Hold On To My Heart ~ Five Years Later

Twenty seven year old Rachel Duckett had gotten married to a man named Craig Lawless a year after the dispute between James, Roger and herself. Three months into their marriage, Rachel found out she was pregnant. Nine months later, she gave birth to a daughter named Mahalia. A year later, Rachel and Craig got divorced.

Sixty four year old James and sixty three year old Roger were still working as studio musicians. They no longer worked together. But there had not been a day that went by that the three didn't think about each other.

Nineteen year old Renee had gotten married to Carter two years after the dispute between her sister, James and Roger. She had given up the idea of running or making moonshine. She often found Rachel crying. Renee figured it was a combination of the divorce and her missing her two best friends.

Mahalia held onto her mother's hand as they entered the grocery store together. Mahila was almost a spitting image of Rachel. She had the same thick brown hair, big green eyes and smile.

"Mommy, how old is Aunt ReRe going to be?" The four year old asked.

"Twenty." Rachel said with a smile.

"That's old, Mommy." Mahila giggled. Rachel just laughed.

As they stopped at the drink section, Rachel could feel someone watching her. She looked to her right. It was Roger. They smiled uneasily at each other.

"How are you, Roger?" Rachel asked.

"Good. How about yourself?" Roger responded.

"Okay. You look really good, Roger." She said.

"Thanks. You do, too." Roger said.

"Thank you." Rachel said.

"This must be your daughter." Roger looked down at Mahila with a smile.

"Yes. This is Mahlia, my pride and joy." Rachel said with a smile. "Mahlia, this is Roger." Rachel told Mahlia.

"Hi! You have really pretty hair, Roger." Mahila said with a wide smile.

"Thank you. You have pretty hair, too, just like your mom." Roger laughed. Rachel felt herself blush slightly.

"Have you talked to James?" Rachel asked. Rachel noticed that Roger looked past her shoulder.

"No, we've not spoken since we left your house. But speak of the devil, though." Roger nodded behind Rachel. Rachel turned and looked to see James walking towards them.

"Hello, Rachel, Roger." James said, stopping where they stood.

"Hello." They said. They commented on well the others looked.

"Mommy? Who's he?" Mahila piped up.

"This is another old friend of mine. His name's James. James, this is my daughter, Mahlia." Rachel said.

"She's a spitting image of you, Rachel." James said.

"Thanks." Rachel said with a soft smile. "I'm throwing a surprise party for Renee today at 4. You two are welcome to come if you want." Rachel said.

"Thanks. We'll keep that in mind." Roger and James told her.

At a little past four, Rachel and Renee's dad, Mahalia, and some aunts and uncles were there along with Carter, his parents and older sister. A blue car and a red one pulled into the driveway. Renee looked closely at the drivers. She turned and looked at Rachel. Rachel blushed and smiled as she shrugged.

"What are James and Roger doing here? I thought that you three weren't on speaking terms?" Renee asked softly.

"I ran into both of them at the store and asked them to come. I thought that they wouldn't come." Rachel said.

"Well, at least you three are on speaking terms." Renee said. Roger and James got of their cars and made their way over to Rachel.

"I'm glad you two could make it." Rachel said with a soft smile. The pair returned her smile.

"Come to the barn with me for a minute." Rachel said to the two. They followed her up to the barn.

"This brings back some memories." James looked around with a smile.

"Yeah. Tell me about it." Roger laughed. Rachel just smiled.

"Guys, I want to say I'm sorry for all that happened five years ago." Rachel sniffed and wiped her eyes.

"I'm sorry, too. I've acted like such a wanker for just upping and leaving and not even bothering to call either one of you." Roger said.

"Me, too. I've probably been the biggest wanker of all." James said. Rachel wiped her eyes. The three embraced each other.

``I've missed you two ruddy pumpkin heads so much!" Rachel said.

"I've missed you guys, too." James said.

"Me, too. Now, I know I can rest at night." Roger said.

"I think we all can." Rachel chuckled softly. The trio held hands and exited the barn to join the party. They all slept better knowing that everything had been apologized for and brought out into the open.
