Let's start somewhere!

“Ok breath In,” Ellie took a deep breath in as she grimace at the pain she felt as Angie folded her leg slowly. “breath out,” Ellie exhaled as she felt relief in the muscle as it went back straight.

“Good job, I know the pain is a bitch but if you can continue at a good pace, the sooner I can have you standing.” Angie smiled at her as she encouraged her and switch legs again.

Ellie was staring intently to the back wall of the bed, she was focused on the sailboat. That was her consolation, that little sailboat standing in a middle of a deadly storm.

She breathed in and out following Angie's directions.

Angie alternated with lifting her leg straight up and then bending it at the knee were she would put her knees to her chest.

Angie explained that she was trying to get rid of the rigidity that the body had accustomed itself in the weeks she was in the hospital.

Ellie liked Angie she was always upbeat joking an helping her through the pain. The first week had consisted of just lifting her legs, now the second week she was moving into a little more movement.

Ellie glanced her head to the side to see Maggie sitting outside Mel's room facing into the room she was in. Mel's door was open and Ellie could clearly see her typing away frantically on her desktop.

“Hey Ellie enough of la la land, I need you focused.” Ellie shook her head.

“Sorry, I dozed out,” Ellie smiled at her as Angie helped her sit up in bed, Angie raised Ellie's feet on a foam pad.

“I'm trying to control the blood flow before I help you onto your wheelchair,” Ellie nodded as she glanced up to see Maggie staring intently at them.

One of the rules that Mel had implemented was that Maggie was not to be in the room when Ellie was doing physio, “Let me get ya a glass of water, it's time for your medication. I'll give you a little time to gawk at your eye candy.” With that Angie winked and walked out.

Ellie smiled at Angie's carefree attitude, and glance again to see pass Maggie and saw Mel who was drinking water and looking at Ellie's direction.

“are you okay honey?” Ellie snapped her head to the side to see Maggie looking at her worriedly, “she's not pushing you too hard is she?” Maggie glanced to the side seeing if Angie was returning as she got up to step foot in the room.

“HEY!,” Mel shouted as Maggie turned around to glare at her, Mel tapped her wrist indicating that it still wasn't time for Maggie to interrupt Ellie.

Just as Maggie was about to retort, Angie showed up again.

“sorry about that,” Angie smiled as she glanced back to see Maggie, she smiled at her and Maggie feigned politeness and smiled back.

“well how are you feeling, do your legs hurt more or less?” Angie asked as she sat next to Ellie on the bed and was feeling Ellie's pulse.

“Well I feel my lower back hurting more,” Ellie admitted as she placed the empty cup of water on the nightstand.

“Ok, that means your tired of laying down the majority of the time. So what we have to do is have you on the chair, so you can move around more and start building up your upper body strength.” Ellie nodded as she glanced at the contraption that was in the room with her. She had been told to be on bed rest the first week when she was back home but now she was actually looking forward to being in the chair.

Angie took a clipboard out of her back pack wrote the daily exercise and the pills that Ellie had taken. “Ok How about we get ya in that chair and you can spend the rest of the day in it, but you need someone to push you for now ok.” Angie smiled as she brought the chair closer and Ellie nodded indicating she was ready. Angie was strong, effortlessly she lifted Ellie up and swung her to the side and sat her on the chair.

“here,” Angie pulled out a tennis looking ball and handed it to Ellie, "squeeze it every once in a while and alternate hands. Start building up some strength ok.”

“all right then,” Ellie took it and squeeze it but realized she could barely dented it.

“It's not a soft ball ok?” Angie laughed as Ellie tried again, “Man I am weak, my upper body strength is shot.” Ellie chuckled as Angie wrote again. “Ok I'll be back by seven to give ya that bath this evening ok.”

Ellie bit her lower lip a little as she thought about bathing, the first week it was extremely uncomfortable being naked in front of a stranger, but when it came to that Angie was very polite and professional.

“Ok then, see you later.” Angie patted Ellie's shoulders and bend low to whisper, “good luck,” Ellie looked up to see her mom standing by the doorway.

“Yeah thanks,” Ellie chuckled as she bid farewell, Angie stopped shy of Mel's doorway and Mel looked up and mouthed thanks and waved bye as Angie went on to her next appointment.

“Come on Ellie lets go the rec room?” I looked up, my roommate was lying on her bed. She was playing with a tennis ball as she threw it up in the air and caught it.

“I don't know,” I replied, I closed my textbook, I hadn't been to one of the rec room get together. From what I had heard it was the most innocent fun in the dorms. Compare to the frat parties and binge drinking, this was more safe way to be.

Of course I had decline before because Justin had come over to visit but it was over and I still didn't feel like interacting with others as much.

Ellie looked up and notice she was still alone, “Fuck,” she cursed as she flipped back some pages. It was pretty boring what she was reading so she just assume nothing important had happened. Now she was flipping the pages fast as she notice a pages oddly crumble, she then realized the page was once wet.

October 30 1998

I lay in bed facing up, the sheets covered me past my chest and Justin's back was facing mine, I felt dirty somehow, I turned to glanced at his naked figured. I stole most of the blanket trying to hide. My roommate was out. Something wasn't right, my gut told me so. Justin flipped over and placed an arm over my stomach and just his touch repulsed me. To the point of nauseousness.

“babe?” Justin called me sleepy, I just 'hmm' in response.

“you ok?” he kissed my neck and I turned away, not really wanting contact.

“Yeah I'm just thinking.” I stared intently at the bulletin board ahead of me, “Hey guess who I ran into before I came over here?”

“Lucas?” I guessed as I turned to my side facing away from him.

“no your mom,” he said as he scooted closer.

There it was, that feeling in my gut, my mother. “You know, she does have a point,” he laughed as I felt his growing erection again at my backside. I groaned in disgust.

“what point will that be?” I spat back as I sat up and took the sheets with me, “you know the one were your being a little bit irrational and not speaking to her,” Justin sat up too and looked around for his clothes.

“Irrational she's the one who decline to speak to me when I left, I came back to the house twice trying to make amends and all I got was a cold shoulder and a death glare.” I found my underwear and graciously slipped into it.

“yeah but she said your the one that just left abruptly.” I gawked at him as he zipped up his jeans. “are you fucking kidding me? Your here on behalf of my mother what the fuck Justin.”

“Hey don't get mad at me, I'm just passing the message.”

“yeah the messenger usually gets shot you know.” I shoved my shirt on and looked at him with disgust. He was putting his shirt on as he looked around for his belt.

“hey you have to understand finding out your only son takes it in the ass can make any mother go a bit nuts.”

“Don't you dare use Lucas as an Excuse for my mothers irrational behavior, she could of taken it better and not act like the end of the world. I was not going to stay in a house and be manipulated by her.” I opened my door walking out I could not stand this. The last thing I needed was to be reminded by my mothers 'weird' behavior and her extreme denial.

That was what pissed me off the most, her denial about Lucas.

“Hey don't you walk away from me,” Justin ran up to me and twirled me around by the arm. “How cliché,” I took his hand off my arm as I continue to walk away. I then suddenly felt the wind from my lungs be knocked out.

Justin has pushed me into the wall, “ I told you-,”

“leave her alone,” we both turned to see a dark brunette woman, and my roommate Haley.

Haley ran towards me as she helped me up.

The other girl stood in front of me, “I think it be best if you leave now,”

Justin glared at her, “this is between Ellie and me,” he took a step towards her trying to intimidate her.

“Justin,” I manage to squeak out my voice was gone, I was trembling. I had gone into shock.

“Leave and don't come back or we're calling the cops.”

“I'm not fucking afraid of a couple of dykes,” before I could even blink she had struck Justin open palm straight up his nose. Justin fell on his knee with blood spurting from his nose. He shrieked as he fell on the floor.

“come on,” Haley pulled me up as she escorted me back to the room. As we walked by Haley muttered, “Thanks Mel call ya later.”

Ellie looked up from her diary as she saw Mel come through the front door. Her and Maggie had decided to go grocery shopping well mostly Mel's ideas, since Mel realized Ellie really wanted to be alone to read. So Mel sucked it up and spend the past hour with Maggie.

Mel juggle a couple of grocery bags as she walked towards the kitchen. Behind her was Maggie as she brought some bags of bread and milk.

“Hi honey,” she greeted as Mel had re-emerge and took the bags Maggie had.

“How's the reading going?” she asked as she sat on the couch close to Ellie. Maggie eyed the book, the damn book, she disliked Ellie remembering their trouble past. She had a shot of fixing things and Mel had ruined it for her. Mel passed by and notice Ellie had two fingers in different parts of the book. “Skimming through it will only take twice as long to read. I don't know how you read textbook in college like that. Must have taken an eternity.”

Mel walked outside again as Maggie smiled tenderly at her. “how are you feeling?” Maggie asked as she patted Ellie's head. “I'm okay mom, I'm adjusting well.”

Mel finally came back to the room as she looked at Maggie, “did you call Lucas and tell him to come over to fix my heater before he went to that construction convention?”

Maggie shook her head, “I wasn't going to bother him with a silly thing like that, if its too cold here Ellie can always come over and stay with us.” Maggie looked at Ellie and Ellie sucked on her lower lip and smiled forcefully. 'oh mother' Ellie thought.

“Fuck Magdalene,” Mel ran her finger through her hair in frustration. "Language Melissa," Maggie retorted. “Maggie we're in winter season my fucking heater decide to break down all of a sudden. I just needed to know if it was worth fixing or I invest in a new one.”

Maggie was about to speak, “No, it was one measly favor I asked you. The hell Maggie I try to be civilized to you but you you...” Mel closed her eyes, “get out.” Maggie smiled at Ellie as she patted her leg. “Call me if you need anything.”

Ellie smiled halfheartedly, “OK,” Ellie looked back at a frustrated Mel as she was close to tears from the anger that was boiling inside her.

Ellie extended her hand out and grabbed Mel's. 'you broke Justin nose,' Ellie thought and smiled as she realized Mel was staring at her.

“I'm not sure what happened but when I woke up this morning the heater was off,” Mel made small talk as she sat down, still holding hands.

“yeah it was unusually chilly this morning,” Ellie bit her lower lip as she rubbed her chin with her free hand.

“what is it?” Mel asked as she tucked a loose strand of hair behind Ellie's ear.

Ellie smiled, “Predictable am I?”

“You tend to do these weird face expression when your pondering how your gonna ask me something, so ask.” Mel glanced at the clock hanging on the far side of the wall, it was close to four in the afternoon and she hadn't prepared anything for dinner yet.

“Do you know whose Justin is?” Ellie asked as she held her breath, why she did that she had no clue, but she saw Mel's eyes move rapidly as Mel raised an eyebrow in realization.

“Yeah I remember Justin, he was your ex” Mel let go of Ellie's hand as she got behind the wheelchair and wheeled her into the dinning room.

“Oh,” Ellie said as she realized she was in front of the table and Mel was walking to the kitchen.

December 12, 1998

“So Rec room?” Haley asked as she noticed I was frowning, “look its been a months with that deal with Justin you really need to get out more.” Haley threw the ball at my head.

“Ow you bitch fine Let's go,”

We walked down the stairs to the rec room, it was calm, some people were playing ping pong other were playing Foosball and someone was playing a upbeat melody on the piano.

“all right people divide your self into two group,” a guy wearing a bright orange shirt stood on top of one of the sofas as people scramble around trying to make groups even. Then the sofas were move to the middle and some chairs were added. “all right group one goes first last three people standing goes into ultimate show down, of EXTREME MUSICAL CHAIRS!!!”

“Haley what the fuck is going on so much for clean fun,” I hissed in her ear as I looked around there were sixty people, thirty in each group.

“Hey just go with the flow ok”

“Hey Ms. Melancholy,” the guy in orange shouted to the person on the piano.

I looked to see Mel flipped him off as she started to play very fast up beat.

The first group ran around suddenly Mel stopped playing. There was a ton of shoving and pushing and cussing and I couldn't help but laugh.

Five people were out, “all right here come the extreme part,” the leader of this rendezvous and another guy move the two sofas out of the way and only three chairs were left.

They erupted and cheered as Mel once again started playing even faster now, some tripped as they ran around and suddenly it went quiet as some dove for the chair other yanked each other out of the way.

My sides were hurting as I looked at Haley, “I'm not doing this the last thing I need is a black eye.”

“Oh come on,” Haley called me as I walked towards the piano.

“I didn't know you played,” I leaned on the piano as Mel smiled shyly at me, “well frankly the only thing you know about me is my name.” Mel looked away as she blushed madly I sat next to her and whacked her on the arm.

“Don't be a smart ass,” I chided as I saw Mel looked up when the sofas and chairs had been reseted for the next group.

“Sorry,” she mumbled.

Ever since she saved me from Justin, we really have not had a chance to talk, only the occasional hi and bye as we ran into each other in the lobby.

“GO,” Mel looked up as she nodded and started playing, her finger flawlessly flew across the piano as she chose the higher pitch notes and played fast then I heard her mumble.

“Un Dos Tres,” then she stopped.

“Spanish?” I asked as she nodded.

“Third generation Spaniard,” she said as she rubbed her eyes.

“Spain interesting, my ancestry isn't as glamorous all I know is that my great great grandfather was from England and my great great grandmother from Ireland.”

“you don't call Ireland glamorous shame on you,” Mel looked up again as once again the game was reseted.

She played faster this time and for a while and finally just let her finger off the keys.

“Since when have you been playing the piano?”

“I think I started when I was eleven, I'm pretty good with my hands,”

“I bet,” I winked at her and then I went wide eye as she blushed madly.

“Oh god I'm sorry I said as I touched her arm.” She was looking away trying to hide her red face.

“It's fine it's fine,” she mumbled as I scolded myself. I was flirting shamelessly with another woman and what was worse it came so naturally.

Ellie looked up smiling widely, she felt giddy for some reason as she read when she and Mel first started to interact. “All right I hope your in the mood for chicken soup, It'll keep ya warm.”

Mel set a bowl in front of Ellie as Ellie set aside her book and took the spoon on the side.

“smells good,” she complimented as Mel brought her own bowl and sat next to her, Mel brought half a loaf of french bread out.

“thanks,” she tore a piece off as she ate.

Ellie sipped a little as she spooned out some rice at the bottom.

“this is really good,” Ellie commented suddenly as she tore a piece of bread too and practically moaned as she ate. The previous meals she had ate were made by her mother but Mel's food was good.

“Man you are good with your hands,” Ellie said as Mel chocked suddenly.

“sorry that was unexpected,” Mel said as she sipped some water.

“I was reading about that day in the rec room where we first talk,” Ellie said as she found a piece of chicken and smiled.

“you like cooking?” Ellie asked as Mel shrugged her shoulders, “I like cooking certain foods,” Mel said as she picked up the bowl to drink the soup.

“Hey Mel Ummm,” Ellie played with her food. She wanted to ask why they exactly didn't sleep in the same room. It felt odd sleeping alone. Her body felt something missing. Yeah maybe she was having difficulty remembering her, but if they had been a couple for such a long time, shouldn't they be sleeping in the same bed, for better or for worse till death us part kind of deal, Ellie thought.

“I'll try and fix the heater myself, I won't send you off to Maggie. God knows she probably replay all your baby 8mm videos she has of you and bored you with the endless albums she has.”

“Yeah,” Ellie nodded as they ate in silence. Mel looked around for the time and realized it was close to seven and Angie would be back soon.
