Chapter 10: Death
Chapter 10: Death
Matt sat in the darkness, letting the silence wrap around his senses, wanting the world to disappear. His body hurt. He felt drained and suddenly very young and naïve and for the first time in his life as a cop, Matt knew if he had his gun he would end it all here. He closed his eyes and felt the hot tears sting at his eyelids as his memories tormented him again. Ezra and Warren had found him in the basement sitting staring at the dead boy. Matt shuddered as the scene unfolded within his mind...
***
Ezra stood at the top of the stairs pain clearly etched across his face. He had slowly descended, moving casually towards Matthew. He noticed that Matt was frozen, his eyes seemed impossibly large. Matt didn’t even make any move to acknowledge his presence as he approached. He felt a hot pain in his chest as he saw Matt was gripping the dead boy’s hand.
‘Matthew, what are you doing down here? Ho-‘
Ezra was stopped as Matt lunged across the room at him, pinning him to the damp wall. Green eyes were dark and flashing with anger that Ezra had never seen before. Ezra knew in that one moment that Matthew wanted to hurt him, to kill him. Ezra felt his heart break, everything he had done was for Matthew and now the human hated him.
Matt had seen the vampire crumble in front of him. A slump appeared in his body that had not been there earlier. His face turned to a cold marble and his eyes to empty stone. His cold hands slowly reached up and took a hold of Matt’s wrists forcing him to let go. While Matt had been held momentarily still by Ezra, their eyes locked onto one another, before Ezra broke the gaze and pushed Matt away from him.
‘Warren,’ Ezra’s voice held a broken, hurt note to it, ‘please deal with this.’
Matt felt his mind break, everything he had been through, and everything those boys had suffered and now the monster responsible was just planning to walk away? He could not let that happen. Raising his hand he brought it forward as if to strike Ezra, when strong arms encircled his waist and turned him away from the other man.
‘Let go! Come back here! You killed them! You’re a monster! Do you hear me? You’ll pay Ezra!’
Matt struggled uselessly as Ezra disappeared into the manor, leaving him and Warren alone in the darkness. Matt felt Warren lift him and carry him to the empty cell that stood hidden in the corner of the room. Matt was thrown in, his hands and knees taking most of the impact. He felt the hard stone cut into his palms. A loud metallic click confirmed that he would not escape this time. Turning, he felt his eyes burn with anger.
Warren stood, a cruel smile played on his face as he wrapped long pale fingers around the dark bars.
‘Thank you Matthew, you played your part beautifully.’
Matt was confused, he didn’t understand. ‘My master needs me, after all his ‘beloved,’ the word was spat at Matt, ‘has just discovered he is a true monster.’
Warren backed away, a smile on his face, until he too disappeared into the light leaving Matt alone with just the ghosts of the boys to keep him company...
***
Matt now knew what Warren meant as he slid down the damp wall. Warren had told him about the boys. He had known that Matt would have to see for himself. Warren had planned everything and Matt like an idiot, followed him. Tears burned Matt’s eyes but he refused to cry. The boy’s dead body was gone and he was alone. Suddenly he wished that Ezra were there. He shook his head and barked out a harsh laugh. I really am in trouble if I’m starting to miss that monster. Matt closed his eyes and let the silent darkness lull him to an uneasy sleep.
***
Ezra stood in Matt’s room. The boy’s scent clung to everything. Ezra breathed deeply, he could almost taste Matt on his tongue and a burning desire filled his body. He wanted Matthew. A noise behind him made him turn. Warren stood in the doorway, and the last of the sun’s rays framed his body making him appear like an angel.
‘Master, why do you hurt yourself like this? That human doesn’t care, he doesn’t understand us.’ Ezra turned away from Warren, refusing to answer. He didn’t care if Matt didn’t understand him, but he couldn’t stand the thought that Matt didn’t care for him. He breathed deeply as Warren’s arms slipped around his waist and his pet nuzzled his neck, lips brushing against his ear.
‘I am here master. Tell me what you want and I’ll do it.’
‘Anything, my pet?’
‘Yes Master.’
Ezra heard the eager words; he could almost feel Warren’s need seep into his body. Closing his eyes Ezra felt the cold anger raise over his skin.
‘Remove yourself from my sight.’
He felt Warren stiffen before suddenly a hand gripped his shirt and spun him around. Red eyes glowed and bore into his own. Ezra felt fear for one second and then rage at Matt’s actions and Warren’s behaviour. Ezra let go of his rational half, letting the animal rage that resided within him take over. His fingers bent and nails grew, his eyes bled a deep crimson and his fangs extended, pushing his gums back and pressing into his lower lip. All his senses climbed to new heights.
His hand shot out and gripped Warren’s throat, enjoying the feel of the pulse fluttering against his hand and the fear that pressed against his senses. Ezra allowed his nails to break the soft skin and breathed deeply as the sweet coppery aroma filled the air.
He flung Warren across the room, watching as the other vampire hit the wall. Small hairline cracks appeared from the impact. Snarling, Ezra went to lunge at Warren but froze. A new scent entered him. He bared his fangs and let out a cat-like hiss before leaving the wounded vampire laid, bleeding, on the floor.
***
Light filtered into the darkness as the door above him squeaked open. Matt barely opened his eyes, as he didn’t care what they did to him now. He heard the sound of feet hitting the concrete steps and his eyes opened. The footfalls were heavy and uneven, unlike either of the vampires. He felt his eyes widen as the figure came into view, and his heart seemed to stop.
Jason’s face was red and his breathing laboured, as he ran over to Matt’s cage, large hands gripped the bars.
‘Matty, my boy! Are you ok?’
Matt didn’t speak. His mind felt as if it had been fried. Jason stood staring at him as if he was a prize, not like a piece of meat he had thrown to the dogs. Jason’s relieved smile seemed to waver and he coughed.
‘Matt I’m gonna get you out of here, just hang on, ok?’
Matt didn’t move. He watched in a numb silence as Jason began searching for a way to get him out. He barely noticed the cry that came from the older man.
‘Matt! I’ve got the key. Come on boy, it’s almost over.’
‘Why do you care?’ Matt’s voice was a harsh whisper that seemed to cut the older man like a knife.
Their eyes locked as Jason slid the key into the lock. Jason broke the stare and turned the key.
‘I never wanted this to happen to you kid. I don’t want to explain this now,’ Matt didn’t move as Jason moved towards him. He felt a warm hand touch his arm and then pull away in shock, ‘Christ Matt, you’re like ice! Here put this on…let’s get you home. Come one.’
Jason’s police jacket was draped over his shoulders and an arm pulled him up. He let Jason lead him to the open door, keeping his eyes to the floor. His head snapped up as a deep growl filled the room.
***
Ezra felt the rage control his body and he ran towards his beloved, another was daring to be near him. Another growl rumbled deep within his chest as the scent became stronger. He heard the voice of the intruder float from the basement. Without pausing, Ezra moved to the doorway peering into the darkness.
Matt was holding onto the other man, both turned away from Ezra’s vision. Seeing the man’s arm around Matt’s narrow waist was too much. The growl that emitted from him echoed around the stone walls. He watched as Matt and the other man looked up at him, Matt’s eyes locked on his. He heard Matt’s voice faintly, but it was too late to stop as he leaped towards the pair.
‘Ezra stop! Please, I wo...’
Ezra lunged at him. Matt closed his eyes and held his breath waiting for the pain to rip through him. A hard shove knocked Matt to the floor. His eyes flew open, Ezra held Jason by the throat, his lips were pulled back, baring white fangs.
‘Ezra no!’ Matt watched helplessly as time seemed to slow. He saw Ezra’s fingers tighten as he raised Jason off the floor. Ezra’s mouth opened wider, his fangs gleamed in the light. Matt tried to rise, knowing already it was too late. Jason’s eyes locked on his and a ghostly smile touched his lips as Ezra’s fangs tore into his throat. Matt felt the blood hit his face before he saw the darkness seeping from the animal-like bite. He watched as the life in Jason’s eyes flickered and darkened and as his body jerked against the vampire.
Matt watched in horrified silence as Ezra let Jason’s lifeless body fall to the floor. He couldn’t take his eyes off of the blood that slid down Ezra’s mouth and chin, which now stained his once white shirt. As Ezra moved towards him Matt crawled backwards until he felt the wall behind him. He wanted to scream, to run, to do anything, but his mind and body didn’t want to cooperate. Ezra grabbed him and pulled him to his feet, one of his arms snaked around his waist, hand resting on his right hip. The other hand shoot out, lightning fast, and Matt felt long fingers tangle into his soft hair. Ezra forced his face upwards, so that their eyes were locked. Matt didn’t see him move but suddenly felt Ezra’s blood covered lips press fiercely against his own. Matt tried to push away. He gagged as the taste of blood filled his mouth and tears streamed down his face, as the vampire’s tongue caressed the inside of his mouth, teasing him, calling his own tongue to play.
As the kiss broke away, Ezra whispered against Matt’s ear, ‘You belong to me.’
