She topped a small hill and saw a short distance away a town. She sighed in relief. She was tired and sore from walking day after day. Winding down the other side she approached the village. On the short bridge leading into the town a decapitated head of a troll stood at the end of a pike. She grimaced at the site, but continued into the small town.
The first thing she needed to know is if they had seen the champion. Approaching the first shop she came to, she inquired.

"Excuse me?’

“Everything is extra cheap. Get your goods very cheap, our town is saved” the middle aged shop owner shouted as he raised his mead to every bystander. He looked down at the young girl. “Here take this” He handed her a horn with mead. “On the house!”

"Well thank you, sir" She took a long drink. It tasted wonderful. Licking her lips."You said your town was saved? How? If I may ask? "

“Have you ever seen a troll? Wild creatures, did you know they like to eat children? Anyway, all our attempts to kill the creature had failed and most of the families in town was about ready to leave when a very large man came to our hall and claimed himself to be the answer to our problems” the man drank of his own mead. “At first we didn’t believe him and most of us laughed at him. Then we discovered that he was actually one of the worse monsters in the land” he stopped for a moment as he sold a trinket to an elderly woman.

She stopped drinking her mead and stared at him. "He killed the Troll? So he was here. Do you know where he went from here and how long ago? "
“Well…” he leaned closer. “As we were about strike the beast down, none of our weapons had any effect. We were at his mercy. Then the strangest thing happened” he wanted to wait a little to answer her questions after he told the story.

She just smiled. She should have known the tale would be told. Finding a free stool she sat down and waited to hear what had taken place.

“He just left the town… Most of us sighed in relief when he went off. Three days later he came back and he had the head of the troll in his arms. You might have seen it on your way in to town; it is mounted on a pike to signal any other trolls who try anything that we were saved by a troll slayer. Once he threw the head on the hall floor, he just turned and left. He didn’t even stop to join in the festivities”

"I see. I am very glad he was able to rid you of the problem. Did anyone see which way he went?”

“I’m afraid not. For such a big guy, he moves amazingly fast. You want to buy something? ” he asked.

"Yes he does, Perhaps on the marrow. Do you know of a place I may rest tonight? "

“We have an inn just down the road from here. Famous for their secret recipe mead”

"My thanks." She stood and made her way down to the inn to secure her bed for the night.
