The Hospital
Ten: The Hospital
(Characters belong to me and Azathoia, and please read his story “Only the Heart Knows Why, Quax’s Days”)
I hate hospitals, but I have to stay. I need to make sure Quax is going to be okay. The waiting room is full of crying and pacing people at this hour. Doctors are walking around everywhere, a couple of nurses are just chatting away at the desk. Do they seriously get paid to goof off like this? “I want my mommy!”
I glance over at the little girl sitting with her dad, tears flowing freely from her eyes. Something bad must have happened then… I walk over to them and smile at the girl. “Hello there. Is your mommy sick?”
“Yes,” she cries, hugging onto her dad more. “She broke the car…”
“I see. She must be really hurt then, huh?”
“Uh huh.” She’s so adorable.
“Then be strong for her and your dad, alright? Pray for her to get better.” I’m not religious, but maybe they are. The girl nods at me and climbs off her dad to give me a hug. It feels so strange getting hugged by a complete stranger like this, especially a little child, but I hug her back anyway.
“Do you think Mommy will go to God?” she asks me, still holding on. I can feel her tears start to soak through my shirt.
“Maybe… hopefully tonight isn’t her time to go.” I continue to talk with the girl and her father a little bit more, learning some interesting things about their family. The girl’s dad graduated at the top of his class, getting some degree in business and the girl’s mother is actually a nurse here. She was struck by drunk driver on her way home. The little girl is going to be in kindergarten next fall.
After a while of chatting with them, a nurse walks up to them. I tune out what she says, going back over to my seat. I can only hope it’s good news. Eventually, though, I start to get edgy. I keep to myself for awhile, watching others come and go. There’s still no update on Quax’s condition…
I look up when a couple walks over to the desk, a young boy holding a damp rag in his hand, and then I notice the blood dripping from above his eyes. He only wipes it away with the rag. I walk over to him and take the rag, holding it firmly to his wound. “You should keep it here,” I tell him. “Don’t just put it up when you think you should. Keep it there.” His mother watches me to make sure I don’t take him away. It’s best not to make a scene here, Lady. After awhile, the boy is able to see the doctor, and he turns back to me before leaving, saying a quiet “Thank you.” I smile after him and look at my hands. Ugh, I hate blood… I find the nearest restroom and go in, washing my hands thoroughly with the soap and water. I’m not convinced that they’re clean until the tenth round.
I sigh as I go back out to the waiting room, and I see a couple more kids. They’re all freaking out too. Maybe I can keep myself calm by helping all of them feel better.

“Hello, Kanau?”
I open my eyes and look up at the person in the white jacket. When did I fall asleep? “What is it?” I ask her, stretching out a bit. Man, that feels good.
“Your friend is asking for you,” she tells me. I merely just nod and stand up, walking with her down the many halls. “I noticed that you’re great with children,” she says.
“Great?” I don’t know about that.
“Have you ever considered being a pediatrician?”
“No thanks. I hate places like this,” I confess, trying to avoid looking in any of the rooms.
“Aw, but the kids love you.” She smiles at me and I just look away from her, down at the floor. “Maybe just think about it a bit more.”
“Uh huh…”
Finally we come to Quax’s room, and I walk in, looking down at him. So many machines are hooked up to him. I can feel myself go pale just looking at him, and he sees me and smiles, so I can’t just leave now. I go over and sit in a chair beside the bed. “How are you feeling?”
“A little better…”
I smile and reach down to take his hand in mine. He seems to really like that; I’m not surprised. “I’m glad you called me last night, Quax…”
“Yeah…” He shifts a little in his bed. “It wasn’t a fun night.”
“No it wasn’t.” I yawn a bit. I’m so exhausted now that the adrenaline rush is completely gone. Now that I know he’ll be alright, I just want to sleep, but I can’t, not yet.
I glance at him to see him watching me. “You’re really tired, huh…?”
“Don’t worry about me, Quax.”
He frowns lightly. “I can and I will,” he whispers.
I chuckle a little at that. “Then go ahead and worry, but don’t get sick over me.”
“Aww…”
I lean back in the chair and we talk a little bit more about this and that. I successfully avoid talking about the comment he made to me the night before, when he confessed his love to me. I’ll just pretend it never happened for now. There’s no point in making him feel nervous about it or anything. He had a horrible night, and I won’t make it worse now. His hand is still in mine as I rest my eyes, and I think we both fall asleep like this…
(NOTE: Like our characters? Wanna read about others we've created through roleplay? Introducing our new Tainted Rose series. My own stories are Tainted Rose, Gemini's Corruption and Tainted Rose, Ereth's Passion. Azathoia's stories are Tainted Rose, Beaui-Lein's Redemption and Tainted Rose, Ikkaku's Deception. We hope you read and enjoy those as well as we go through our notes to continue on with this one. Have a nice day!)
