A/N: OMG I updated! lol... I had some issues with this. Please dont kill me.

Ch.10 “Homeless”

Amber took a deep breath and sat on the edge of Tanner’s desk. What the hell am I doing? She asked herself, looking around his office. Quickly she fixed her hair and smoothed her shirt.

He was holding back so much, Amber could tell. He was so wrapped around the fact that she was still seventeen. He had a point but Amber felt something for him. She knew there was something between them but Tanner just was too stubborn to admit it. No one had ever kissed her or touched her like he did, with emotion and blatant sexuality. Yes Lucas was a great lover and he knew how to touch a woman but… Tanner. There was something about him and the way he touched her.

The door opened slowly and Amber’s breath caught I her throat as Tanner stepped in, his tall frame moving slowly towards her. She heard the soft click of the lock and bit her bottom lip. His hair was in his eyes again -god he looks so tempting, Amber thought.

Tanner stood in front of Amber, hands in his pockets, and shifted slightly, obviously second-guessing himself. He sighed heavily and hung his head, roughing up the back of his hair. Amber grinned and reached out for him, directing him to his chair to sit him down.

“I’m not as bad as you think” she whispered, sitting on his lap, facing him. Tanner groaned and nodded. She wrapped her arms around his middle and rested her head on his shoulder, sighing gently.

“Its not you I’m worried about” Tanner replied, placing his hands on the small of her back, holding her close. “The age thing might not be a deal to you but it is to me”

“I know”

Tanner slid his hands up Ambers back and held onto her shoulders, pulling her so he could see her face clearly, “Then what are we doing?”

Amber drew her brows together and looked around his office, before kissing his cheek gently, “I just wanted you to myself for a little bit” she confessed in a whisper, her breath tickling his ear. “I didn’t say that I wanted sex”

She sighed gently, amused by the look received from the blond haired man. “Listen… I know that you think I’m just some spoiled brat who got caught with drugs and is now paying the price and bitching the whole way. I know that you probably know more about me than I know about you. But what I don’t know is what I’m feeling”

Tanner kept silent, tracing small circles on her lower back as she continued, listening intently “I’m not use to feeling like this. I don’t know how to react to it so I guess I come across kind of strong.”

“How do you feel then?”

Amber sighed at his question and bit her bottom lip, “Like I want to hold on tight and never let go” she said quietly. Her voice was small and dripping of insecurities.

When Tanner didn’t respond right away, Amber got off his lap and blushed heavily, making her way towards the door. “I was homeless” Tanner said suddenly. His eyes widened and he ran his fingers through his hair, thinking and silently cursing himself as it slipped out.

Amber stopped and turned towards him, “What?” now she was confused.

Tanner got up and took her hand, leading her towards his desk chair where he motioned her to sit down. He then sat on his desk in front of her, obviously thinking something over and replaying things in his mind.

“When I was twelve, my parents were killed in a car accident.” He said after a while, trying to find the right words to say. Amber kept her mouth shut and listened. “I heard horror stories about kids being put into the system and dealing with awful foster families, getting abused and whatever. I don’t have any other family so I ran. I was on the street for a little over three years -I’ve done a lot of things that I’m ashamed of and that I want to forget. I don’t know how the police never found me… honestly I think they gave up or something.”

Amber drew her brows together but held onto Tanner’s hand, soaking in all this new information. “When I was fifteen, Eleanor caught me stealing a crate of apples from her store -needless to say I had dropped the crate because it was too heavy and ruined most of the apples. She told me that if I didn’t want her going to the police about it, I would work for her until I had earned enough money to pay her back. I really didn’t want to work for her but-”

“But you didn’t want to get put into the system either.”

“Yeah. So I agreed and started helping her around the store. She paid me twenty cents an hour -to teach me a lesson I suppose- and by the time I had paid off the crate of ruined apples, I didn’t want to leave. She fed me at least twice a day, talked to me and treated me decently. And her son and I had become very close friends -even though he was a bit older. Cedrik.”

Amber’s eyes widened and she faintly smiled. “She offered a place to stay -in her home?”

Tanner nodded “She made me finish school, get a job and help her around the store. It was the best thing that ever happened to me. When I was nineteen, I found out that my parents left me money… so I bought this building and my apartment and opened a shelter” He sighed softly, catching his bottom lip between his teeth.

“Did you think that I would think less of you because of your past?” Amber asked.

“You had the right to know. I wasn’t sure how you were -or are- going to react”

Amber held Tanner’s face with her hands and kissed his lips gently, “I’m not going to lie…if you would have told me that the first day I came here…it would have bothered me. But now, knowing these people, the kids…you.” Amber sighed, shaking her head slightly, “The only thing that bothers me is that you had to live like that and go through that. I’m so sorry, Tanner. I know saying that doesn’t help and that you want to forget but…it made you a stronger person. A better person.”

Tanner wrapped his arms around her, pressing his lips to her shoulder softly and sighed heavily.
