Chapter 10

10.

Epilogue

Nico could always throw down in the kitchen. He was giving people down here a real taste of the City would have to offer. Some of the people in this town couldn’t find Puerto Rico or the Dominican Republic on the map if there was a gun cocked and loaded at their heads. That didn’t stop Nico’s little café from being one of the hottest places in town. He was satisfied doing what he liked.

There was enough money to buy a house and try to figure out whatever the hell we were interested in. Nico got his café. I did my paintings. Hey, I could even take some classes at the Community College to get the ball rolling. Not that I really needed to get a degree at this point. My stuff was being shipped all over the world. People said my paintings were graphic, real, and gritty. ‘Like you’d taken Picasso to the hood and pimped him out--opened his eyes to pain and the fleeting possibility of what tomorrow actually meant’. Their words not mine. If I had to describe the period I was in now, then it was allabout reflection. Pictures dedicated to what I saw as I laid in wait to either live or die.

Lil’ Man and Princess had plenty of room to run around in the front yard. We didn’t actually have the white picket fence, but we had the perfect little house. It was perfect for the four, soon to be five, of us. Our little Irish, Puerto Rican, and Dominican brood…

My mother once told me about the place my father’s parents came from; a little town a couple states away. It was quiet, but friendly. Small, yet comfortable. The one place in the entire world my dad liked to visit. She said I had conceived there in a place between the start of the mountains and the spread of the forests. Our house was in a very similar spot.

I rested my hand on Nico’s big belly. It was only one this time. We’d have enough with for a while with the twins having already started school. They loved running around the backyard, especially on nights like this. We didn’t have fireflies in the City, or maybe just in our part of the City.

This was all new to me and Nico, but we’ve made the best of it. He leaned back against me and our hands clasped over the top of his belly. This was our life.

It had only taken one day to be the reset.

I looked to the stars knowing this was just the beginning.

The End
