CHAPTER TEN

Roth withdrew from Adam, half-collapsing on him. “Sorry. Gimme a chance to catch my breath and I’ll move.”

Adam continued to hold him. His hand smoothed over Roth’s drawn back hair, and he turned his head to press his lips to Roth’s jaw. “It’s okay. Stay.”

Stay.

Roth’s entire being reacted to the word. If the orgasm had transcended earthly pleasure, that single word caused angels to sing. And, he didn’t even really believe in them. He managed to lift himself enough to gaze down at his lover. The softness in his expression gave Roth a thrill of hope. “Shower with me.”

“Okay.”

They retrieved Adam’s duffel, removed the soiled duvet from the bed. Remade it, then hit the shower. Roth devoted himself to the moment, washing his lover, kissing him, playing with him as they both became aroused again. He knelt behind Adam, laving the tattoo of the fish with his adoring tongue before nipping and kneading his lover’s muscular ass.

With complete adoration, Roth paid homage to his lover. They had more patience as they rinsed and dried each other. Roth made it his mission to explore every inch of his partner.

Following a second indulgence of their mutual passion, Roth held Adam in his arms. “How did the FBI recruit you?”

“Bradley had a close friend who knew about me.” Adam rubbed his cheek against Roth’s chest. “He knew I had become a marksman. They wanted me as a sniper.”

His family’s wealth and high profile made him unhappily familiar with this sort of thing. “Feds don’t use snipers for many missions that see daylight.”

Adam exhaled heavily. “No.”

Wishing to help the man open up, he volunteered information himself. “The reason I kind of vanished happened because of my brother’s kidnapping.”

Adam sat up, his liquid silk black hair sliding over his wide shoulder. “He okay?”

Roth reached up to smooth back the glossy tresses and stroke his fingertips over Adam’s face. “He is now.”

“What went down?”

“Our family business landed us in a mafia-related issue. Ridge, my younger brother got shot and snatched.” Roth’s heart fluttered some, thinking about the close call. “His fiancé, a wonderful man, caught my brother’s silent signals and spear-headed the effort to rescue him. We have Jason to thank for Ridge’s life.”

Adam’s gaze moved over his face. “You love him.”

Roth replied with heartfelt earnestness. “Yes, I do.”

Adam’s musical voice changed, becoming flat. “I acted like an asshole. Again.”

Rolling to place the other man half-under him, Roth braced his upper body’s weight on one bent elbow. “You couldn’t have known. Forget it, okay?” Wishing to continue the exchange, he queried, “Tell me about your time with the Bureau.”

Silky-looking black brows hiking, Adam returned, “You use that term too easily for a civilian.”

“Our family’s high profile has caused us all to learn things we’d rather have remained ignorant of, Adam.” He leaned down to place a soft kiss upon his lover’s glorious mouth. Lifting his head enough to meet the other man’s eyes, he encouraged, “Talk to me.”

Adam pushed him off gently. Roth allowed it, following the other man to stand beside the bed.

“I don’t think I can do this,” Adam whispered.

Naked and determined, Roth challenged, “Don’t be a chicken shit.”

Only the sounds of the house mingled with their breathing. Adam spoke, his tone tormented. “I killed so many times I killed my own humanity.”

Roth knew this might make or break their chances together. “I saw you the night you knelt and wept for that old woman. You didn’t kill your humanity. You just numbed your ability to deal with your past or live in the present.”

Adam turned to face him. Before that moment, Roth had seen the cold, but never the assassin Adam referred to. In the next heartbeat, Adam attacked. Roth’s family honored a long tradition of teaching all children martial arts from a very young age. He deflected the assault, using his superior bulk, and restrained his lover upon the carpeted floor.

“I’m not your enemy,” Roth snarled down at the other man.

Adam surged upward, powerful and still compelled by motivations Roth could only guess about. “Get off me!”

Invested emotionally and provoked, he obliged, rolling clear and to his feet. Adam kemped upright in a blink, a stunning feat of speed in a man that size. He grabbed Roth in a classical restraint. Meeting the eyes of the man he had shared such passion with, he said, “You give me whatever you think I deserve.”

Adam seemed to vibrate all over. He released his hold and settled into a loose attack stance, but did nothing. “Stop it.”

“Stop what?” Roth waited, baiting his lover. “Stop letting you hide? I’m going to tear down every defense you have, Adam.”

The aggression evaporated. His hands settled at his sides. “You’re a relentless bastard.”

Roth stepped closer, reaching to take the man’s hand. “It’s a family flaw.”

Adam flinched. “You should stay away from any where you might run into me. Just kick me to the curb tonight.”

Arms hungry for the feel of holding the man, Roth drew Adam into his embrace. “You agreed to stay the night.”

Despite the blowup, Adam stayed and Roth almost purred at the pleasure of laying draped on his big body. He slept better than he had since the final time he shared a bed with Katherine.

In the early morning hours, Adam rose and walked to the bathroom. Roth dozed. When his lover emerged, but walked almost silently toward the bedroom door, Roth lifted his head. “You even attempt to fucking cheat me of sleeping with you the rest of the night, I will stomp your fine ass.”

Adam returned to bed. “You are a relentless bastard.”

Roth rubbed his face in the man’s neck and exhaled.
