am re-thinking, it’s school.”

Amatsu woke feeling groggy, and ready. He reached across the bed, expecting a body to be next to him, and was surprised to awake to no one. It took him a few minutes of waking to remember all that he had been thinking of was a dream. Fuji was not there beside him, she was in her tiny, cramped apartment that Kyoei had been afraid to leave her in. Amatsu was almost tempted to go find the apartment and just make Fuji bend to his will, though that would be too harsh, but he ached for her, more now than he had ever before.

It took a few moments more for him to realize what had awoken him. It was his cell phone, chirping every two minutes to let him know he had a message that he had not heard come in. He reached for his cell phone and checked the number. He did not recognize the number, but he checked the message anyway.

SHE’S MY FIANCEE NOW, AND KYOEI WILL BE THERE TO WATCH IT ALL HAPPEN. I WIN! ~ Devilin

What the…?

Amatsu dialed a number he knew by heart, the number of a friend he had barely spoken to since he moved out to Tokyo to go to school near the woman he loves. Kyoei answered on the first ring.

“Amatsu, long time no-”

“Kyoei, are you deejaying tonight?”

“Yeah, at that hotel we had that Christmas party at that one time,” Kyoei admitted. “It’s a bunch of old people stuff, but for some reason they specifically asked for me, but I do know those tracks too.”

“What time?” Amatsu asked.

“What? Why the questions all of a sudden?” Amatsu quickly told Kyoei the text message he had just received. “Dude, you think this is an engagement party? I don’t remember the name being Tennison or Chenbaro, Hell, I don’t remember a name at all.”

“Because it is the Maple-Gold Corporation Summer party,” Amatsu guessed, and he guessed quite right. “This is a corporate party. Fuji’s being used.”

“What are you going to do about it?” Kyoei asked.

Amatsu smirked to himself, looking in his closet for something decent. “I’m going to be there to ruin it all.”

Shai answered the phone before it even let out a full ring. “Kyoei?”

Kyoei laughed on the other end and said simply, “It worked.”
