Eleven

“The thugs burst through the door and dropped Lysande’s father in an unceremonious heap at her feet. Miklos was blubbering and crying; almost totally incoherent. He managed to relay what he had done between gasps and hiccups before completely losing consciousness.

“The same two thugs escorted Lysande to the gambling hall; her new home. She stepped through the doorway with her head held high, as if she owned all she surveyed. She had made up her mind that she would not go into this meekly or show any fear, making a bad situation even worse. The thugs led her to the hall’s keeper, Andras.

“Upon seeing Lysande, Andras knew at once that she would be far too much trouble to keep an eye on at the hall. He sent one of the thugs off with a whispered message to Ersebet, the owner of an upscale brothel about 50 kilometers to the northeast. Two days later, Lysande was sold into prostitution for easily 20 times what her father had made in the last 3 years!

“Ersebet was all too happy to have another girl under her “employ” and immediately set about preparing the girl for her new life. Of course, Lysande was terrified. The other girls saw this and did their best to try and comfort her. They taught her how to separate her mind from her body, if for no other reason that to save her sanity and her dignity.

“Lysande soon became one of Ersebet’s most sought after “ladies,” working under the name of “Smoke.”

“She had been working for Ersebet for about five years, when she and I met for the first time.”

It seemed as though we had been dancing for hours as he told me the tale of Lysande. I couldn’t believe my ears as I heard her tragic story, and yet, I hadn’t heard it all. I was anxious to hear more, but I was growing weary of this grand party. Ladislao sensed this and kissed me on my temple as we danced.

He whispered in to my hair, “Soon we will be alone, my love….very soon.”

Before we could exit the dance floor, Lysande stepped up as if on cue, “May I have this dance?”

I started to step away so that she may dance with Ladislao, when she put her hand on my shoulder. I was surprised to say the least.

“I thought you wanted to dance with Ladislao,” I said.

“No, my dear, it is you with whom I should like to dance. I have had the pleasure of being Ladislao’s partner many times, but not with you…….”

Where there is Smoke there must surely be Fire……
