Now what?

Chapter Ten: Now What?

“Damn it Greg, can’t you shut that damned child of yours up?”

Mark and Greg had changed places, now Mark was driving.

“Sorry, I think you cut his hand when you took him out of the window.”

“Well, I am sorry, I heard footsteps coming down the hall. I panicked.”

“Hey!? Who are you two? Where are my Mommy and my Mama?” Kessie said, waking up.

“Quiet!” Mark snapped at her, the kidnaping had grated his nerves, and he was tired and his hands were still both burning and freezing at the same time.

Poor little Kessie did as she was told, and curled up in her seat with her blanket, which somehow came along with her as the lights flew by.

Greg put a band aid on little Connor’s cut, “There, there, no more tears... it’s all better now...”

“His name is Connor... and my name is Kessie!” Kessie said.

“No, you are not Kessie, your name is Cassandra, and that isn’t your brother Connor, it’s your friend Jordan.”

“That’s not right... you just can’t change my name,” Kessie said, then she yelled, “MY NAME IS KESSIE MARIE!”

Mark, while driving, reached his arm around the seat and smacked Kessie hard across the mouth. “Don’t talk back to me, young lady”

“Perfect!” Greg said, holding up a piece of paper, “What do you think Mark?”

“Wonderfully done Greg, nobody will think to check those false birth certificates!”

Kessie cried softly into her blanket and looked out the window as the lights of Montreal faded behind her. She whipped a little trickling blood off her mouth, “Mama...”

“Kessie...Connor” Raquella said, pacing back and forth in the small hotel room that the police had set them up with so they could continue their investigation.

“Wh...who could have taken our babies?” Lucilla said.

“Mark, really, please pull over, it is really starting to become gross back here...” Greg said, sniffing the air, “I think that Jordan needs a diaper.”

“It’s not Jordan... his name is Connor,” Kessie said, “And I really have to go to the potty, and I want something to eat, and something to drink! I’m hungry, I’m thirsty!”

“You are also going to be in pain, if you don’t shut up!” Mark hissed.

Kessie grew deathly quiet.

“Here’s a rest stop, it’s out of the way, Mark, please, can we get something here?” Tony said.

Mark nodded, “Here is good, Kessie, listen to me, if you so much as say anything, anything at all about who you really are or what your real name is, I am going to kill Connor, do you understand me?”

“MARK!” Greg hissed.

Mark shot him a glance, “It’s just to shut her up, don’t worry!” he smiled as he stopped the car and opened the door. He told Kessie, “Come on Cassandra, Uncle Greg will take you to the potty.”

“Yes, sir...” Kessie said as Greg opened the back door and lifted Connor out of the car seat and took them both inside.

“That’s a sweet, beautiful little girl you’ve got there,” A man on the other side of the gas pump tried to make casual conversation. “Where are you guys heading on this fine day?”

“Oh, we were just up here visiting some extended family, and now we are taking the long trip back down to the states now.” Mark smiled acting as if it normal, “That little one is my daughter, Cassandra, and the little boy is my friend’s son, Jordan.” He said to the guy.

“Oh... I didn’t see the little boy,” The man said.

Soon enough, they were back on the road. Mark’s nerves were grated by the man that was talking to him at the gas station.

Greg handed Kessie a small sleeve of powdered donuts and a small bottle of apple juice. “Here is your breakfast.”

“Is this juice organic, I can’t have refined sugars, Mommy says that its bad for me, we are vegetarians, we only eat fish once a week, I am not suppose to have milk products, I am lactose intolerance, I can’t have dairy products, they make me go poopy really bad, my Mommy gave me that through her genetics, whatever that is, and I can’t have peanuts, because they cause me to get all itchy, I don’t know what this white powdery stuff is, can’t I just have an apple and some whole grain toast instead?” Kessie continued talking as Mark pulled onto the freeway.

“Shut. Her. Up.” Mark glared at Greg, begging for relief from his upcoming headache.

“Cassandra...” Greg began.

“It’s Kessie, my name is Kessie!” Kessie began.

“Cassandra, your Mommy and Mama aren’t here, so guess what? You can eat whatever you want.” Greg said, handing Connor a bottle of botched formula.

“HEY!” Kessie began again. “Connor can’t have dairy products, he isn’t old enough yet, Mama breast feeds him, its healthier you know, I don’t like that bottle design, Mr. Man, why can’t you breast feed my brother, it wouldn’t make him so fussy and gassy. I still think that Connor shouldn’t drink milk products because they are bad.”

“Kessie” Mark warned.

“But I don’t know what these are...” Kessie said sweetly, holding up her donuts.

“They are donuts, just eat them” Greg sighed, getting agitated.

“No.”

Mark turned around and yelled at the girl, “Either you will eat those or you are going to STARVE!”

Kessie looked down, “Yes sir...” She grabbed the donut package and ripped it open, grabbing a powdery donut and eating it.

“Hey, Kessie...” Mark said after a while of driving.

“Yes, Sir?” Kessie was beginning to learn that calling him these respectful things would lessen the chance that he would yell at her.

“Call me Daddy.” Mark said, smirking.

“I don’t wanna call you Daddy.” Kessie shot back.

“Call me Daddy, kid.” Mark said, starting to get a little mad.

“But Mommy and Mama say that I am a very special little girl and I don’t need a Daddy because I two Mommies that love me and shower me with affection.”

“That diet you explained to me doesn’t sound much like lots of love and affections.” Greg said, making a face at Mark.

“Look, Cassandra, just call me Daddy.” Mark said.

“I’d rather not,” Kessie said.

“Cassandra...” Mark warned.

“My name is not Cassandra, it’s Kessie, and I want my Mommy, I want my Mama!”

“Hey...” Greg said, showing Mark something in his hand he picked up from the gas station.

“Yes, please do...” Mark begged, as Connor yawned and dropped his bottle onto the floor. He was so sleepy he wasn’t aware of what was going on.

“Hey,” Kessie said. “Connor needs his medicine!”

“Oh? What does Jordan take?” Greg said, filling a needle with both a strong cough medicine.

“CONNOR takes special vitamins to help him grow, he doesn’t produce enough calcium and is sick.”

“Your friend is sick?” Greg said, glancing at Kessie.

“Yeah, he has some illness...” Kessie said.

Greg shrugged and stabbed the small girl in the arm with the needle. She screeched so bad Mark almost crashed the car.

“That should keep her quiet for a good while.” Greg said as Kessie yawned and rubbed her arm.

Raquella and Lucilla had given their best descriptions to the cops of Mark and Greg. Charlie helped them by showing them picture I.D. cards that the men had left at work. Neither of them showed at work, like the cops were hoping for.

\"Raq...\"

\"Hmm? Yeah Lucilla?\"

\"Haven’t you slept any?\"

\"No, have you?\"

\"No.\"

\"I just can’t stop thinking about why someone would take Connor and Kessie...\" Raq said, sitting at the garage’s waiting room. Then she opened up her wallet and looked at the pictures of her babies.

\"They’ve only been gone for less than twenty four hours...\" Lucilla said.

***

Hours later, Mark and Greg were almost to the Canada/U.S. border. They had made passport and fake birth certificates and all for the children.

\"Drug her...\" Mark said, \"We are about ten minute away from the border, and she should be asleep by then.”

\"What about Jordan?\"

\"He’s sound asleep, don’t drug him.\"

\"NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO!\" Kessie screamed as Greg filled the needle and shot her in the arm with the cough medicine. She bit him.

\"Ouch!\" Greg said.

\"Ha!\" Kessie laughed as she started to fall asleep.

They got to border control and handed the passports and such over, the passport guide looked at Kessie and Connor asleep in the backseat.

\"Can I see some I.D. for your children sir?\" The man asked Mark. Mark handed over the fake birth certificates.

\"Hmm....\" The cop said. \"Indiana huh? You guys have a long way to go before your little ones can rest in their own beds... hurry along now.\"

Mark continued on as the cop walked into his office and sat down to open the stack of mail, in it was the letter to be on the lookout for Greg and Mark.

\"That was close...\" Greg said.

\"Yep, and now, we are in the U.S. of A. And nothing is going to stop us!

***
Four days had passed and Raquella and Lucilla hadn’t slept except for when they passed out from exhaustion. They were desperate to find their babies. One morning the telephone rang.

\"Who is it?\" Lucilla asked,

\"It’s the Today show in New York, they want us to come on...\"

\"We could, it might help us find Connor and Kessie...\"

***
Two days later, Raquella and Lucilla were talking on the Today show, begging the men to bring Kessie and Connor back safely and not to harm them.

Raquella was particularly emotional on the television, not having cried much the first week after the children were taken from their beds.
***
At this same time, Mark and Greg were in Illinois, taking their sweet time across the states, thinking that they had gotten away with kidnaping.

\"Let’s stop here for the night.\" Mark said as he pulled his car into a cheap hotel parking lot.
