Rejected

The day had finally come the ship had arrived. Cindy had managed to avoid Jen, it seemed the girl worked almost 24 hours in the RX offices and if she paused just outside the door she could listen for someone inside. It wasn’t a guarantee it would be Jen but by leaving she avoided the chance. Now she was forced to stand with her as the 4 of them stood in the cramped hallway that led to the airlock to the landing pad. The air seemed to be frosted around her, a cold shiver running down Cindy’s spine. She was not alone even the monster Striker and the cyborg Riku were shivering in the presence of Jen.

One by one they entered the airlock and vanished form sight as the machine equaled pressure and rose to the landing pad level. Once the 4 were out on the bridge, space silent around them, and their evo-charms protecting them from the vacuumed. The ship looped over the edge of the platform, the massive battle curried still in hover, its size at least a quarter of that of the station was far to massive to land. The Quartet approached the woman in the blue uniform of a Zero Agent and was lead to the ship. Again they went through equalization in the ship’s airlock and stepped into the main corridor of the ship. And finally they could speak.

“I have reviewed your information. And I’m afraid I have good and bad news.” The Zero began, turning first to Striker. “Your records don’t have much to be desired, we don’t really need a zero g waitress on the cruiser. But you’re obviously dedicated to go though such extensive bio mods. We can certainly use another weapon in our war. Unfortunately we can’t put up the child. As impressive as her intellect may be and her willingness to jack in any knowledge we could want we just cant take a child onto a warship.”

Cindy’s heart sank; she just got rejected on getting off this piss hole. “But, But, I spends thousands of points on new skills. Engineering, ballistics, piloting, Zero G acrobatics, surely one of those skill could use me. Did you get the report on how my mind assimilates upgrades as if I was naturally trained?”

The Zero nodded “Yes, yes, I see all that.”

Cindy wrapped her arms around Strikers leg, holding it in a vice like grip, as if somehow she could avoid the inevitable by fusing to Striker at the calf. Even as useless as she knew it was, even as the tears poured out she tried in vein.

“Hey, hey kid, come back in a few years, your just to young to come but there’s a spot waiting when your 16.”

“No!” Cindy shouted stomping her foot “No I can’t go back there, Please! Please!”

“Come on kid, It’s not so bad and you’re a smart kid, you’ll be fine.”

Even as she was peeled off of Striker by Riku and placed in the airlock she just dropped to her knees and sobbed. She closed her eyes trying to block out the world, protected by the evo-charm from the vacuum she could not even feel the sudden cold around her nor care as someone lifted her up and carried her.

Her silent sobs were soon audible in her ears and she felt the cold, the oppressive cold and she opened her eyes, she stared up into those large pale jewels as Jen held her close to her chest.

“Oh Josh…I’m so sorry.”

“You knew this was coming, didn’t you?”

“….Come on Josh, let’s go home. We have to get back to work.”

Cindy shivered “W…Work…how can I work after that.”

“Tom is waiting on your Josh.”
