Interlude: Birth of the Sun
Hello! Now, you may be asking yourself who in the hay these random name's belong to, and what it means when they're referenced. Well, fear not! I'm including Interludes throughout the story, that break away from the actual plot and POV of Tal, and serve purely as historical references that will continue to pop up throughout the series. NOW, they may not always be myths-- but sometimes take the form as short narratives in their own rights, but they'll always be relatively short. I hope you enjoy!
When Ivai’ell had created men, he became truly aware of how different they were than anything else he had created. Unlike the elven kin, they could not be in the dark for too long— for they would forget how to see, and would wilt into themselves, too blind to stay awake. And unlike the dwarves he had created and so loved, they could hardly stand to be in the light of day for too long, their bodies would become sluggish and worn, barely able to move. This greatly concerned Ivai’ell, for men had been his favorite creation since the elves-- he had longed for many eras to create a worthy kin of them, and the delightful differences between the two was new and grand. So he sought to find harmony for the men so that they could flourish and continue to delight him, just as his other creations had. Ivai’ell had heard of Sali’ni’s of wisdom, and sought the Moon goddess for counsel, knowing how harmonized her creations were with each other. Sali’ni showed him how she had created the Moon and the Ocean together, thus ensuring they could always find balance in the Universe. She had devised the spirit of the Ocean to match the spirit of the Moon, for without the Moon— the Ocean would wash away the land, or sink into the ground. And without the Ocean, the Moon would begin to push and pull on the living creatures, hindering their survival. Ivai’ell begged her to help him create a balance for men, as well as all his other creations. Sali’ni agreed on three conditions that he was made to swear to, and together they created the Sun; which would allow the living creatures on earth to find balance within themselves and the environment and continue to flourish and delight their creator, creating cycles of action and rest, sleep and awakeness. As it goes, the Sun would rise and fall each day, to allow each creation an ample amount of time for rest and exertion, granting them the ability to thrive. Ivai’ell was grateful, and swore to uphold Sali’ni’s conditions, on grounds that the Moon goddess would be allowed to smite the race of men if he failed to comply. Twice a year, the sun was to be covered by the moon in the day, to remind the creations of Sali’ni’s wisdom. During the day, the light from the Sun was to not completely block out the ability to see the Moon, in reminder of Sali’ni’s guidance. Her third and final condition, was that if men lay themselves extinct, for she predicted they were powerful and clever beings, she would take back the sun and keep it from the world-- for she had helped create it-- to remind them of her harmony. And if Ivai’ell failed to uphold his oath to her, she would slay both the men and the sun, to remind them of her power and strength. And so the birth of the Sun from their union began the Era of Men, with Ivai’ell and Sali’ni to guide it.
