Fishdream

“You should see your daughter out there,” Grandma Aultmon said into the phone as she peaked through the blinds. Jett had just pulled up to drop Janese off.

“Today was amazing,” Janese said. Jett kissed her in agreement. “I don’t want you to leave.” She clutched him around his neck.

“Baby, I don’t want to go either, believe me,” Jett said, nuzzling their faces together. “But it’s eleven forty-five and we can’t spend the night together.” Janese kissed Jett on his forehead . Then all the way down to his chin. “I’m gonna be miserable next week,” he mumbled with their lips still slightly together.

“Baby, just because we can’t see each other doesn’t mean we’re not together,” Janese said. Jett smiled and rubbed her shoulders.

“Let’s go inside. I want to see Grandma Aultmon before I go.” Janese led him into the house.

“I gotta go, they’re coming,” Grandma Aultmon said, hanging up the phone. “Hey, how’s my grandbaby-in-law?” She and Jett had grown close over the summer.

“Hey mama,” he said, hugging her. “I’m just dropping Nessie off. We’ve only been dating about a month and you’re already claiming me,” Jett said.

“I know. You two are closer than you actually think,” Grandma Aultmon said, looking at the two. You have no idea, Jett thought. “I fell asleep earlier today and I had a fishdream.” Jett suddnely felt faint. “What yall two staring at me like that for? You got something to worry about?”

“No grandma,” Janese said.

“Yea,” Jett said, waving his hand. “We’re just surprised that someone may be pregnant. I’m curious about who it is. Aren’t you baby?”

“Yea,” Janese agreed.

“Nessie, walk me to the door. ‘Night ma,” Jett said, putting his arm around Janese. When they were out on the porch they just stood there. Jett grabbed his head with his hands and looked up at the night sky.

“Jett, there is no way that I could be pregnant! We just had sex earlier today and we used protection,” Janese shouted.

“Baby you gotta keep it down! She didn’t say you specifically. It could be anybody in your family or mine,” Jett whispered, grabbing Janese by her arms. “When are you supposed to start your period?” She closed her eyes to think.

“Tomorrow or the day after,” she answered.

“Okay, if you don’t start then, we’ll get a pregnancy test.”

“J wha what if I’m pregnant,” Janese asked, on the verge of tears.

“I’m not ready to be a father, I know that. But if you are gonna have my baby then I’m gonna be there for you. Every step of the way, I promise. You’ll have the best.” Janese gave him a smile and a kiss. “I gotta go, but I’ll call you in the morning and we’ll get together and go to the beach. Since we couldn’t do it today.”

“Okay, goodnight.” They kissed one another goodnight and Janese watched Jett drive away. Hopefully not forever.
