Chapter 10 - Bargaining
Chapter 10 – Bargaining
Marni awoke from her sleep feeling sluggish and entirely different than how it felt to awake from the valium. Her brain took a little while to start working again, just like it took her about 10 minutes to get her limbs functioning again. As feeling finally returned, she realized that she was cold, wet, covered in mud, and had been drooling on her pillow. She wiped her mouth with a dirty sleeve, sat up slowly, and gazed at herself in the mirror across the room. This time she could be sure that Luke didn’t touch her, this is how she must have been when he brought her up here.
Her first order of business was to take a bath. The cameras couldn’t be helped, and from what little she saw of them on the monitor outside, she thought she’d have a hard time finding them, anyway. She undressed in the tub, with the shower curtain around her, and started running the bath water while she was still in it. The first cold and then steamy hot water ran brown as the mud washed off of her; Marni reconsidered her bath.
The shower that she had instead was wonderful, and she luxuriated in the feel of the hot water against her skin. It was the truth that she missed being at home, missed having her things and most of all seeing and being with her daughter every day, but she found herself unwittingly appreciating the little things that Luke had done to make her stay here as comfortable as possible. Marni shuddered to think how much he must have watched her to know that she liked one soap fragrance over another, but it was the little things that made a happy life and she knew that it would have been even more overwhelming if she were forced to wear an unfamiliar scent, or clothing she didn’t like or that fit her, or—an even more frightening thought—forced to not wear clothing at all.
She chided herself for having such thoughts. This was a prison, and Luke had her daughter somewhere. Marni prayed that she was alright. She didn’t remember anything after going down, and she recalled that Hannah had kept running. Although she hoped that she had gotten away, it was much more likely that Luke had taken her down just as he had taken Marni.
The water felt good against her skin and she found herself standing in it until it at last started to cool. Marni reached a hand out to grab the towel she had placed nearby and toweled off in the shelter the shower curtains made for her. When she finally stepped out of the shower her hair was damp and curling against her back and her towel was firmly wrapped around her.
She went through the drawers and closets to find some acceptable outfit to fit her mood. She finally selected a pair of soft khaki pants and a close fitting turtleneck sweater. The lacy undergarments she was wearing were the same as the others she could choose from except for their color. A sports bra or other white cotton creation would have been much better, but she did not relish the idea of being in her rooms without wearing a bra or underwear.
Marni decided to go barefoot and after she had finished blow drying her hair and arranging the rest of her appearance, she quickly found herself getting bored. And hungry. She wondered if it would be like giving in to Luke if she demanded food from him. She desperately did not want to concede to him.
Out of boredom, and a wish to keep her mind off of her hunger, she began to clean and tidy her quarters. She found some fresh towels and sheets in a small cabinet in her bathroom. She stripped the bed and made it up again, then changed the toweling in the bathroom. There was no broom and nothing to wipe down surfaces with, so instead she went to her closet. She had meant to inspect the clothing that had been left here for a while now, but hadn’t been in the mood. Now was as good a time as any.
Upon further inspection she decided that she approved of most of the items hanging there, except for 2 or 3 articles that promptly went into the same pile as the dirty linens. Marni then went to the dresser drawers to see what was available there. Socks, underwear and bras filled one of the drawers, while blankets and more bedding filled the rest of the half. The other half of the dresser, she was surprised to find, was filled with items that would most likely fit Luke. Marni already knew that the other closet in her rooms was filled with his clothing, so in a perverse way it would make sense that these items were here as well.
She checked all the rest of the drawers and cabinets in her bedroom and bathroom and finally decided that there was nothing of major interest. There was a desk in her room that was filled with her favorite kind of word puzzle and a few books that she had started to read. Her stomach growled just then, and so she wasn’t too unhappy when she heard the knock on her door a few minutes later.
“I hope you brought me something to eat,” she said, knowing that he could hear her.
“I have. Go sit on the bed and get comfortable. I will bring it to you.”
There was a pause and Marni grimaced before she complied, stalking the few paces to her bed and throwing herself on it. She kicked her shoes off and lounged, folding her arms across her chest. “Is this comfortable enough for you?” she finally asked him through gritted teeth.
The door opening was her answer, and Luke entered the room carrying his meal. The tray was laden with items and it looked as though he had had a hard time fitting everything on to the tray. There was a full “home cooked” meal in front of her, slices of beef and long green beans and mashed potatoes laden with gravy. There was a dinner roll, and a bowl holding some sort of soup. A delicate tea cup held either tea or coffee, and a pitcher of water that was cold enough to have condensation form on it. Her stomach growled and her mouth started salivating as she breathed in the aromas as he moved closer.
“Do you mind if I eat with you?” he asked her. “I brought enough for two but I don’t want to impose.” He paused, waiting for her response. When it didn’t come he lowered his eyes to his shoes and placed the tray on the edge of the bed. “Forget I asked—.”
“Wait!” Marni said as he turned toward the door. “Look, I know I haven’t been the most gracious house guest. I’m sure you can imagine why.” She paused for dramatic effect and then continued. “If it means that all of this goes smoother, I will agree to be cordial to you,” Marni stopped speaking as a grin broke out on Luke’s face. “But only cordial, and only if both myself and my daughter go unmolested from now on.” Luke began frowning and she spoke again, “I think it’s only fair. I want a truce. No more escape attempts, moderate freedom, and respect for privacy.”
“I hardly think you’re in a position to bargain,” Luke retorted. “Obviously cooperation is preferable to open hostility. This is my final offer: if there are no more escape attempts, and if I feel you are making an effort to be cooperative, I will agree to allow you some time outside (under supervision) and I will agree to leave the two of you unharmed as much as can be possible in a situation like this. Mark me, though, I do not make this offer lightly. I’ll warn you only once that behavior must change and then I will take what is mine. Forcefully, if necessary.” Luke’s eyes gave her all of the indication she needed as to what he was referring to. His eyes raked her body suggestively and she flinched back into the pillows to provide as much shield as was possible. Marni felt dirty all over and scared out of her wits and she had a strange feeling she had just made a deal with the devil.
“Is there any other fine print I should be aware of before I agree to this?” she said, mockingly.
“Only that you should know that I love you, more than you can imagine, and that I will do anything to make you mine. That makes me incredibly dangerous to cross. Keep that in mind as you mull over your options. One way or another, I will have you.” Luke made a small bow and turned from her, slamming the door behind him and sending the bolt home with a click. Marni found she no longer had an appetite.
